How to Group WiiM Speakers and Sync Playback Across Rooms

To play the same audio in several rooms, connect your phone and every participating WiiM device to the same network, open the WiiM Home app, tap the chain-link icon on the device that will receive the source, select the other devices as followers, and tap Done. The first device is the group lead: it receives the audio and broadcasts it to the followers. If rooms drift out of time, open Devices > the device settings > Sound > Sync Audio and try Auto Sync before making a manual latency adjustment.

What WiiM multi-room grouping does

A WiiM group is a synchronized playback session made from two or more WiiM endpoints on one local network. An endpoint might be a WiiM speaker or a WiiM streamer connected to an amplifier or powered speakers; the app groups the WiiM devices, not arbitrary wireless speakers. One endpoint is the group lead and the others are followers. The lead receives the selected stream or the audio entering its physical input, then sends that audio to the followers so every room plays the same program.

The lead matters when you are distributing a physical source. A television, CD player, turntable, or computer must be connected to the lead’s available input. The exact input—such as an analog, optical, coaxial, or other connection—depends on the WiiM model and the source, so check the specifications for your particular device rather than assuming every model accepts every source. Once the source is entering the lead, the grouped followers receive it over the network.

WiiM’s current multi-room guide limits this mode to 48 kHz/16-bit audio quality. That is a multi-room system limit, not a claim that every WiiM product or every standalone listening mode has the same ceiling. The official guide was modified July 23, 2026 (WiiM multi-room setup and feature guide).

Prepare the network and devices

Do these checks before creating a group:

  • Install or open the current WiiM Home mobile app.
  • Connect the phone running the app to the same local network as every WiiM device you intend to group.
  • Power on each device and wait until it appears in the app’s Devices view.
  • Identify which device is physically connected to the source, if you are distributing TV, CD, turntable, or computer audio. That device should become the lead.
  • Confirm that each room has a compatible WiiM playback endpoint. If a room has no endpoint, you need an additional compatible WiiM device; if you are creating left/right stereo, you need two compatible devices and should verify pairing support for the exact models.

Keep the network stable while you configure the group. A phone on a guest network, a WiiM device on a different access point or VLAN, or a device that has not finished joining Wi-Fi can prevent discovery. If a device is missing from Devices, fix that connection first instead of trying to add it by name.

Create a standard WiiM group

  1. Open WiiM Home. Confirm that the phone and all intended WiiM devices are on the same network.
  2. Open Devices. Locate the WiiM device that is connected to your source, or choose the device you want to act as the lead for network-streamed music.
  3. Tap the chain-link icon on that device. This opens the grouping controls.
  4. Select the followers. Tap each additional WiiM device that should play the lead’s audio.
  5. Tap Done. WiiM creates the group, with the device you started from as the lead.
  6. Select the new group for playback. Start the source or choose a stream. The lead receives it and the followers play it in sync.

The first device in the group is the group lead, according to WiiM’s official wording. You can normally change the whole group’s volume together or adjust an individual device’s volume when one room needs to be quieter or louder. Changing a room’s level does not create a new group; it only changes that endpoint’s output level within the current session.

Use a TV, turntable, CD player, or computer in every room

For a physical source, connect the source to the lead before grouping. For example, connect a turntable’s compatible output to the lead, select that input, and then add the other rooms as followers. The same principle applies to a television, CD player, or PC: the lead must be the WiiM device that actually receives the source signal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Input availability is model-specific. A digital television output may require a WiiM model with the matching digital input, while a turntable may need a suitable line-level path or a phono preamp before the WiiM input. Do not infer a particular input from the fact that another WiiM model has it. Once the lead is receiving the source, the other grouped devices do not need a direct cable from the TV or turntable; they receive the lead’s network broadcast.

Physical-input distribution is different from selecting a network service in the app. If you select a streaming service, the lead is still the device coordinating the group, but the content arrives through the network rather than through a cable attached to the lead.

