A single VPS cannot absorb unlimited demand. The safest response to a sudden surge is to keep cacheable requests at the edge, shed expensive work with measured rate limits, and add capacity only after you know which resource is saturated. For recurring or sustained growth, put multiple origins behind a load balancer rather than relying on a larger machine forever.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
This guide gives you a preparation checklist, an incident procedure, ways to distinguish a flash crowd from a DDoS attack, and the trade-offs between CDN protection, vertical resizing, and horizontal scaling.

“The server is overloaded” is not a diagnosis. A traffic surge can exhaust CPU, memory, disk I/O, network throughput, database connections, worker slots, or an application queue. The first bottleneck often causes a cascade: requests wait longer, more workers remain occupied, queues grow, database connections are held open, and latency and error rates rise even though another resource still appears underused.
A VPS also has a hard ceiling. Resizing gives you a higher ceiling, but it does not remove the single-host failure domain. If every request reaches the origin, your application and database must process the full burst. Edge caching, request collapsing, and deliberate shedding of work reduce the number of requests that need origin capacity.

Prepare before the surge
Measure a normal operating baseline
Record a representative baseline during ordinary traffic and during known busy periods. Include:
- Requests per second and concurrent connections
- Latency percentiles, not just an average
- 4xx and 5xx error rates
- CPU utilization and load
- Memory use, swap activity, and out-of-memory events
- Disk I/O latency and throughput
- Network throughput and connection counts
- Database connections, query latency, and lock waits
- Queue depth and age of the oldest queued job
- Bandwidth consumption
Set alerts from the headroom you observe in your own load tests. A generic CPU percentage or requests-per-second number is not a safe limit for every application because request size, endpoint cost, cacheability, and database behavior differ.
Load-test the real request mix
Test the endpoints people actually use, including their request and response sizes, authentication behavior, cache status, and database work. Test bursts as well as a steady rate. Increase traffic until latency, error rate, queue depth, or another resource crosses the maximum you are willing to tolerate. Record the safe operating envelope and the point at which throttling must begin.
Repeat the test after changing code, database indexes, VPS size, web-server settings, or cache policy. A limit that was safe for a read-only page may be dangerous for a search, checkout, upload, report, or API endpoint.
Write an incident runbook
The runbook should identify who can change DNS or CDN settings, resize the VPS, enable a WAF rule, pause background jobs, and contact the provider. Include escalation contacts, credentials or break-glass access procedures, health-check URLs, rollback steps, and a static maintenance page that can be served without the application stack.

Keep a queue for slow or nonessential work, cap database connections, and decide which features can be disabled first. These measures provide an escape path when the application is still reachable but cannot safely accept every request.

CDN and reverse-proxy caching
Place a CDN or reverse proxy between visitors and the VPS. Static files should use long, versioned cache lifetimes so a new filename is created when content changes. Images, stylesheets, scripts, downloads, and other immutable assets can then be served without contacting the origin.
For non-personalized dynamic pages, short microcaching can absorb a burst. Where the application permits it, stale-while-revalidate allows the edge to serve a recent object while one request refreshes it in the background. Do not cache responses containing user-specific data, private account information, or state-changing operations unless the cache policy is explicitly designed for that behavior.
Request collapsing and cache hierarchy
When many visitors request the same uncached object at once, request collapsing lets one origin fetch satisfy the group instead of creating a separate origin request for every visitor. A hierarchy of edge caches, including an origin-shield layer where available, can further reduce duplicate fetches. AWS identifies cache hierarchies, request collapsing, and Origin Shield as ways to keep many requests away from the origin, and emphasizes that maximizing cache-hit ratio improves both performance and DDoS resilience.
Cache policy during an incident
During a surge, increase caching only where correctness allows it. Serve cached or stale content for read-heavy pages, shorten or disable refresh work, and remove cache-busting behavior that turns every visitor into a miss. Keep personalized and write operations on stricter controls; they need application-level protection rather than blanket caching.

