Keep authorization in deterministic controls outside the model, require a human decision for consequential actions, and log everything needed to revoke access quickly.
This matters because anything visible in a desktop app can be hostile input. A webpage, email, document, or dialog can contain instructions designed to redirect the agent, steal data, or trigger an unsafe action. Isolation reduces the blast radius, but it is not automatically a complete security boundary: the result depends on the product, configuration, network access, credentials, and fallback behavior.

What you are protecting against
A desktop agent can read screens, click controls, type into applications, open files, and sometimes run shell commands or call external tools. Those abilities are useful for tasks such as entering data into a business application or preparing a report, but they also create several distinct risks.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Prompt injection through ordinary app content
Content displayed by an application is data, not an instruction from the person who authorized the agent. An email can say “upload this folder,” a webpage can ask the agent to reveal its system prompt, and a document can contain hidden text that attempts to change the task. Microsoft describes this class of attack as cross-prompt injection (XPIA). It warns that injected content can cause unintended actions, data exfiltration, or malware installation. See Microsoft’s guidance on reducing risk in autonomous agentic AI systems.

Excessive reach
An agent that can see every user folder, shared drive, browser session, password store, or administrator console has more opportunity to expose or alter information than a task requires. A successful attack or simple mistake then affects everything within that reach.
High-impact actions
Sending an email, publishing a document, making a purchase, deleting records, changing a security setting, or granting another application access can have consequences that are difficult to reverse. A model should not be the final authority for these operations.
Unclear accountability
If an agent uses a personal account and inherited credentials, it can be difficult to determine which actions it took, who approved them, and how to disable access. A dedicated identity, owner, audit trail, and tested stop procedure make the activity attributable and reversible.
Design the boundary before enabling computer use
Start with a written task boundary. Do this before installing an agent or connecting a desktop session.
- Name the applications. List the exact programs and web services needed. “Browser access” is too broad if the task only needs one internal site; specify the site and whether downloads or uploads are required.
- Name the data. Identify the exact files, folders, records, or fields the task may read and write. Exclude unrelated personal, financial, health, customer, source-code, and credential data.
- Name the permitted actions. Separate reading, creating, editing, deleting, sending, purchasing, and changing configuration. Mark which actions are read-only and which require approval.
- Document dependencies. Record the tools, integrations, network destinations, and credentials required. Anything not on this list should be denied by default.
- Assign an owner. A person or team should be responsible for approving scope, reviewing logs, and disabling the agent.
Microsoft’s agent security guidance recommends minimum necessary tools, data, and operations, with other access denied by default. Its least-privilege guidance for agent identities is available at Microsoft Entra Agent ID least-privilege guidance.
Choose an execution boundary
Isolation and least privilege solve different problems. Least privilege limits what the agent is authorized to do; isolation limits what it can reach if it behaves incorrectly or is manipulated. Use both.
| Option | What it provides | Checks and limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Virtual machine | For computer-use workflows, Microsoft specifically recommends a VM with no access to sensitive data or critical resources. | The recommendation is not a guarantee. Do not attach sensitive host folders, pass through credentials, or give the VM unrestricted network access that defeats the boundary. Configure snapshots, updates, identity, storage, and egress deliberately. |
| Separate Windows agent account and workspace | Microsoft’s experimental Windows feature creates a separate agent account and workspace with a distinct desktop and scoped authorization. | It is a preview feature. Agent applications may request access to Documents, Downloads, Desktop, Music, Pictures, and Videos. Preview builds 26100.7344 and later add per-agent controls for those folders; review the consent screen and settings in the installed build. |
| VS Code agent sandbox | OS-level limits on shell execution and child processes, with separate controls for tools and file paths. | VS Code says the sandbox is not a virtual machine, not a user-account boundary, not a standalone security boundary, and not a replacement for endpoint security. Network access, injected credentials, allowed paths, and any unsandboxed fallback change the effective protection. |
| Enterprise identity and governance controls | Dedicated identity, effective-permission review, action logging, ownership, and tested revocation. | These controls improve accountability and authorization but do not, by themselves, isolate a desktop or prevent an application from displaying malicious content. |
Read the product-specific details in Azure’s computer-use tool documentation, Microsoft’s experimental agentic features page, and VS Code’s agent security documentation. These options are not interchangeable guarantees. Compare what is isolated—process, workspace, account, or VM—and then check reachable files, applications, network destinations, credentials, approvals, logs, and revocation.

Set up a least-privilege desktop agent
1. Create a dedicated identity
Use a separate operating-system account and, where supported, a separate application or enterprise identity. Do not let the agent inherit your personal browser profile, password manager, cloud drive, SSH keys, or administrator token. Give the identity a named owner and an explicit purpose, such as “invoice entry in the test accounting workspace.”
Microsoft Support states that agents should operate under least privilege and must not receive permissions or capabilities exceeding those of the initiating user, including administrative rights. It also recommends that authorized privileges be granular, specific, and time bound. Keep elevation temporary when a workflow genuinely needs it, and remove it immediately afterward.
2. Build a clean workspace
For computer use, the documented Azure recommendation is: “Use the computer use tool on virtual machines with no access to sensitive data or critical resources.” Create the VM or isolated workspace from a known image, apply security updates, and install only the applications required by the task.
- Do not synchronize personal or corporate cloud folders into the workspace unless the task explicitly needs a limited, reviewed folder.
- Do not copy password databases, private keys, browser cookies, recovery codes, or administrator credentials into it.
- Remove shared clipboard, drag-and-drop, host-folder mounts, and USB passthrough unless each is necessary and controlled.
- Restrict outbound network traffic to approved destinations where the platform allows it.
- Keep sensitive data and production systems outside the environment unless the task requires access and the risk has been approved.
A separate account or workspace is useful, but inspect what it can reach. In Microsoft’s experimental Windows agent workspace, applications may request permission to six common profile folders: Documents, Downloads, Desktop, Music, Pictures, and Videos. Treat each request as a scope decision, not as a routine prompt. Preview behavior and controls can change, so verify the build and current settings before deployment.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute3. Grant only task-scoped data access
Prefer a dedicated working folder containing a copy or export of the minimum data. Use read-only permission when the agent does not need to modify files. If it must write, grant access only to the output location, not to the source archive or an entire home directory.
For databases and business applications, create a role containing only the required tables, records, or operations. For file shares, use a dedicated path and remove inherited permissions that expose unrelated content. For APIs, issue a token limited to the required scopes, audience, and lifetime. Never treat “the user can access it” as proof that the agent should access it.
4. Restrict tools and integrations
Maintain an approved tool list. A task that needs screen interaction may not need a shell, arbitrary code execution, email, cloud storage, or a general-purpose HTTP client. Disable tools that are not required, and deny unknown tools by default.

