How to Handle Common Objections to Buying Life Insurance

Life insurance is worth considering when your death could leave another person facing lost income, unpaid debt, housing or childcare costs, education bills, or final expenses. It may be unnecessary if nobody depends on your income or services and your savings and other arrangements already cover the obligations that would remain. The right response to an objection is therefore not a sales pitch: identify the financial exposure, match the policy to the length of that exposure, and read the contract’s future costs and guarantees before committing.

This guide addresses the questions consumers commonly raise, using U.S. consumer guidance from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). State rules, products, underwriting and policy wording vary, so use the policy itself and your state insurance department for final answers.

Do I need life insurance?

Start with the people and bills that would remain if you died. The NAIC recommends considering dependents, continuing obligations and alternatives such as savings or investments before deciding whether to buy. Its consumer guidance is available in the purchase-process tips and the Life Insurance Buyer’s Guide.

List the financial exposure

  • Income a spouse, partner, children or another dependent would lose.
  • Unpaid mortgage, rent, car loans, credit cards, student loans or other debts that would not disappear at death.
  • Childcare, eldercare, household work or other services you provide and the cost of replacing them.
  • Education funding, ongoing medical or support costs, and regular household bills.
  • Funeral, burial and other final expenses.

Then identify resources that could meet those needs: existing savings, investments, retirement benefits, employer benefits, property, a partner’s income or other arrangements. If those resources cover the obligations and no one relies on your future earnings or services, the case for insurance may be limited. That is an individual assessment, not a rule that everyone should own a policy.

Estimate the period of need

Ask how long each obligation lasts. A mortgage may have a defined repayment period; childcare and education needs may decline as children become independent; income replacement may be needed until a survivor can retire. A policy that lasts longer than the exposure can cost more than necessary, while a policy that ends too soon can leave a gap.

It costs too much

Budget concerns are legitimate. Do not compare a permanent policy with a term policy solely by looking at one initial quote. First decide the amount, type and duration that address the exposure, then compare similar policies from different insurers. The NAIC says term insurance is generally more affordable than permanent insurance, particularly in early durations, but an actual premium depends on the applicant and contract. No current, comparable premium figure can be applied to every reader.

Check the entire premium schedule

  • Is the premium level for the stated term, or can it increase at scheduled intervals?
  • What is the highest premium that could apply, and at what age or policy year?
  • Is the quoted amount guaranteed, or does it depend on assumptions?
  • For renewable term coverage, what will renewal cost and what age limits apply?
  • Are there fees, charges or surrender consequences that affect the cost of leaving a permanent policy?

Ask for quotes that use the same death benefit, term, underwriting class and payment frequency. A lower first-year premium is not a meaningful bargain if later premiums rise beyond your budget or if the policy provides less protection. The NAIC’s overview of life insurance explains the distinction between term and cash-value coverage and the importance of checking guarantees and costs: NAIC life-insurance topics.

Right-size the benefit

Rather than dropping coverage entirely because a desired amount is unaffordable, recalculate the obligations and consider a smaller benefit or a shorter period. Do not buy an amount that you cannot keep in force. An insurer or licensed professional can provide quotes, but you should decide the need and sustainable budget before accepting a recommendation.

I don’t understand the choices

Most objections become clearer when you separate duration, payment guarantees and policy-value features. Term insurance covers a specified period and pays a death benefit only if death occurs during that term. Whole life and other cash-value forms are designed as permanent coverage and include policy values and additional charges. Universal and variable life have different ways of handling premiums, values and investment or interest assumptions; neither should be treated as a guaranteed investment return without reading the contract.

Feature Term insurance Cash-value insurance
Coverage period Specified term; death benefit is payable if death occurs during that term. Designed for lifetime coverage, subject to the contract remaining in force.
Premium pattern May be level for an initial period or increase on renewal; the schedule and guarantees are contract-specific. Premiums and required payments vary by product; examine guaranteed and nonguaranteed schedules.
Policy value Generally does not build cash value. Includes cash or policy values, charges and possible surrender consequences.
Renewal and conversion May allow renewal or conversion, often with age limits, deadlines or different pricing. Conversion is usually not the central feature, but the policy still has specific conditions and limits.
Best question to ask Does this term match the years of financial dependence? Do I genuinely need lifetime coverage and understand the cost, guarantees and value mechanics?

