A pre-rendered page can become stale after a sale or restock, so decide deliberately whether to hide a sold-out item, keep its page visible, accept preorders or backorders, or collect restock interest. Then align product pages, variants, checkout and structured availability with that policy.
First, clarify what “static store” means
A catalog-only static site has no commerce backend to consult at purchase time. The workflow below applies when a static or headless storefront is connected to a commerce platform that manages products, inventory, carts and checkout. Shopify describes headless commerce as a separate front end and back end, with its Storefront API supporting product and collection display, cart and checkout operations: Shopify custom storefronts and Storefront API reference.

Page rendering can be static while commerce decisions remain dynamic. A label generated during a build is only a snapshot; the commerce backend should determine whether the selected item can actually be purchased. Shopify’s API reference discusses requests made during static-site builds, but it does not establish a universal regeneration interval. Use the refresh method your platform and framework support, such as a suitably fresh availability query, a short-lived cache or webhook-triggered regeneration, and verify its behavior against current documentation.

Choose an inventory source of truth
Use the commerce backend as the authority for sellable inventory and purchase eligibility. Shopify says inventory tracking keeps track of each product’s inventory level. WooCommerce likewise provides quantity management and stock thresholds. The displayed status should reflect the state checkout enforces—not a separately maintained number that can drift.

Decide what “available” means for your operation: physical on-hand quantity, sellable quantity after reservations, availability at a fulfillment location, or availability under a deliberate oversell or preorder policy. A pickup option or transfer between locations may change what a shopper can obtain even when the on-hand count at one location is zero.
Choose what happens when stock reaches zero
There is no universal best treatment for every sold-out product. Base the choice on whether the item is likely to return, whether its page remains useful, whether you can make a reliable fulfillment promise and whether shoppers should be able to register interest.

Shopify’s default behavior for tracked inventory at zero or below is to block purchases, but merchants can enable continued selling for cases such as incoming stock or a preorder. WooCommerce also provides stock, backorder and threshold settings. These are platform-specific controls, not one shared setting: check the behavior configured for your store.

Hiding is a catalog choice, not a substitute for deciding what a direct product page should do. Shopify documents filtering zero-stock items out of collections; WooCommerce has a catalog setting to hide out-of-stock products. If buyers benefit from product details or a restock signup, retaining the page may be more useful. If unavailable items clutter browsing and no restock path is needed, hiding them from listings may suit the catalog.

Do not assume that hiding or retaining a page produces a particular search-ranking outcome. Whatever you choose, decide what happens to direct links and make the page’s status and purchase options clear.
Can customers preorder or backorder an out-of-stock item?
Yes, if the commerce platform is configured to permit it and you can honor the fulfillment promise. Shopify allows merchants to continue selling tracked products when inventory reaches zero. WooCommerce has backorder controls and documents a preorder extension, including stock-decrement behavior. The precise controls and resulting checkout behavior differ by platform and configuration.

Before enabling continued sales, determine what the customer is agreeing to: a preorder for a future release, a backorder with an uncertain restock, or another arrangement. Show the expected timing or the fact that timing is not known, and make sure the cart and checkout do not imply immediate fulfillment when that is not available.
How do you handle variants and locations?
Check the selected variant
For products with sizes, colors or other options, availability belongs to the option the shopper selects. Do not infer that the whole product is unavailable just because a default size is out, or that every option is available because one has stock. In WooCommerce, hiding out-of-stock variations depends on catalog hiding being enabled, stock being managed at the variation level, the variation being at zero or out of stock, and backorders being disabled.

Check the relevant location and fulfillment option
For pickup or multi-location fulfillment, show availability for the location or option that matters to the buyer. Shopify’s location-specific StoreAvailability documentation describes cases where a variant can be available for pickup through transfer or oversell rules even when quantityAvailable is zero: StoreAvailability reference. This is why an on-hand quantity alone may not explain a pickup indicator; label the status according to what the shopper can actually do.
Keep the storefront, checkout and structured data consistent
Audit every place where a shopper or downstream system sees availability after stock changes:
- Collection and search-result cards
- Product pages and variant selectors
- Add-to-cart behavior, cart and checkout
- Feeds or other product exports
- Structured availability data
Shopify’s schema guide lists InStock, OutOfStock, PreOrder, BackOrder and Discontinued as availability values and cautions against a mismatch with inventory: Shopify structured data guidance. Treat schema as a representation of the actual offer, not a way to override what the page or checkout says. Search-engine eligibility requirements can change, so check the relevant search engine’s current documentation before making eligibility claims.

Shopify
Check inventory tracking, the setting that controls whether a tracked item may continue selling at zero, and collection behavior for out-of-stock products. Shopify documents collection filtering in Hiding out of stock products and continued selling in Selling out of stock products. For a custom storefront, use the Storefront API and confirm that the API version you implement is currently supported. The reference identified version 2026-10 as latest on October 4, 2026; version availability can change.
WooCommerce
Check stock management, stock thresholds, backorder behavior and the catalog option for hiding out-of-stock products in WooCommerce’s inventory settings documentation. For variable products, also check whether stock is managed for each variation and whether out-of-stock variations should be hidden. A practical rollout checklist
- Identify the architecture. Confirm whether the site is catalog-only or a static/headless front end connected to a commerce backend.
- Set the authority. Decide which backend inventory state controls the ability to buy, including any location, reservation or oversell rules.
- Choose a zero-stock policy. For each product type, specify whether it is hidden, shown as sold out, available for preorder/backorder or paired with a restock signup.
- Verify variants and locations. Test the exact option and fulfillment location shoppers will select.
- Set freshness behavior. Confirm how generated pages or cached availability update after sales and restocks; there is no universal refresh interval established here.
- Test the complete purchase path. After changing stock, inspect listing cards, product page, selector, cart, checkout, feeds and structured availability for a consistent result.
