Start with the study’s signed consent form and contact the principal investigator or participant office named there. State exactly what you want to stop—future visits, new sample collection, future data sharing, or all participation—and ask separately what can happen to samples and data already collected. A withdrawal request can stop new activity, but it may not erase information that has been de-identified, placed in a repository, distributed to other researchers, or retained under the approved protocol.

What consent covers in genetic research

Genetic studies may involve a one-time test, repeated collection of blood or saliva, whole-genome or whole-exome sequencing, health information taken from medical records, surveys, and long-term storage of samples or data. Your consent document should explain which activities are planned and whether your material may be used for later studies.

Consent is not a single permanent switch. Depending on the project, you may be asked to choose or acknowledge:

  • Research scope: use only for the named study, use for a specified disease, or broader future health and biomedical research.
  • Data access: unrestricted public access or controlled access in which researchers must apply and meet stated conditions.
  • Material retained: whether physical samples, extracted DNA, cell lines, or other derived materials may be stored.
  • Return of results: whether individual findings or clinically significant results might be offered, and under what conditions.
  • Future choices: whether you can change preferences later through a dynamic-consent process or whether your original choice is fixed.
  • Withdrawal: what happens to new collections, stored samples, study-held data, repository records, and information already sent to outside researchers.

Read these sections before signing. Genomic information can reveal facts about biological relatives and may create privacy concerns for families or identifiable communities, not only for the person who provided the sample.

Giving consent before a study starts

Read the withdrawal section first

The withdrawal language often tells you whom to contact, whether a written request is expected, what will happen to remaining samples, and whether data already shared can be removed. Find the study identifier and the name and contact details for the principal investigator or participant coordinator. If the document says to contact the institution’s research office, use that route rather than guessing an email address.

Compare the choices the study actually offers

Not every project offers every option. When choices are available, compare them on the same five axes:

Decision Questions to ask Why it matters later
Future research scope Is use limited to this protocol, a disease, health and biomedical research, or any future research approved under the project’s governance? A broader permission can support more studies but gives you less control over later topics.
Access route Will data be public (unrestricted) or available only to approved applicants (controlled access)? Public release is harder to reverse; controlled access adds an application and oversight layer.
Use limits Can you restrict use to biomedical work, a specified disease, or non-commercial research? These limits may narrow future uses, but only if the study’s design and governance can enforce them.
Changing preferences Can you revise your choices later, or is consent a one-time decision? A dynamic process may let you change preferences; a fixed process may not.
Withdrawal consequences Will new collection stop? Can stored samples be destroyed? Can repository data be removed from future releases? Stopping future activity and removing material already shared are separate questions.

Ask about repository closure and derived material

Ask what happens if a repository closes, changes operators, or transfers its collection. Also ask whether researchers may create derived materials—such as extracted DNA, cell lines, or sequence files—and whether those derivatives follow the same withdrawal rules as the original sample. The answer should be specific to the repository and consent language, not a general promise.

How to withdraw consent: an actionable process

  1. Gather the records. Locate your signed consent form, study name or identifier, the date you enrolled, and the principal investigator or participant contact listed in the form. Keep any participant ID that the study uses.
  2. Check the required contact method. Follow the form’s instructions. Some studies direct participants to the investigator; others name an institutional research office. The reviewed federal guidance does not establish one universal form, deadline, or confirmation procedure.
  3. Define the scope of your request. Say whether you want to stop all participation or only a particular activity, such as future visits, additional blood draws, new genetic testing, or future sharing with repositories. If you do not specify, ask the team to explain what its default interpretation will be.
  4. Ask for separate decisions about existing material. Request a response about remaining physical samples, data held by the study team, coded or de-identified data in a repository, and data already provided to outside researchers. Ask whether a request can be submitted to remove your record from future repository releases.
  5. Send the request in the instructed form. If the study asks for a written request, use its portal, email, or letter process. NIDDK example consent language describes written instructions and says that no further data or specimens are collected for that study after the request is received; this is an example, not a universal rule.
  6. Save evidence of the request. Keep a copy of your message, attachments, delivery confirmation, and every response. Record the date the team says the request became effective and what actions it agreed to take.
  7. Follow up on unanswered parts. If the response discusses stopping visits but not repository data or stored samples, ask those questions again explicitly. You can request clarification without restarting the withdrawal process.

A clear written request

Use the study’s own form if it provides one. If it does not, a concise message can distinguish the decisions the team must address:

What withdrawal can stop—and what it may not undo

Future participation and collection

A valid withdrawal request normally addresses future activities under the study’s process: additional visits, new samples, new measurements, and prospective data collection. The exact effective date and covered activities come from the study’s instructions and approved protocol. Ask for those details in writing.

Data already collected by the study

Withdrawal does not automatically delete information collected before the request. NIH guidance says investigators may retain and analyze already collected data when that analysis remains within the Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved protocol. The NIH IRB page also states that data collected up to withdrawal remain in the study database. FDA-regulated clinical trials have separate data-retention requirements, so a study team may need to keep records even after you stop participating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sample handling can vary with institutional policy and IRB requirements. Ask whether unused material will be destroyed, retained for the approved study, or converted into derived material that follows a different rule.