These are categories, not promises about every contract. The NAIC’s buying tips advise comparing guarantees, premiums, policy values, renewal and conversion provisions, and surrender terms in the actual policy and illustration.

Guaranteed versus nonguaranteed values

Ask the insurer to identify every guaranteed premium, death benefit and policy value separately from values based on assumptions. An illustration can show how a policy might perform, but nonguaranteed values can change. Ask what happens if a dividend, interest credit or investment performance is lower than illustrated, and whether additional payments would be needed to keep coverage in force.

I don’t want a medical exam or to share health details

Application requirements depend on the insurer and policy. Some applications request less detailed health information, while others may require records, laboratory tests or an examination. A simplified process is not automatically cheaper or guaranteed to be approved. The NAIC buyer guide warns that a policy requiring less health information will usually cost more and provide less coverage than one using detailed underwriting.

Answer health questions accurately

Read every question, disclose requested diagnoses and treatments, and ask the insurer how it defines terms you do not understand. The buyer guide cautions that false statements can lead to reduced or canceled coverage. Do not assume that an agent’s informal assurance overrides the application or policy language.

Compare the trade-off, not just the convenience

Ask for the benefit limit, premium, waiting or contestability provisions, evidence requirements and any age restrictions for the less-detailed application. Compare it with a fully underwritten version using the same benefit and term. The useful question is whether the time and information saved justify the potentially higher cost and lower coverage for your situation.

Will life insurance provided at my workplace be enough?

Employer coverage can be valuable, but its amount and durability may not match your household’s needs. Obtain the certificate or summary plan description and check the death benefit, exclusions, beneficiary rules, cost to you, and whether coverage ends or changes when employment ends. Do not assume that a workplace benefit follows you to a new job or that an optional amount will remain affordable after leaving.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the benefit with the exposure

Put the workplace death benefit beside the income, debts, housing, childcare, education and final-expense needs you identified. If a gap remains, ask whether an individual policy could fill it. Keep the two decisions separate: workplace coverage may be part of the plan, but it does not automatically establish that you need no personal coverage.

Will I get a better deal on the internet?

Online applications can make comparison easier, but a website does not by itself make a policy cheaper or more suitable. Compare like policies: the same death benefit, term, premium guarantee, underwriting class and renewal or conversion provisions. Verify who is offering the policy, whether the insurer is authorized in your state, and how you will receive the contract and required notices.

Use online quotes as a starting point

  1. Record the insurer, policy form, benefit amount, term and underwriting assumptions for each quote.
  2. Ask whether the displayed premium is an estimate, a guaranteed amount or an introductory figure.
  3. Request the policy, illustration and schedule of future premiums before paying.
  4. Confirm how health information is collected, protected and verified.
  5. Check the insurer’s financial-strength information through reputable rating companies and confirm authorization with your state insurance department.

The NAIC recommends comparing policies and companies and reading the contract rather than relying on a presentation alone. Its consumer guide listing is available at NAIC consumer guides.

Verify the company and representative

  • Ask your state insurance department whether the insurer is authorized and whether disciplinary information is available.
  • Check financial-strength ratings from established, reputable rating companies. A rating is an indicator, not a guarantee of a claim outcome.
  • Confirm the representative’s license and the insurers they are appointed to represent.
  • Make checks payable to the insurance company, not to an individual agent, as the NAIC advises.

Demand a written comparison

Request the policy form, illustration, premium schedule, exclusions, riders, beneficiary provisions, grace period, reinstatement rules and surrender or nonforfeiture options. Ask the representative to label each item as guaranteed or nonguaranteed and to explain what could cause the policy to lapse. If an answer is not in the contract, treat it as an explanation to verify, not as a promise.

I might not keep paying

Affordability must be tested beyond the first premium. A missed payment can end protection, and the remedy differs by policy. Term insurance may lapse when premiums stop after the applicable grace period. Permanent policies may have cash-out or nonforfeiture options, but using policy value can reduce the death benefit or exhaust the policy. The exact result is controlled by the contract.

Before buying, model a bad year

  • Would the premium still fit after a job loss, reduced hours, illness or other major expense?
  • For term coverage, what is the renewal premium and the insurer’s maximum renewal age?
  • For permanent coverage, what happens after a missed payment, and how long can existing value support premiums?
  • What are the grace period, reinstatement deadline, interest charge and evidence-of-insurability requirements?

