How do I access a blocked subreddit? First identify what “blocked” means in your case: the community may be private or restricted, its moderators may have banned your account, Reddit may have acted against your account, or Reddit may have banned the community itself. Each situation has a different official next step—and some do not offer a user-side route to access.
How to tell what kind of restriction you’re seeing
Check the exact notice and whether the problem affects viewing, posting, one community, or your whole Reddit account. The wording and scope help distinguish a community setting from a moderator decision or a platform action.

| What you see | What it may mean | Official next step |
|---|---|---|
| You can view the community, but cannot post or comment | It may be restricted; participation may be limited to approved users. | Request approval from the moderators if you want to participate. |
| The community is private or unavailable to nonmembers | It may be private, so only moderator-approved members can view it. | Ask the moderators for approval. |
| A notice says you are banned from one subreddit | A moderator imposed a community-level ban. | Appeal through mod mail, not direct chat. |
| Reddit says your account is banned | This is an account-level action rather than a ban from just one community. | Follow the appeal route in the account notice or the relevant Reddit Help guidance. |
| The community itself is marked as banned | Reddit banned the community. | There is no user-side access route while that community remains banned. |
Private and restricted communities: viewing is different from participating
Reddit distinguishes public, restricted, private, and premium-only communities. In a public community, Reddit account holders can view and participate. A restricted community can remain viewable while limiting posting or commenting to approved users. A private community is visible only to people approved by its moderators. Reddit describes these community types in its community visibility guidance.
If the community is private
Contact the moderators using whatever community contact route is available and briefly ask to be considered for approval. Moderators control the approved-user list, so access depends on their decision; a request does not guarantee approval or a response. Reddit explains the moderator-managed list in its approved users guidance.

- Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.

- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
- Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards can be sent by email/SMS and can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
If the community is restricted
Being able to see a restricted community does not necessarily mean you can post or comment there. If participation requires approval, ask the moderators to approve you. Reddit’s description of community types distinguishes visibility from participation.
If a moderator banned you from a subreddit
Use mod mail to explain, briefly and specifically, why you believe the ban should be overturned. Do not contact moderators through direct chat about a community ban; Reddit’s guidance on contacting moderators points users to mod mail for this situation.

A sitewide account action is separate from a ban imposed by one subreddit’s moderators. Follow the appeal instructions in Reddit’s account notice or the Help Center page that matches the reason given. Reddit’s account status overview describes account actions, while its guidance for accounts banned for spam, inauthentic activity, or ban evasion explains a specific category of action and its appeal route. Use that page only if its stated reason matches your notice.

This is not a private-community approval issue or a personal ban. Reddit states: “Banned communities are inaccessible to all users.” A moderator approval request or account appeal does not provide access to a community Reddit has banned. See Reddit’s Banned Communities guidance.

Why workarounds are not the right next step
Reddit’s official guidance points to moderator approval, mod mail, or the relevant account appeal—not to using a VPN, another account, or a third-party tool to get around a restriction. Diagnose which decision applies and use the corresponding process above.
