Link building can expand a website’s reach in two distinct ways: links help search engines discover pages, and links on other websites give their readers a path to yours. Google also uses links as one signal when assessing relevance, but a backlink does not guarantee rankings, visits, or sales. The practical goal is to earn and create links that make sense to people—and to measure what Google reports without treating correlation as proof of cause.

How links can expand your reach

Google says it uses links both to help determine page relevance and to find new pages to crawl. Those are separate mechanisms: a crawler discovering a URL is not the same as a person visiting it, and neither outcome guarantees a search position or a business result. Google’s link best practices describe links as one signal among its systems, not a standalone ranking formula.

Discovery by search crawlers

A link from a crawlable page can give Google a route to discover the linked page. This can be useful when publishing new content or connecting pages that are otherwise difficult to find. Discovery does not mean that Google will index the page, rank it, or send it traffic.

Relevance signals

Links can help search systems understand how pages relate to one another, but their presence is not a guaranteed vote for a particular ranking. Google does not promise a set ranking improvement for acquiring a link, and the documentation gives no universal link count that a page should target.

Referral visits

A link can also bring a human reader directly from another site. Its referral value depends on whether the linking page reaches people likely to care, whether the link is clear in context, and whether the destination fulfills the expectation it creates. A link may help a reader even when it produces no measurable search change.

What makes a link useful

Evaluate a link opportunity by its fit and usefulness, not by volume alone. These are practical editorial checks based on Google’s published guidance, not a scoring formula or universal quality threshold.

  • Audience relevance: Is the linking page read by people who may genuinely need the destination?
  • Editorial context: Does the link belong naturally in the surrounding content, with an understandable reason for clicking?
  • Destination usefulness: Does the page answer the question or meet the need suggested by the link?
  • Discovery and navigation: Can people and crawlers follow the link to a relevant page?
  • Policy treatment: Is the link paid, sponsored, or affiliate-related, and is it qualified appropriately?
  • Evidence quality: Is a claim about link performance based on official guidance, an observed correlation, or an unsupported guarantee?

Build links that help people navigate

Google recommends links that crawlers can parse and anchor text that is descriptive, reasonably concise, and relevant to the destination. Use a standard anchor element with an href, and write link text that tells readers what they will find. Avoid vague labels when a more specific description would help, as well as keyword-stuffed text that reads unnaturally.

Connect important pages internally

Internal links help readers move through your site and can help Google understand its pages. Google recommends that every page you care about have at least one internal link from another page. Link from relevant pages using wording that explains the destination; there is no prescribed ideal number of links for each page.

Link out when it helps the reader

External links can cite evidence, provide useful background, or let readers verify a claim. Google says site owners do not need to fear linking out. Give readers enough context to understand where a link leads and why it is relevant.

Earn links without turning them into a scheme

Focus outreach and publishing on usefulness, genuine relevance, and audience value. A link that exists primarily to manipulate rankings is different from a link that helps readers discover a resource. Google warns against link schemes; its systems may reassess spam links, so acquiring links through manipulative arrangements is not a dependable shortcut.

Paid, sponsored, and affiliate links need appropriate qualification. Google says affiliate links are generally acceptable when qualified with rel="sponsored", whether added manually or dynamically. Its guidance also addresses sponsored and guest posts. See Google’s link qualification and link spam guidance for the policy details. Do not assume that a compliant link guarantees a ranking gain.

What link-building performance evidence can—and cannot—show

An Ahrefs roundup labeled 2026 reports a positive correlation between the number of websites linking to a page and its search traffic. It also reports a positive correlation between higher Google search-results positions and acquisition of new followed referring domains in an analysis of 10,000 search results. These are observational associations, not proof that links alone caused more traffic or higher positions, and they do not predict the result for an individual site. Ahrefs’ 2026 SEO statistics roundup does not establish a typical traffic uplift caused by link building.

The Google sources explain how links can be used and what its reporting shows; they do not quantify a typical referral or organic traffic gain from a campaign. Treat any promised percentage, guaranteed placement, or fixed return as unsubstantiated unless it is supported by evidence relevant to your own situation.

Check which links Google reports

Google Search Console’s Links report lets site owners inspect the linking information Google provides, including top linking sites, pages receiving links, link text, and internal links. To review it, open your property in Search Console and select Links in the left navigation. Google documents the report and its sections in its Links report help page.

Use the report to examine which pages are linked, what anchor text is shown, and whether internal links connect the pages your site cares about. It is a view of the data Google reports, not a complete or real-time census of every link on the web. A third-party backlink index should not be assumed to match Google’s data.