The Insurance Information Institute explains that reinstatement can require back premiums, interest and potentially a new health examination; review its consumer explanation and your own contract at If I Can’t Pay My Premium, What Should I Do?.

If you are already behind

  1. Call the insurer before the grace period expires and ask for the exact date protection would end.
  2. Ask whether a payment arrangement, dividend option, loan, reduced paid-up option or other nonforfeiture provision is available under your policy.
  3. Get any change in writing and ask how it affects the death benefit, cash value, interest and future premiums.
  4. If reinstatement is proposed, ask about back premiums, interest, health evidence and whether contestability provisions restart.

What should I consider when deciding to buy a policy?

Decision point Questions to answer in writing
Need and amount Who depends on my income or services, what debts and bills remain, and what resources already cover them?
Duration How many years does each need last, and does the term end before or after that date?
Premiums What is due now, what can change, and what is the highest scheduled or illustrated amount?
Guarantees Which death benefits, premiums and values are guaranteed, and which depend on assumptions?
Underwriting What health information, records, examination or other evidence is required, and what trade-off applies if less is requested?
Renewal and conversion Can the policy be renewed or converted, by what deadline, at what cost and until what age?
Cash value and charges How are values calculated, what fees apply, and what happens if the policy is surrendered or borrowed against?
Failure to pay What is the grace period, lapse result, nonforfeiture option and reinstatement process?
Company and jurisdiction Is the insurer authorized in my state, and where can I check its financial strength and complaint information?

What should I know about the process?

  1. Define the need. List dependents, income replacement, debts, services, education, housing and final expenses, then subtract resources that would be available.
  2. Choose a provisional term and benefit. Match the period to the longest material need instead of selecting a number because it is commonly advertised.
  3. Collect comparable quotes. Use the same benefit, term, payment frequency and underwriting assumptions with each insurer.
  4. Read the illustration and contract. Separate guarantees from assumptions; check exclusions, riders, renewal, conversion, lapse, reinstatement and surrender provisions.
  5. Complete the application carefully. Give accurate health and lifestyle information and retain a copy of what you submitted.
  6. Wait for the issued policy. Review the delivered contract during any applicable free-look period and confirm that it matches the application and illustration.
  7. Set a maintenance system. Record beneficiaries, premium due dates, insurer contact details and where the policy is stored; review the plan after major family, employment or debt changes.

Replacing an existing policy requires extra care

Do not cancel an existing policy merely because a new application has been submitted or a new quote looks cheaper. The NAIC advises keeping the old policy until the replacement has been bought, issued and reviewed. A change in health during the process can affect eligibility or price, and a replacement can trigger new contestability, surrender charges, fees or a new schedule of premiums.

Compare old and new side by side

  • Death benefit and coverage end date.
  • Current and future premiums, including renewal increases.
  • Cash value, surrender charges, loans and tax consequences described by the insurer.
  • Conversion, reinstatement, exclusions and contestability provisions.
  • Beneficiaries, riders and any loss of rights under the old contract.

Ask both insurers and your state insurance department about replacement rules that apply where you live. Do not let an agent surrender the old policy for you without understanding the written authorization and consequences.

When an objection is actually a warning sign

Some hesitation identifies a problem with the proposed sale rather than with insurance itself. Pause when a representative refuses to provide the policy form, presses you to sign before reading, presents nonguaranteed values as certain, minimizes health questions, avoids explaining future premiums, asks for payment to an individual, or tells you to cancel existing coverage immediately. Obtain documents, verify the company and seek an independent explanation before proceeding.

Insurance rules and product availability differ by state and insurer. For U.S. consumer guidance, begin with the NAIC’s life-insurance topic page, its Life Insurance Buyer’s Guide, and your state insurance department. Those resources cannot replace the policy contract, which controls your rights and obligations.

A practical decision rule

Buy only when a specific financial need exists, the benefit and duration fit that need, and the premium remains affordable under the policy’s highest realistic cost. Prefer a contract you can explain in your own words: when it pays, what you must pay, what is guaranteed, what can change, and what happens if you stop. If you cannot answer those questions from the written documents, the objection has not been resolved yet.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