Save a room combination as a persistent group

If you repeatedly use the same rooms, save their combination instead of rebuilding it each time:

  1. In WiiM Home, open Devices.
  2. Tap Groups.
  3. Choose Create Group.
  4. Select the WiiM devices to include and give the group a name.
  5. Later, choose the saved group from the Now Playing output selector or the device link control.

WiiM says persistent groups are available in WiiM Home and also appear in Spotify’s device list. The persistent-group help article says they do not appear in AirPlay, TIDAL, Amazon Alexa, or Google Home. That visibility rule applies to persistent groups; it should not be generalized to every grouping mode or to every third-party application. The official persistent-group instructions were modified October 23, 2025 (WiiM persistent groups).

Correct rooms that are out of time

Small timing differences become obvious when two rooms are close together or when you stand in a doorway. WiiM provides a per-device synchronization control:

  1. Open Devices in WiiM Home.
  2. Select the device whose timing needs correction and open its device settings.
  3. Go to Sound > Sync Audio.
  4. Try Auto Sync first. WiiM says the automatic process may take about 30 seconds.
  5. If the result is still wrong, choose Manual Sync and change the latency for that device.

Use the direction of the error as your guide. Increase latency for a speaker that plays behind the other rooms; decrease latency for a speaker that plays ahead. Make a small change, listen again at the boundary between rooms, and repeat until the transient—such as a handclap or drum hit—arrives together.

The signal path affects the amount of correction required. WiiM notes that analog outputs typically add no delay, while digital outputs such as coaxial or optical usually introduce latency and can sometimes exceed 50 ms. That figure comes from WiiM’s June 12, 2025 audio-delay guidance, not from an independent measurement (WiiM audio-delay adjustment).

A WiiM device connected to a Bluetooth speaker may be out of sync with the rest of the group. Bluetooth buffering can vary by speaker, so do not promise perfect timing for a Bluetooth-connected endpoint or assume that one latency value will eliminate every mismatch. If synchronized room-to-room playback is the priority, a directly connected or networked WiiM output is a more predictable path.

Group volume and room control

After selecting the group, use the group volume control when all rooms should move together. Use an individual device control when one room has a different acoustic level or listening distance. If a room appears silent, first check that its endpoint is selected as a follower, its local volume is not muted, and the source is actually playing through the lead. Removing and re-adding a device can rebuild a group whose membership has become stale after a network change.

Create a left/right stereo pair

For a stereo arrangement, create a group containing two WiiM devices, then use the channel control to assign one device to the left channel and the other to the right channel. This is a channel assignment within a two-device group, not the same as placing independent full-range playback in two rooms.

The general WiiM guide describes the left/right setup but does not establish compatibility for every model combination. Check the documentation for the exact two devices before buying a second endpoint or treating a pair as a supported stereo configuration. Keep both devices on the same network and correct any residual timing with Sync Audio after assigning channels.

Understand the multi-room quality and connection limits

Item What WiiM states Practical implication
Multi-room audio quality Currently limited to 48 kHz / 16-bit High-resolution playback is reduced to the multi-room mode’s stated limit.
Digital-output delay Coaxial or optical outputs can introduce latency, sometimes over 50 ms Use Sync Audio when a digital-output room leads or lags.
Bluetooth endpoint May be out of sync with the rest of the group Do not treat Bluetooth as a guaranteed timing reference.
Source routing The lead receives the source and broadcasts it to followers Connect a TV, CD player, turntable, or PC to the lead’s available input.

The 48 kHz/16-bit limit is stated in WiiM’s multi-room guide modified July 23, 2026. The latency figure is qualified by WiiM’s June 12, 2025 support article and describes a possible delay from digital outputs, not a universal value for every setup.

When LMS/Squeezelite is a better fit

Lyrion Media Server (LMS) with Squeezelite is a separate synchronized-playback method. It is controlled by an LMS-compatible app rather than WiiM Home and requires the LMS server and the participating devices to be on the same network.

