How to Handle Multiplayer Disconnects and Progress Loss in The Outlast Trials

If you disconnect during an Escalation run, try to rejoin within five minutes. Red Barrels’ July 14, 2026 rules say Escalation progress is saved only when a Trial is completed successfully, and the host carries the save. If everyone leaves, disconnects, or fails before the Trial ends, the run fails and its save is voided. These rules are specific to Escalation; they do not establish how every other mode handles progress.

First, identify your mode and what happened

The published recovery rules below apply to Escalation, not automatically to ordinary Trials, Invasion, or other modes. To work out whether they fit your situation, check three details:

  • Mode: Were you in Escalation?
  • Run state: Had the group successfully completed the Trial before the disconnect?
  • Disconnect scope and timing: Did one player drop or everyone, and is the five-minute rejoin window still open?

These details determine which Escalation rule applies; they do not identify the technical cause of the connection problem.

What to do after an Escalation disconnect

  1. If one player unexpectedly disconnected, try to rejoin promptly. Red Barrels documents a five-minute window to rejoin the ongoing Escalation run. The host carries the save, so another player cannot independently continue that run as the save owner. See the Project Boneyard Season 7 patch notes.
  2. Check whether the Trial was completed successfully. Red Barrels states, “Progress is only saved upon successfully completing a Trial.” A disconnect during an unfinished Trial is not the same as losing progress that had already been saved between completed Trials.
  3. If everyone left, disconnected, or failed during the Trial, treat the run as failed. Under the July 2026 Escalation rules, that condition voids the run’s save; the notes do not describe a recovery method for that case.
  4. If the group is back in the lobby, have the group leader resume the saved run. Red Barrels says the group leader may resume a saved run from the lobby.

When the same rules do not answer the question

If the incident happened in ordinary Trials, Invasion, or another mode, the cited official material does not establish that the Escalation save, failure, or rejoin rules apply. Likewise, it does not provide a general, verified troubleshooting sequence for multiplayer disconnects across platforms. Avoid treating DNS changes, router or cable purchases, reinstalling, or local-file edits as confirmed fixes for this specific problem; the available official sources do not verify them.

Report recurring disconnects to Red Barrels

For repeated issues, Red Barrels points players to its official Outlast Trials support articles and ticketing path. Steam’s technical-issue page for The Outlast Trials also lists Red Barrels’ customer-support website and email.

When reporting the incident, include your platform, game mode, exact error message, approximate time, and whether one player or the whole group disconnected. This context can help support understand what happened; it is a practical suggestion, not a publisher-required checklist.
