Find the exact call in the stack trace, check what it was waiting for and which timeout setting applies, then change only that wait or its condition. Puppeteer’s current 25.x API references document a 30,000 ms default for common waits and a separate 30,000 ms default for browser startup.
Start by identifying what timed out
Puppeteer’s TimeoutError can come from operations such as page.waitForSelector() or puppeteer.launch(). Those failures have different causes and fixes. Read the rejected call in the stack trace rather than assuming every timeout is a navigation problem.
- Browser startup: the failure occurs at or near
puppeteer.launch(). Check browser installation, executable configuration, permissions and available runtime resources. - Navigation: the failing call is
page.goto(),waitForNavigation(),reload(),goBack()or another navigation method. Check the URL, whether navigation was actually expected and the selected lifecycle condition. - Selector or locator: the script is waiting to find or act on an element. Check the selector, frame and whether the element should exist in the current page state.
- Other explicit wait: identify the condition in
waitForFunction(), a request or response wait, or a network-idle wait. Confirm that condition can become true for this page.
Record the method, URL or selector, timeout value and relevant page state. Also distinguish a timeout from an HTTP error: inspect the navigation response status separately when needed. Puppeteer’s debugging documentation notes a headless-shell caveat involving navigation responses with valid HTTP status codes.
Understand which timeout setting applies
The Puppeteer 25.x API references specify 30,000 ms as the default for common wait options. A per-call timeout can override that default; 0 disables the timeout. The page-level settings have different scopes:

| Setting | Applies to | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
Per-operation timeout |
The individual wait or navigation call that accepts the option | One particular operation needs a different deadline. |
page.setDefaultTimeout(ms) |
General page waits | You intentionally want a broader policy for page-level waits. |
page.setDefaultNavigationTimeout(ms) |
goto, reload, setContent, waitForNavigation, goBack and goForward |
You want a policy for navigation operations without changing other page waits. |
puppeteer.launch({timeout}) |
Waiting for the browser process to start | Browser startup itself has a justified longer deadline. |
Timeouts are in milliseconds. Prefer a per-call setting for an exceptional operation; use a page default only when the wider scope is intended.
Match navigation waits to what the script needs
Navigation’s default waitUntil condition is load. Puppeteer also supports lifecycle conditions such as domcontentloaded, networkidle0 and networkidle2. Choose the least strict condition that makes the next step safe. If the script needs application content rather than a browser lifecycle event, wait for a meaningful selector or page-specific condition instead of assuming that network quiet means the app is ready.
For example, this waits for the document to be parsed, then separately waits for the element the script needs:

await page.goto('https://example.com', {
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
timeout: 45_000,
});
await page.waitForSelector('#ready', { timeout: 10_000 });
Use a navigation-specific default only if that policy should cover the navigation methods listed above:
page.setDefaultNavigationTimeout(45_000);
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
Check selectors, locators and network-idle waits
When a selector wait expires
Open the page visibly during diagnosis and inspect whether the expected element exists, whether it is inside an iframe and whether the application reached the expected state. A correct selector cannot be found in the wrong frame or before the relevant UI appears.
Puppeteer locators wait for element presence and action preconditions, inherit the page timeout by default and allow a per-locator timeout. They can make action waits more convenient, but they cannot fix a misspelled selector or a state that never occurs.

When waiting for network idle
page.waitForNetworkIdle() waits for the network to be idle; its current options reference lists a 500 ms default idle time. A page that intentionally keeps requests open may not satisfy the condition. Treat that as a reason to inspect the page’s network behavior, not as a universal explanation for timeouts.
Debug the page and browser behavior
Puppeteer’s debugging guide recommends inspecting behavior in a visible browser with headless: false and using slowMo to make interactions easier to follow. You can also capture page console messages and relevant request and response activity to see where progress stops. The cause may lie in client code, the network, a Web API or browser behavior.
Recommended Free Tools
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
headless: false,
slowMo: 100,
});
const page = await browser.newPage();
page.on('console', message => console.log('PAGE:', message.text()));
page.on('requestfailed', request => {
console.log('REQUEST FAILED:', request.url(), request.failure()?.errorText);
});
Use this as a diagnostic setup, not as a timeout fix. Once you identify the stalled step, adjust its condition, selector, environment or deadline.

Treat launch timeouts as a separate problem
The current Puppeteer launch options document a 30,000 ms default startup timeout. Before raising it, verify that Puppeteer has the expected browser installed and can access its configured cache and executable. The troubleshooting guide covers missing browser downloads, blocked install scripts, platform dependencies, sandbox and permission concerns, and deployment-specific setup.
Puppeteer says it is only guaranteed to work with its bundled browser; using an alternate executable is at the user’s risk. Avoid treating --no-sandbox as a routine fix: Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guidance strongly discourages running without a sandbox and recommends configuring one where possible.
One documented Cloud Run case is particularly specific: CPU can be disabled after an HTTP response is written, so launching Puppeteer in the background after responding can appear very slow. Depending on the service design, keep CPU available for that work or launch before responding. This explains that runtime scenario, not timeouts on every cloud platform.

Common Puppeteer timeout errors and fixes
| Symptom | Check first | Narrow response |
|---|---|---|
goto() times out |
URL, expected navigation and waitUntil condition |
Choose the lifecycle event the next step actually requires; if appropriate, use a page-specific readiness wait. |
waitForSelector() times out |
Selector spelling, frame context, visibility and application state | Correct the target or wait for a condition that can occur; increase only that call’s timeout if the expected element is genuinely slow. |
| Network-idle wait times out | Whether requests remain open or the page continues background activity | Use a more relevant readiness condition if network quiet is not required. |
launch() times out |
Browser download, executable path, permissions, dependencies and available resources | Resolve the installation or runtime issue first; adjust the launch timeout only if startup legitimately needs more time. |
| Timeout appears only in deployment | Differences in browser availability, permissions, sandboxing and CPU/resource behavior | Follow the deployment’s runtime requirements. For the documented Cloud Run background-launch case, ensure CPU remains available or launch before responding. |
Choose a timeout change without hiding the cause
Increase a deadline when the operation and its completion condition are correct but known work needs more time. Do not set every timeout to a large value as a first response: that makes broken selectors, stalled navigation and unavailable browsers take longer to diagnose.
Setting timeout: 0 disables that timeout. It can leave automation waiting indefinitely if its condition is impossible, so use it only when another reliable mechanism bounds or cancels the work.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a website rather than debug Puppeteer, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. For a simple WebP capture:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot"
-d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY
--data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com
-o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie and consent banners are accepted like a visitor and removed along with more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts and failed loads are not billed, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers report the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Frequently Asked Questions
What is Puppeteer’s default timeout?
The current 25.x API references specify 30,000 ms for common waits; launch has a separate documented 30,000 ms default.
What does Puppeteer’s timeout value of 0 do?
It disables the timeout for that operation, so a condition that never occurs may leave the script waiting indefinitely.