Design rate limits around cost, not a single global number
Choose dimensions for each endpoint
Define limits by endpoint cost and client identity. A cheap static-looking request, an authenticated search, a report generator, and a file upload should not consume the same budget. Useful dimensions include:
- Per-IP limits for anonymous traffic, with care for shared networks and carrier-grade NAT
- Per-account or API-key limits for authenticated clients
- Per-route limits for expensive operations
- Concurrent-request limits for endpoints that hold workers or database connections
- Global limits that protect the whole origin from aggregate overload
Establish the values with load testing. AWS recommends rejecting traffic above the defined capacity with a throttling response rather than allowing workers and databases to fail unpredictably.
Return deliberate overload responses
Use HTTP 429 Too Many Requests when a client or route has exceeded its policy. Include retry guidance, such as a Retry-After value when you can calculate one. Use 503 Service Unavailable when the service is intentionally shedding load or in maintenance mode. Make clients and your own front end honor backoff instead of immediately retrying in a tight loop.
NGINX controls
NGINX implements request limiting with a leaky-bucket algorithm and supports per-IP or per-server connection limits. Apply request limits to the routes that consume the most CPU, database time, or worker slots, and add connection limits where long-lived requests can exhaust concurrency. The exact rate, burst allowance, and connection ceiling must come from your measurements; copying a value from another site is not a capacity plan.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

What to do when the spike starts
- Confirm user impact. Check synthetic availability probes, latency percentiles, 4xx and 5xx rates, and the symptoms users report. At the same time, inspect CPU, memory, disk I/O, network throughput, database connections, queue depth, and bandwidth. Health checks and alarms should cover both application and infrastructure metrics.
- Compare the request shape with your baseline. Look at URLs, methods, referrers, geographies, user-agent mix, source distribution, response sizes, and cache-hit ratio. A legitimate flash crowd often concentrates on a recognizable page or event. An abusive flood may use abnormal paths or methods, an unusual source mix, or a request pattern that does not resemble your users.
- Protect expensive paths first. Enable or tighten WAF rules and per-route limits. Reduce concurrency on database-heavy handlers, pause nonessential jobs, disable optional features, and route slow work into a queue. Serve cached or stale content wherever correctness permits.
- Make overload explicit. Return controlled 429 or 503 responses with retry guidance. This is safer than allowing random timeouts, worker exhaustion, and database failures that obscure the real bottleneck.
- Offload before adding horsepower. Improve cache hits, collapse duplicate requests, and shed work first. These steps can reduce origin demand immediately while a capacity change is being prepared.
- Resize for an immediate vertical step. Move to a larger VPS when one host is the short-term constraint. Watch the same metrics during and after the change; a faster CPU will not fix a saturated database, disk, network link, or application lock.
- Escalate to multiple origins for sustained demand. If the safe envelope remains below expected traffic, place additional application instances behind a load balancer and move toward autoscaling.
Flash crowd or DDoS attack?
Traffic volume alone does not prove malicious intent. A flash crowd is a legitimate surge caused by an event, link, campaign, or popular release. A DDoS attack attempts to consume application, network, or infrastructure resources, often with traffic that is distributed or shaped to bypass simple limits.

| Signal | More consistent with a flash crowd | More consistent with a DDoS |
|---|---|---|
| Request targets | Concentrated on a real article, product, event, or landing page | Abnormal paths, methods, or repeated requests with little user value |
| Referrers and user agents | Recognizable sources and a mix similar to normal visitors | Unusual, repetitive, missing, or rapidly changing patterns |
| Geography and sources | Matches the audience and promotion | Unexpected distribution or rapidly shifting source networks |
| Cache behavior | Cache hits rise when popular pages are cached | Requests are designed to miss cache or target expensive routes |
| Origin logs | Application activity resembles normal use at higher volume | Abnormal methods, paths, headers, or connection behavior |
Cloudflare lists slowness, outages, unexpected request or bandwidth graphs, and abnormal origin logs among common DDoS signs. Treat the classification as an operational decision, not a legal conclusion: apply protective controls while continuing to investigate.

Keep filtering at the edge
Use managed DDoS protection, custom WAF rules, edge rate limits, and caching before traffic reaches the VPS. Keep the origin private: allow inbound web traffic only from the CDN or proxy IP ranges, restrict administration to trusted networks, and remove direct public routes that let an attacker bypass the edge. Cloudflare recommends origin restriction and maximizing caching as part of this design.

