Before you go live, assign a trusted moderator if possible, turn on YouTube’s hold-for-review filter, and configure blocked words and participation limits that fit your community. Super Chats and Super Stickers are still live-chat messages, so YouTube says they can be moderated like other messages. But filters are imperfect, and a held message stays hidden until someone reviews it. Decide in advance what will happen to paid messages that nobody can respond to.
Set expectations before the livestream
A Super Chat is a paid message in live chat, not a promise that the creator will read or answer it. If you will not be watching chat, tell viewers how you plan to handle messages: for example, whether you will review them after the stream, acknowledge them in a later post, or leave them unanswered. YouTube’s help guidance describes moderation controls; it does not require creators to respond to each purchase.

Also give your moderator a short, clear policy before the stream. Cover abusive content, personal information, scams, and ambiguous messages, and explain when to escalate a decision to you. YouTube recommends assigning moderators but does not prescribe a particular escalation script.

Hold potentially inappropriate messages for review
Enable YouTube’s option to hold potentially inappropriate live-chat messages. A creator or moderator can choose to show or hide held messages. If nobody acts, the message remains hidden; the filter is not a guarantee that every harmful message will be caught. YouTube’s guidance cautions that “No system is perfect.” Read YouTube’s live-chat moderation guidance.

Add blocked words thoughtfully
Set blocked words and phrases in YouTube Studio’s moderation settings. YouTube says messages containing, or closely matching, configured terms can be stopped. Include terms that are relevant to your channel, but avoid broad or ambiguous words that could suppress legitimate messages—including a paid message that deserves review. Check the settings before each stream if your policy or community changes. See YouTube’s channel moderation settings.
Use slow mode when message volume is a problem
Slow mode limits how often viewers can post, which can make a busy chat easier for a moderator to review. YouTube notes that the channel owner, moderators, and channel members are not subject to the same wait as other viewers. Slow mode reduces posting frequency; it does not decide whether a message is appropriate.

Restrict who can participate only when it fits
You can consider subscriber-only or member-only chat where appropriate. Explain the restriction to viewers and weigh the added participation barrier against the moderation benefit. These controls can reduce access for new viewers, but they do not remove the need to handle edge cases or decide what to do with paid messages.

YouTube has standard and managing moderators. Both can take action on chat users, but managing moderators receive additional controls. They do not have access to Live Control Room or YouTube Studio, so do not assign the role expecting them to operate those areas. YouTube’s moderator guidance lists timeouts ranging from 10 seconds to 24 hours. Give your moderator permission to act according to your policy, but avoid asking them to make promises about payments, refunds, or private matters.
When a Super Chat needs moderation
- Assess the message against your stated policy. A paid message is still subject to your chat rules; payment does not require you to leave abusive, unsafe, or policy-violating content visible.
- Use the action appropriate to the situation. A moderator can remove an inappropriate message, put the user in timeout, or hide the user from the channel. YouTube says a removed message is permanently removed from live chat.
- Escalate uncertainty without exposing private information. If the message is ambiguous, follow the channel’s policy and refer the question to the creator after the stream rather than improvising a public commitment.
YouTube says that if a Super Chat or Super Sticker is moderated and removed for violating its policies, YouTube donates its portion of the revenue to charity. That statement does not say the viewer automatically receives a refund. Separately, YouTube says deleting a Super Chat after the stream does not result in a refund. Understand the revenue statement before discussing a removed message
YouTube states that creators receive 70% of Supers revenue confirmed by Google after local sales tax and iOS App Store fees are deducted. The same YouTube Help page says YouTube currently covers transaction costs, including credit-card fees. This is YouTube’s platform statement, not an independently audited statistic, and revenue terms can change. The 70% figure does not mean every amount a viewer pays is the basis for the calculation.
