Enable interception before navigation, then resolve every intercepted request exactly once with continue(), respond(), or abort(). If other listeners or packages may handle requests too, check isInterceptResolutionHandled() immediately before resolving; after any asynchronous work, check it again. These steps prevent the most common interception failure: a request that stalls or is resolved twice.
Enable interception before the requests you want to handle
Call and await page.setRequestInterception(true) before navigating or triggering the requests you need to inspect. Once interception is enabled, each request stalls until it is continued, fulfilled with a response, or aborted, unless the browser cache completes it.
This minimal example blocks PNG requests and lets other requests proceed:
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setRequestInterception(true);
page.on('request', request => {
if (request.isInterceptResolutionHandled()) return;
if (request.url().endsWith('.png')) {
request.abort();
} else {
request.continue();
}
});
await page.goto('https://example.com');
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
The handled-state guard is useful even in a small script: another listener or package can be attached to the same page and compete to resolve a request. The handler registers before navigation so it can see the page’s initial requests.

Choose how each request should be resolved
Every intercepted request needs one of three outcomes. Choose based on whether the request should proceed, be replaced, or be stopped.
| Method | Use it when | Behavior |
|---|---|---|
request.continue(overrides?, priority?) |
The browser should make the request, optionally with changed request properties. | Continues the request. The overrides argument is optional; a numeric priority opts into cooperative handling. |
request.respond(response, priority?) |
You want to supply a mock response instead of letting the request proceed normally. | Fulfills the request with the supplied response. A numeric priority opts into cooperative handling. Mocking a data URL this way is unsupported; the call is a no-op. |
request.abort(errorCode?) |
The request should be blocked. | Aborts the request. A numeric priority opts into cooperative handling. |
For example, continuing with overrides is the right pattern when you need to change request details while still allowing it to reach its destination. Use respond() for a deliberate mock, not as a way to alter a data URL.

Handle asynchronous work without racing other listeners
A request can be resolved by another listener while your handler is waiting on asynchronous work. Check the handled state both before the work and again immediately before resolving. Keep the final check and the resolution call together without an intervening await.
page.on('request', async request => {
if (request.isInterceptResolutionHandled()) return;
const shouldBlock = await checkRequest(request.url());
// Another listener may have resolved it during the await.
if (request.isInterceptResolutionHandled()) return;
if (shouldBlock) {
request.abort();
} else {
request.continue();
}
});
The example assumes checkRequest() is an asynchronous function in your application. If it rejects, handle that error in your application so the event handler does not silently leave the request unresolved. The essential race-prevention rule is the second guard: the state observed before the await may no longer be current afterward.

Use cooperative priorities when handlers should participate together
By default, a resolution without a priority is immediate legacy handling. For cooperative handling, every listener that resolves the request must supply a numeric priority. Puppeteer can then consider the competing resolutions and apply the highest-priority one. If priorities tie, abort wins over respond, and respond wins over continue.
Keep a default continuation cooperative
If your handler simply wants requests to continue unless another cooperative handler has a stronger opinion, use priority 0 or DEFAULT_INTERCEPT_RESOLUTION_PRIORITY. For example:

request.continue({}, 0);
Use a custom priority only when you intentionally want your handler’s decision to override another handler’s decision. Cooperative handling applies only if all resolutions include numeric priorities; one priority-free resolution switches that resolution to immediate legacy handling.
Guard before submitting a cooperative resolution
The handled-state check still matters when priorities are in use. A listener should not act on a request that has already been resolved. If the listener does asynchronous work first, perform the check again immediately before calling continue(), respond(), or abort().

Troubleshoot stalled requests and interception errors
- A request never finishes: Check that interception was enabled before the request and that every request reaching your handler receives a resolution. A request that is neither continued, responded to, nor aborted can remain stalled.
- “Request is already handled” or a duplicate-resolution failure: Another listener or package may have resolved the request. Check
isInterceptResolutionHandled()before acting, and repeat the check after anyawait. - Your priority does not win: Cooperative resolution requires numeric priorities on every competing resolution. A handler that omits its priority resolves immediately in legacy mode; it is not simply another vote in the cooperative result.
- A mock for a data URL has no effect:
request.respond()does not support mocking data URLs and is a no-op for that case. Use a supported request target for response mocking. - Image blocking catches more or fewer requests than expected: The sample checks whether the URL ends with the literal suffix
.png. Query strings, different extensions, or other image formats will not necessarily match that condition; adapt the predicate to the URLs your page requests.
Or skip the browser setup
For a screenshot rather than custom request routing or mocking, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request capture API. It does not replace Puppeteer’s request interception controls. It is a separate option when the goal is to capture a page without setting up a browser.
cURL example:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does enabling request interception also make Puppeteer block requests automatically?
No. Each intercepted request must receive an explicit resolution; interception by itself is not a blocking rule.
Can I use Puppeteer interception to mock a data URL with `respond()`?
No. Puppeteer’s `request.respond()` call is a no-op for data URLs.
