Give Claude Code or Codex visual evidence by connecting an MCP screenshot server, asking the agent to navigate or act, and requesting a screenshot immediately after the important state change. The server supplies the browser or desktop-capture tool; MCP is the connection layer.
For most website checks, start with Playwright MCP: it runs an isolated browser, works with both clients, and can save PNG files. Use screenshot-mcp for a native desktop window, Chrome DevTools MCP for an already-running Chromium, Edge, or WebView2 session, and a hosted service when you do not want to run Chromium locally.

What an MCP screenshot server actually does
Model Context Protocol (MCP) connects an AI client to tools. It does not create pixels by itself. An MCP screenshot server exposes a browser, desktop, or hosted-rendering tool that can produce an image; Claude Code or Codex then calls that tool and receives the result.

A reliable visual-evidence loop has four parts:
- Define the target: give the agent the URL or application, viewport or window, and desired filename.
- Act: let the agent navigate, click, fill fields, or inspect the page through MCP.
- Capture: request a screenshot after each meaningful batch of actions.
- Verify: inspect the returned image for the expected page, account state, viewport, overlays, and error screens before treating it as evidence.
Ending an action batch with a screenshot is especially important for computer-use workflows: the model can only reason about what is visible in the returned image, not what you intended it to see.

The key decision is not which client you use; it is where the evidence lives. An isolated browser is safer and reproducible but has none of your normal session cookies. A live-browser connection can see an authorized session but needs deliberate security and connection setup. A native-capture server sees desktop applications that browser tools cannot.
Set up Playwright MCP for Claude Code
Playwright is the straightforward default for a website, including a localhost site. From the project directory, add a project-scoped server:

What to check in the returned image
- The address and page content match the intended target.
- The page is not a login wall, consent screen, bot check, or error page.
- The viewport shows the component or state you asked about.
- Lazy-loaded content, dialogs, and overlays are in the expected state.
Set up Playwright MCP for Codex
Register the same MCP server with Codex:

Confirm that the screenshot shows the dashboard rather than a login or error page.The tool naming differs by client. Playwright tutorials commonly show Claude Code calls such as mcp__playwright__browser_take_screenshot; Codex exposes the corresponding operation with a name such as playwright__browser_take_screenshot. You normally do not need to hard-code the tool name in your prompt: describe the task and let the client select the registered tool.
Localhost and headless behavior
Codex runs Playwright headlessly by default. A localhost URL therefore needs to be reachable from the environment running Codex, and the application must already be serving the route. If the app depends on a local API, start that API first and ensure the browser process can reach it. A screenshot of a server-side error page is still a screenshot; inspect it before assuming the application rendered correctly.

Capture native desktop evidence with screenshot-mcp
Use screenshot-mcp when the evidence is a native application window, a terminal, a desktop dialog, or a browser state that is not accessible through a page-level browser tool. Add it to Claude Code with:

Platform prerequisites
- macOS: grant the terminal or host application Screen Recording permission in System Settings when prompted.
- Linux X11: install the utilities documented by the server, commonly
xdotoolandscrot. - Wayland: support is partial, so a window or region operation may not work even when a full-screen capture does.
If the image is black, empty, or from the wrong display, first confirm the selected display and operating-system permission before changing the agent prompt.
Inspect an existing Chrome, Edge, or WebView2 session
Chrome DevTools MCP is intended for a live Chromium-based browser. It can launch a browser or auto-connect to an existing instance, including Microsoft Edge and WebView2. Choose this route when the evidence depends on an authorized session, an extension, or state already present in the browser you are debugging.
Tell the agent whether it should connect to the existing browser or launch a fresh one, then specify the tab, URL, action, and screenshot point. A live connection is more suitable than isolated Playwright when the page requires a session you are permitted to use. It also requires more care: do not expose unrelated tabs, credentials, or private customer data to the agent.
Use a hosted renderer for public pages
Site-Shot MCP is the hosted option in this set. Its documentation describes real-Chromium rendering, full-page screenshots, country proxies, and ad or cookie-banner removal. The API key is required for captures and consumes a paid plan’s allowance.

A repeatable evidence workflow
- Write the evidence request first. Include the exact URL or app, desired viewport or window, the action to perform, and the output filename. For a test, state the condition that should be visible after the action.
- Register one server that matches the target. Use Playwright for an isolated web page, screenshot-mcp for a native surface, DevTools MCP for a live Chromium session, or a hosted renderer for a public page.
- Perform the smallest useful action batch. Navigate, click, fill, or inspect only what is needed to reach the state. Long batches make it harder to tell which step produced an unexpected screen.
- Capture immediately after the state change. Request a screenshot at the end of each meaningful batch. For a multi-step flow, save separate files so each image has a clear provenance.
- Validate the image. Check page identity, login state, viewport, overlays, loading completion, and visible error text. Do not treat a file’s existence as proof that the right page was captured.
- Preserve provenance. Store the image beside the commit, test run, or issue and record the URL, timestamp, viewport or window, and action that produced it.
Authenticated pages and the “wrong screenshot” problem
The most common surprise with Playwright is an apparently successful capture of a login page. Its isolated profile does not contain your everyday browser cookies or sessions. That isolation is useful for repeatability and privacy, but it means an authenticated page must be logged in through the controlled browser or tested with a deliberately authorized connection.
If the workflow depends on an existing Chrome, Edge, or WebView2 session, use Chrome DevTools MCP and explicitly identify the permitted tab or browser instance. Never ask an agent to inspect a personal browser indiscriminately. For a native login dialog or a desktop app, use screenshot-mcp and capture only the relevant window or region.

Reliability, performance, and cost decisions
Local versus hosted execution
Local Playwright and desktop capture keep page or screen data in the environment you control and avoid a hosted rendering allowance, but you must maintain the browser runtime, operating-system permissions, and any required utilities. They are the natural choice for localhost, internal applications, and native windows.

The agent cannot find the screenshot tool
Confirm that the MCP command was registered with the same client and scope in which you are working. Restart the client after adding a server, then ask it to list or use the registered Playwright, screenshot, or DevTools tool. Check that npx can run the package in the environment where the client starts.
The screenshot is a login page
An isolated Playwright profile has no normal session cookies. Log in through the controlled browser using an authorized test account, or switch to a permitted live-browser connection with Chrome DevTools MCP. Do not copy personal cookies into prompts or source control.
The image shows a consent banner, popup, or chat widget
For local tools, instruct the agent to accept or close the overlay before the final capture, then verify the resulting image.
