When your fantasy quarterback is on bye, replace him in your lineup before the platform’s player-lock deadline. Start a suitable active quarterback already on your roster if you have one; otherwise, compare waiver-wire options using your league’s scoring, the player’s expected role, matchup and latest news. Keep the cost of a one-week pickup—including the player you may have to drop—in proportion to how long the addition could help your team.
Confirm the bye and your league’s deadlines
Check your roster and the quarterback’s schedule to confirm that his NFL team is on bye. He will not play that fantasy week, so leaving him in an active lineup slot means that slot will not produce points. Player-lock timing and waiver processing depend on your platform and league settings. Check your league’s transaction rules and submit any claim early enough to process; do not assume a default setting applies to a custom league.

Look for an active, suitable backup quarterback already on your roster. If you have one, compare him with the available alternatives before spending waiver priority or FAAB. In a standard one-quarterback league, carrying an extra QB all season can use a bench spot that might serve another need, but roster size, lineup format and league rules determine whether that tradeoff makes sense.

Compare available replacements
If you need to add a quarterback, inspect your waiver wire and, when your platform allows, free agents. A player being described as “streamable” is not an automatic start: his expected role, current status, opponent and your scoring settings all matter.
- Expected role and status: Check whether the quarterback is expected to start and whether recent news has changed that expectation.
- Scoring fit: Consider how your league values passing touchdowns, rushing production, yardage and bonuses. The best fit can differ between scoring formats.
- Matchup and game context: Use current weekly analysis to inform your decision, not as a guarantee. NFL Fantasy’s Week 4, 2026 quarterback analysis, published September 30, 2026, illustrates how streamer choices depend on the available field and matchup. Its player recommendations apply to that slate, not future weeks.
- Future value: Consider whether the quarterback could help again during a later bye week or provide injury insurance after this one.
There is no universal scoring threshold or guaranteed streamer outcome. The right choice depends on your roster, league settings and the quarterbacks available that week.

Weigh the acquisition cost
Before claiming a player, check how your league handles waivers. It may use waiver priority, FAAB (a budget for bidding on players) or another process. An add can also require dropping someone from your roster; NFL.com’s beginner’s guide to fantasy football explains these acquisition mechanisms.

Submit the move and check your lineup again
- Confirm the quarterback’s listed BYE week on your fantasy roster or schedule.
- Check your league’s waiver-processing time and the platform’s player-lock deadline.
- Choose a suitable active rostered backup or submit a claim for a replacement, following your league’s waiver rules.
- After waivers process, check that the transaction succeeded and that the player is in the correct active lineup slot.
- Before kickoff, recheck the quarterback’s status and any relevant news. NFL.com’s fantasy football guide also recommends planning depth and considering an early waiver pickup as a major player’s bye approaches.
