To give Cline eyes, connect an MCP browser server, then ask Cline to capture the page. Playwright MCP is the general browser-automation route documented as compatible with Cline. If you need the Chrome tab you already have open, Browser MCP documents a separate extension-and-server route. After setup, Cline can return a viewport, element, or full-page screenshot for visual inspection.
What “giving Cline eyes” means
Cline is a coding assistant. MCP (Model Context Protocol) lets it call external tools, including browser automation tools that can load pages, inspect structure, and create images. A screenshot gives Cline a visual representation of a page; an accessibility snapshot gives it structured references for understanding and interacting with controls.
The two common workflows are different:
- Playwright MCP: Cline controls a browser managed through Playwright. This is the better fit for repeatable browser automation and fresh sessions.
- Browser MCP: Cline connects to an existing Chrome session through the vendor’s extension and server. Choose this when the page is already open and its current session matters.
Neither route is established as universally superior. Pick the one that matches whether you need a Playwright-managed browser or your current Chrome tab.
Route 1: Connect Playwright MCP to Cline
1. Install the MCP server
Follow the current Playwright MCP installation instructions and the Microsoft Playwright MCP repository’s Cline configuration guidance. Package names and configuration locations can change, so use those instructions rather than copying an outdated command.

2. Add the server in Cline
Open Cline’s MCP server configuration UI or configuration file, as specified by the current Cline instructions. Add the Playwright MCP server entry supplied by Playwright. The important requirement is that Cline can start the server and discover its browser tools; the exact JSON fields depend on the installation method and operating system.
Restart or reload Cline after saving the configuration. In the MCP tools list, verify that browser tools are visible. If the server does not appear, check the executable path, permissions, and Cline’s MCP logs before trying a screenshot.
3. Ask for a screenshot
Use a direct request such as:
- “Open the page and take a screenshot of the current viewport.”
- “Take a full-page screenshot and save it as homepage.png.”
- “Capture the pricing table element and return the image.”
Playwright MCP’s browser_take_screenshot supports the current viewport, a selected element, and the full scrollable page. If you do not provide a filename, the image is returned inline in the tool response. The documented formats are PNG, JPEG, and WebP. A filename can determine the format; otherwise PNG is used.
4. Choose the capture scope
- Viewport: what is visible in the browser window; useful for checking responsive layouts.
- Element: a specific component identified by a selector; useful for cards, charts, or a bug report.
- Full page: the entire scrollable document; useful for long landing pages and regression records.
Ask Cline to wait for the page to finish loading before capture when images or client-rendered content appear late. For a visual bug, include the URL, viewport expectation, and the exact region to inspect.
Route 2: Capture an existing Chrome tab with Browser MCP
1. Install the extension
Browser MCP’s Cline guide describes installing its Chrome extension and the companion MCP server. Use that guide for the current extension package and permissions.

2. Add Browser MCP to Cline
Add the server configuration shown in Browser MCP’s Cline instructions, then reload Cline. The extension must be running in Chrome, and Cline must be able to reach the server.
3. Request the current-tab screenshot
With the desired tab active, ask: “Take a screenshot of the current Chrome tab.” This route preserves the existing tab’s session, which can matter for pages behind a login or pages already configured with a particular state.
Use screenshots and accessibility snapshots together
A screenshot answers “What does the page look like?” It is useful for spacing, visual hierarchy, charts, clipping, missing images, and other appearance problems. It does not reliably identify the role or state of every control.

The snapshot provides references that are better suited to actions; the screenshot provides visual confirmation. A practical sequence is:
- Request an accessibility snapshot to locate the relevant heading, button, or form field.
- Ask Cline to perform the interaction using the referenced element.
- Capture a screenshot to verify the resulting visual state.

For a responsive check
“Capture the current page at the current viewport. Then resize to the target viewport, capture again, and compare navigation, cards, and horizontal overflow.”
For a single component
“Find the pricing table, capture only that element, and save it as pricing.webp.”
For a bug report
“Capture the viewport before clicking the menu, click the menu, capture it again, and describe the visual difference.”
Common failures and fixes
Cline cannot see the MCP tools
The server is not loaded or its configuration is invalid. Confirm the server entry, executable path, permissions, and startup logs, then reload Cline. If the vendor’s current configuration format differs from an example you found, follow the current vendor instructions.
The browser starts but the page is blank
The page may still be loading, may require JavaScript, or may have failed navigation. Ask Cline to wait for the main content and inspect the page before taking the screenshot. Try the URL directly in the managed browser.

The screenshot is only the visible area
Request a full-page capture explicitly. A viewport screenshot and a full scrollable-page screenshot are different scopes.

Provide a filename in the request. Without one, Playwright MCP returns the image inline. Use a filename ending in .png, .jpg, or .webp when you want to make the format explicit.
The existing Chrome tab is not available
Use Browser MCP’s extension route and confirm the extension is installed, enabled, and connected to the companion server. If you do not need the existing session, switch to Playwright MCP.
Cline misunderstands what it sees
Pair the screenshot with an accessibility snapshot and a precise request. Ask it to name the region it is inspecting and to distinguish visual evidence from assumptions.

- Wait for content: client-rendered pages and lazy images can produce incomplete captures if you screenshot too early.
- Control state: an existing Chrome tab may contain login data, personalization, or sensitive content. A managed browser can provide a cleaner, repeatable state.
- Keep artifacts: use stable filenames and record the URL, viewport, and capture scope beside each image for useful comparisons.
- Separate looking from acting: use screenshots for visual checks and accessibility snapshots for reliable element interaction.
- Expect documentation changes: MCP packages, Cline configuration paths, and browser permissions evolve. Verify setup details in the current vendor documentation.

No. Use an accessibility snapshot to identify and act on controls, then use a screenshot to verify appearance.