Decision point WiiM multi-room LMS/Squeezelite
Controller WiiM Home; persistent groups can also appear in Spotify An LMS-compatible controller app
Group size stated in the support material Standard grouping instructions allow a lead and one or more followers At most two compatible WiiM devices
Reusable groups Persistent groups can be created in WiiM Home Uses LMS grouping rather than WiiM Home groups
Compatibility exclusions Depends on the WiiM model and input or stereo-pair support WiiM Mini, WiiM Sub Pro, and WiiM Vibelink Amp are excluded from Squeezelite compatibility
Can both methods run together? No. WiiM explicitly says not to use LMS grouping at the same time as WiiM multi-room grouping.

Choose LMS only when its controller workflow and two-device limit suit your system. Do not add the same endpoints to a WiiM multi-room group while an LMS group is active. WiiM’s LMS instructions were modified July 14, 2026 (WiiM LMS/Squeezelite grouping).

Troubleshoot common grouping failures

A device does not appear in Devices

  • Verify the phone and the missing WiiM device are on the same network, not separate guest or isolated networks.
  • Confirm the device has power and has completed its Wi-Fi connection.
  • Close and reopen WiiM Home, then check Devices again.
  • If it still does not appear, reconnect that device to the intended network before attempting to create the group.

The group forms but one room is silent

  • Open the group and verify that the silent endpoint is listed as a follower.
  • Raise that device’s individual volume and check that it is not muted.
  • Confirm the source is playing through the lead, especially when using a physical input.
  • Remove and re-add the endpoint if the group membership is not updating.

Rooms play the same song with an echo

  • Open Sound > Sync Audio on the device that sounds late or early.
  • Run Auto Sync and allow roughly 30 seconds for the process.
  • For manual correction, increase latency on a device playing behind and decrease it on a device playing ahead.
  • Inspect digital coaxial or optical paths and Bluetooth connections, both of which can add unpredictable buffering relative to an analog or network output.

A saved group is missing from another app

Check which type of group you created. WiiM states that persistent groups are available in WiiM Home and Spotify, but not in AirPlay, TIDAL, Amazon Alexa, or Google Home. The absence of a saved group in one of those services does not necessarily mean the WiiM Home group was deleted.

LMS and WiiM grouping conflict

Stop one grouping method before starting the other. LMS/Squeezelite and WiiM multi-room grouping are distinct systems, and WiiM explicitly warns against using them together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A reliable setup checklist

  • Every WiiM endpoint and the controlling phone are on the same network.
  • The source cable is connected to the intended lead, using an input that the specific model supports.
  • The chain-link control shows the correct followers before playback starts.
  • Group volume and each room’s local volume are set appropriately.
  • Timing is checked at a doorway or another position where two rooms can be heard together.
  • Auto Sync is attempted before manual latency changes.
  • Bluetooth endpoints are treated as potentially out of sync.
  • The 48 kHz/16-bit multi-room limit is acceptable for the listening use case.
  • LMS is not running on the same endpoints at the same time as WiiM multi-room grouping.

Which method should you use?

Use standard WiiM Home grouping for ordinary whole-home playback, for distributing a source physically connected to one WiiM lead, and for groups with more than the two-device LMS limit. Save a persistent group when the same rooms recur and you want a quick selection in WiiM Home or Spotify. Use LMS/Squeezelite only for a compatible pair when you specifically want the LMS control ecosystem, and keep it separate from WiiM’s own grouping.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I send turntable audio to WiiM devices in other rooms?

Yes, if the turntable feeds the available input on the WiiM device chosen as the group lead. Add the other WiiM devices as followers in WiiM Home; they receive the lead’s audio over the network. Input and phono requirements depend on the exact WiiM model and turntable.

Why is one room slightly behind the others?

Open that device’s settings and choose Sound > Sync Audio. Run Auto Sync first. If manual adjustment is needed, increase latency for a device playing behind and decrease it for one playing ahead. Digital coaxial or optical outputs can add latency, and Bluetooth speakers may remain out of sync.

Do persistent WiiM groups work in every music app?

No. WiiM says persistent groups are accessible through WiiM Home and Spotify, but do not appear in AirPlay, TIDAL, Amazon Alexa, or Google Home.