Coded or de-identified samples and data

Repositories commonly replace direct identifiers with a code and remove information such as your name. If the key linking that code to you remains with the study, the team may be able to act on a withdrawal request. If the material has been irreversibly de-identified, the repository or researchers may no longer be able to identify which record is yours, making retrieval impossible.

NIDDK example language explains that repository specimens and data are coded and direct identifiers are removed; once sent in that form, they cannot be withdrawn under that example. This limitation is not universal. Identifiability, the repository’s rules, and the study’s consent language determine what can actually be done.

Data already distributed to other researchers

Once data have been sent to approved outside researchers, the original study team may not control copies, analyses, or results already generated. Ask whether recipients must stop new use, destroy local copies, or simply refrain from obtaining future releases. The answer depends on the data-use agreement and repository policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NIH genomic repositories and future releases

For NIH genomic data sharing, a submitting investigator or institution may request removal of an individual’s data from an NIH-designated repository after the participant withdraws or changes consent. NHGRI guidance describes removing the data from future releases and issuing a new dataset version. That action changes what future approved users can obtain; it does not guarantee that copies already distributed for approved research can be retrieved.

NIH sample language states: “Participants may withdraw consent for research use of genomic or phenotypic data at any time without penalty or loss of benefits to which the participant is otherwise entitled.” It also states: “In this event, data will be withdrawn from any repository, if possible, but data already distributed for research use will not be retrieved.” These are model statements. Your study’s consent form and repository terms control the real process.

When you contact the team, ask for the repository name, the access category, whether a withdrawal or consent-change request has been submitted, and the version or release from which your data will be excluded. Do not assume that a repository request removes data from analyses, publications, backups, or copies already downloaded by other researchers.

Broad, specific, and dynamic consent

Broad consent

Broad consent permits future research uses within a governance framework rather than limiting use to one narrowly defined project. NHGRI describes broad consent as maximizing the utility of collected samples and data. The trade-off is that you may have less ability to approve each future study individually. Oversight committees, access controls, and the limits written in the consent form determine what later uses are allowed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

More specific consent

A specific choice may limit use to a named disease, a defined health or biomedical purpose, or non-commercial research. Such limits can reduce the range of later projects but may also make your preference clearer. Verify that the study has a mechanism to enforce the restriction and explain what happens if a proposed use falls outside it.

Dynamic consent

A dynamic process may let participants change preferences over time, often through a secure portal or renewed contact. It is an approach, not a guaranteed feature. Ask how often choices can be changed, whether a change affects existing material or only future use, and how the system records your decision.

Questions to ask before signing

  • Is the project using a targeted genetic test, a panel, whole-exome sequencing, whole-genome sequencing, or another method?
  • Which future research uses are covered, and can the scope be limited to a disease, biomedical research, or non-commercial work?
  • Will data be placed in a public unrestricted repository or a controlled-access repository?
  • Who can approve access, and what conditions must outside researchers meet?
  • Will blood, saliva, DNA, cell lines, or other derived materials be stored, and for how long under the study’s policy?
  • Could an individual result be returned? If so, will confirmation by a clinical laboratory or genetic counselor be required?
  • Can I change my preferences later, and is there a dynamic-consent process?
  • If I withdraw, will new collection stop immediately or after a stated processing period?
  • Can remaining samples be destroyed? Can study-held data be removed? Can repository data be excluded from future releases?
  • What happens to data already distributed, published, analyzed, or copied by other researchers?
  • What happens if the repository closes, changes operators, or transfers the collection?
  • Which privacy risks could affect relatives or a small or identifiable community represented in the dataset?

Common situations and the right next question

Situation What may be possible Question to put to the study team
You have not provided a sample yet. You may be able to decline enrollment or limit future uses before collection. Which consent choices can I change before the first collection?
You want to stop additional visits but allow use of existing data. A partial withdrawal may be possible if the protocol supports it. Can I stop future contact and collection while allowing analysis already authorized?
Your sample remains in the institution’s freezer. The team may be able to destroy or retain it, depending on the consent and policy. What is the disposition of unused and derived material?
Your coded data are in an NIH-designated repository. A submitting institution may request exclusion from future releases. Has a removal request been made, and which future release will reflect it?
Your data were already sent to outside researchers. Future distribution may stop, but retrieval of copies is not assured. What do the data-use agreements require of prior recipients?
Your record was irreversibly de-identified. The holder may be unable to identify or remove it. Is a re-identification key retained, and who controls it?

Limits, privacy, and jurisdiction

The process described here primarily reflects U.S. NIH and NHGRI guidance, NIH repository practice, and related federal consent resources. It is not a substitute for your individual consent form, the institution’s policy, the IRB-approved protocol, repository rules, FDA requirements where applicable, or the law where you live.

Outside NIH-supported research or the United States, the contact point, withdrawal rights, retention rules, and repository procedures may differ. Begin with the study’s own consent materials and ask the institution which local rules apply. If you cannot find the named contact, the institution’s human-research-protection or research-participant office can usually direct your request to the responsible team.

Keeping a useful record

Maintain a folder containing the consent form, study identifier, your request, delivery proof, responses, and any repository or data-release information the team provides. A written record helps distinguish the date you stopped future participation from later actions such as sample destruction or removal from a future repository release. It also gives you a clear basis for asking about an unanswered part of the request without assuming that every form of removal is possible.