When the provider reports mitigation or a blackhole
A provider may apply a mitigation limit or temporarily blackhole traffic to protect shared infrastructure. Contact support through the documented escalation path and provide precise evidence:
- Start and end timestamps with timezone
- Affected hostnames, services, and ports
- Source geographies and address ranges, when available
- Protocols, methods, and packet or request sizes
- Bandwidth, packet-rate, and connection graphs
- Representative origin-log entries and the user impact
- Which firewall, WAF, or caching changes were already applied
DigitalOcean advises preserving these details so support can improve firewall rules or the longer-term architecture. Its 2022 observation that 89% of observed attacks lasted less than one hour is historical provider data, not a universal forecast; keep protections active until telemetry shows that the event has ended.
Choosing between a CDN/WAF, a larger VPS, and multiple origins
| Approach | Time to activate | Traffic absorbed before origin | Best workload | Per-user or per-route control | State and database impact | Observability and mitigation | Geographic reach | Recurring cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CDN or WAF in front of the VPS | Often fastest if DNS and origin configuration are ready | High for cacheable HTTP and edge-filtered requests | Static assets, cacheable pages, and abusive HTTP patterns | Fine-grained edge rules and route limits | Origin state remains unchanged; uncached and write traffic still reaches it | Edge logs plus origin metrics; managed mitigation may be available | Broad, depending on the provider’s edge network | Varies by provider and traffic; verify current pricing |
| Larger single VPS | Fastest infrastructure change when resizing is supported | Higher host capacity, but every request still reaches one origin | Workloads limited by CPU, memory, disk, or network on one host | Application and web-server controls remain available | No new replication problem, but one host and its database remain a bottleneck | Simple to monitor; limited provider mitigation unless separately purchased | Usually dependent on one region | Higher instance cost; exact amounts depend on provider and plan |
| Multiple origins behind a load balancer | Slower to design and deploy | Scales sustained origin capacity across instances | Applications that can run safely on more than one server | Load balancer, WAF, and application limits can be combined | Requires a plan for sessions, files, caches, jobs, and database scaling or coordination | More telemetry and health checks; provider autoscaling may use CPU, RAM, network I/O, or custom metrics | Can span regions when the architecture supports it | Additional instances, load balancing, storage, and database costs; exact amounts vary |
The practical sequence is usually edge offload first, a vertical resize for immediate relief, and horizontal scaling when demand is sustained or a single host no longer provides an acceptable failure domain.
Best Value
Build a durable multi-origin design
Make application instances replaceable
Store sessions in shared or external storage, keep user uploads outside an individual server, and make deployments reproducible. Do not assume a request will return to the same instance. Health checks should remove an unhealthy origin automatically, while draining lets active requests finish during maintenance.

Adding web servers does not create unlimited database capacity. Set connection pools and queue consumers from measured database limits. Cache read-heavy data, prioritize critical writes, and place expensive reports or media processing behind a queue. Autoscaling signals can include CPU, RAM, network I/O, queue depth, and application-specific latency, but each signal needs a tested threshold and a scale-in policy that will not remove capacity during a continuing surge.
Preserve consistency and failure behavior
Define what happens when a replica is unavailable, a cache is cold, or a queued job is delayed. Prefer bounded retries with backoff, idempotent operations, and clear user-facing status over unlimited retries that multiply load.
Monitoring that leads to action
Dashboards are useful only when an alert tells someone what to do. Connect alerts to the runbook and include the trigger, owner, first mitigation, escalation time, and rollback condition. Separate user-impact alerts, such as availability and latency, from saturation alerts, such as CPU, memory, disk I/O, network, database connections, and queue depth. A green CPU graph does not disprove an outage if the database or network is failing.
Retain CDN, WAF, load-balancer, application, operating-system, and provider telemetry long enough to reconstruct the event. Preserve timestamps, request IDs, configuration changes, and sampled logs. This evidence lets you identify the true bottleneck, refine limits, and show a provider exactly what happened.

After the incident
- Build a timeline from edge, origin, database, and provider logs.
- Identify the first saturated resource and the first user-visible symptom.
- Compare actual traffic and request mix with the tested baseline.
- Record which cache, WAF, rate-limit, feature-flag, and scaling changes helped or harmed.
- Update the safe operating envelope and alert thresholds.
- Load-test the new controls, including recovery and rollback.
- Rehearse the runbook, provider escalation, static maintenance page, and origin-lockdown procedure.
A VPS can remain reliable during sharp peaks when the architecture deliberately limits origin work. The long-term goal is not to guess a universal requests-per-second number; it is to measure your application, keep cheap and cacheable traffic at the edge, reject excess work predictably, and add independent origins before one machine becomes the only thing standing between users and an outage.
