Use Selenium WebDriver to exercise real user flows in the locales your application supports, then assert the page’s language and direction, translated content, Unicode input and output, and locale-sensitive values. WebDriver controls the browser; your product requirements define what “correct” means. A passing browser test covers the path you exercised, not every translation, database, or integration boundary.
What Selenium can—and cannot—tell you
Selenium describes WebDriver as a way to drive a browser natively. The W3C WebDriver specification describes a platform- and language-neutral remote-control protocol intended primarily for automated browser testing. Together, they provide the browser-control layer for internationalization checks; they do not supply the expected translations or decide whether the product is correctly localized. Selenium WebDriver documentation (modified November 7, 2024) quotes its summary as: “WebDriver drives a browser natively; learn more about it.” The W3C page is an Editor’s Draft dated July 9, 2026, not itself a W3C Recommendation.
Define expected behavior from the application’s supported locales and user journeys. Browser tests can verify observable page settings, content, interactions, and returned values. They cannot by themselves establish that every translation workflow, database column, outbound email, or downstream service handles all language data correctly.
Choose a useful locale and environment matrix
Start with the environments and journeys the product actually claims to support. Avoid an unbounded combination of every locale, browser, operating system, and route. Prioritize based on user impact, release risk, writing system, and known rendering or input differences.

| Coverage dimension | What to select | What to exercise |
|---|---|---|
| Locale and script | High-priority supported language tags and writing systems, including right-to-left locales where applicable. | Localized labels, messages, form validation, and text direction. |
| Browser and operating system | User-relevant combinations from the environments the product supports. | Rendering, keyboard input, and layout behavior that could vary by environment. |
| User journey | Representative routes and flows, not just a language-switch control. | Navigation, form submission, validation, and any server round-trip or persistence the journey exposes. |
Selenium documents scaling tests across browser and operating-system combinations, including with Grid. The sources do not establish a complete, current browser-specific locale-emulation matrix, so verify any locale configuration against the selected browser and Selenium language binding rather than assuming a universal setting. See the Selenium project documentation (modified September 16, 2026).
What to assert for each applicable flow
Language and direction
Check the rendered document’s language declaration and, for right-to-left content, its direction. Validate the actual page or relevant content region rather than assuming the locale switch alone proves correct markup. These settings are among the key internationalization checks reported by the W3C Internationalization Checker.
Translated content and form behavior
Assert the expected localized labels, messages, and validation text separately from the mechanics of finding and operating controls. Include text expansion cases where longer translations could affect layout, and RTL flows where supported. A locale’s presence in a selector is not evidence that every route and error state is translated.

Dates, numbers, and currency
Check the displayed values against the product’s locale-specific expectations. W3C style guidance recommends locale-neutral data values and unambiguous dates; where a user-facing date, number, or currency format is part of the product contract, encode its expected output in the test rather than inferring correctness from a language label. See the W3C Manual of Style, which is editorial guidance, not a Selenium specification.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Check Unicode through the real user path
Enter representative characters from supported scripts through the application’s form, submit them through the normal interaction, and assert what the user sees afterward. If the page exposes a submitted or returned value, check that too. The Unicode Consortium’s web FAQ recommends UTF-8 for web pages and explains why a consistent encoding matters for multilingual data.
Choose test strings that reflect the scripts and input patterns your product supports; do not treat a single accented character as coverage for every writing system. A browser assertion provides evidence about that exercised path, but it does not prove correct storage or transmission through unobserved databases, email systems, or integrations.

Keep selectors stable across translations
Do not make translated copy the only locator for a control when the application provides a stable identifier or accessible semantic hook. Use that stable hook to find the control, then assert the localized text independently. This separates a translation change from a broken test target and keeps the test aligned with the project’s accessibility conventions. Treat this as general test-maintenance practice, not a Selenium-specific localization standard.
Run the matrix and diagnose failures
Distribute only the combinations you need
Run the highest-priority combinations locally first, then use Selenium Grid when the selected matrix exceeds practical local execution. Grid supports distributing sessions, and Selenium documents scaling across browser and operating-system combinations. Choose coverage for user impact and risk rather than multiplying every possible dimension.
Inspect page-level internationalization settings
Use the W3C Internationalization Checker as a complementary diagnostic for a deployed page. It considers markup and HTTP headers and reports key settings such as encoding, language declaration, and direction, along with errors, warnings, and suggestions. It complements rather than replaces interactive Selenium tests.

Use evolving observability features cautiously
Selenium WebDriver BiDi can expose event streams such as network, console, and JavaScript error events, but Selenium describes its functionality as limited and evolving. Confirm support in the specific browser and binding versions you run before making a BiDi event a required part of the test suite. See the Selenium WebDriver BiDi guide.

If you need a clean capture of a localized page as a diagnostic artifact, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for Selenium’s interactive assertions. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF. Its capture can accept cookie and consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
Use your API key in place of YOUR_API_KEY and the target page in place of the URL below. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

Common failures and what to check
| Symptom | Likely check |
|---|---|
| A control cannot be found after changing locale. | Check whether the test locates it by translated text alone. Use the application’s stable identifier or accessible hook where available, and assert its localized label separately. |
| The page appears translated but direction or language checks fail. | Inspect the rendered language declaration and direction on the relevant document or content region; use the W3C Checker to inspect markup and HTTP headers. |
| Unicode text is wrong after submission. | Trace the real input and return path exercised by the test. A browser check does not cover unseen storage or integration boundaries; inspect those separately if the failure occurs downstream. |
| A layout assertion fails only in one environment. | Identify the exact browser and operating-system combination, locale, and route. Keep the matrix focused on supported environments and investigate rendering or input differences there. |
| A BiDi event listener is unavailable. | Confirm the selected browser and Selenium binding support the needed event; BiDi functionality remains limited and evolving, so do not assume uniform availability. |
Frequently asked questions
Does one language-switch test cover internationalization?
No. It covers only the settings and user behavior explicitly asserted in that flow; language, direction, translated states, Unicode paths, and locale-sensitive values need their own applicable checks.
Does a passing Selenium test prove every translation is correct?
No. It verifies expected outputs for the pages, states, and strings your test exercises. Broader translation quality and unvisited content require other review and validation.