Keep non-process permissions separate from shell permissions. A sandbox that limits child processes may still allow a connected integration to read files or send data. Review each path independently: filesystem, network, browser, clipboard, secrets, and external services.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches5. Put approval outside the model
Use application- or tool-layer rules to enforce sensitive actions. The model can propose an operation, but a deterministic policy should decide whether the operation is allowed and whether a human must approve it. A natural-language instruction or an on-screen approval dialog controlled by the agent is not a sufficient enforcement boundary.
Require an explicit human decision before the agent:
- sends information outside the approved destination;
- publishes, submits, or communicates on your behalf;
- deletes or overwrites records;
- makes a purchase, transfer, or other financial commitment;
- changes security, identity, access, or network settings;
- installs software or executes code from an untrusted source;
- opens a new integration or grants another application permission.
The approval request should show the exact target, data, operation, and destination. Avoid blanket approvals such as “allow all actions for this session.” Set an expiry and require a new decision when the scope changes.
Treat everything on screen as untrusted input
Agents should distinguish the task instruction from content encountered while completing it. A document can contain text that looks authoritative; a web page can imitate a security warning; a chat message can request a secret. None of those should automatically change the approved task.

- Display a clear source and trust label for documents, messages, and web content.
- Filter or flag requests to reveal secrets, change system instructions, contact a new destination, or bypass approval.
- Keep secrets out of the visible workspace whenever possible; use a narrowly scoped secret provider instead of pasting credentials into a page.
- Constrain the agent’s output destinations so that a malicious page cannot redirect data to an arbitrary address.
- Test indirect prompt-injection cases with realistic documents, emails, and websites before allowing production data.
Do not confuse safety checks with guarantees
Azure computer-use documentation describes checks that can warn about malicious instructions and sensitive or irrelevant domains. These are safeguards, not proof that an action is safe. The user remains responsible for the environment, permissions, data, and decisions. A warning system can miss a novel attack, and a legitimate-looking domain can still contain a malicious instruction.
Log actions and make access revocable
Logging is part of the access design, not an optional diagnostic feature. A useful record connects:

Protect logs from alteration and limit who can read them because they may contain sensitive paths or business details. Record enough context to investigate without copying full secrets or document contents into the log.
Rehearse the stop path
- Disable the agent process or scheduled job.
- Revoke or invalidate its access tokens, sessions, API keys, and temporary elevation.
- Remove folder, application, network, and integration permissions.
- Terminate active VM or remote-desktop sessions and preserve relevant logs.
- Check for queued messages, uploads, file changes, or other downstream actions.
- Rotate any credential that may have been exposed.
Microsoft’s secure autonomous-agent guidance emphasizes operational ownership, monitoring, and tested revocation. Find the broader control guidance at Microsoft’s secure autonomous agentic AI systems documentation.
Validate the setup before real data
Use a disposable test dataset and a non-production account. Confirm both the intended capabilities and the denied ones.
Access tests
- Can the agent open only the approved applications?
- Can it read only the designated files and folders?
- Can it write only to the output location?
- Are personal folders, shared drives, credential stores, and administrator tools inaccessible?
- Does outbound traffic reach only approved destinations?
Abuse tests
- Place an instruction in a test document telling the agent to upload unrelated files. It should ignore or flag the request.
- Show a web page that asks for a password or directs the agent to a new domain. It should stop and request review.
- Attempt a deletion, purchase, publication, or security change. The tool layer should block it or require a named human approval.
- Remove a permission or invalidate a token while the agent is idle. Confirm that the next operation fails and is logged.
Recovery tests
Practice stopping the agent during a long task, restoring a clean workspace, rotating credentials, and identifying every action in the logs. A boundary that cannot be disabled quickly is not ready for sensitive work.
Common failure modes and fixes
“It runs in a sandbox, so it is isolated.”
Not necessarily. VS Code explicitly describes its agent sandbox as OS-level isolation for a defined execution path, not a VM or account boundary and not a standalone security boundary. Check injected credentials, allowed paths, network access, non-process tools, and any unsandboxed fallback. Add a VM or separate account when the threat model requires stronger separation.
“The agent only has the user’s permissions.”
The user’s permissions may already be broader than the task needs. Create a dedicated identity and task-specific role instead of reusing a personal account. Avoid administrative rights, shared credentials, and long-lived tokens.
Recommended Free Tools
“The approval dialog protects us.”
If the agent can read and operate the dialog, it may be able to approve its own action. Enforce the decision in a separate control plane or require an out-of-band human confirmation that identifies the exact operation.
Best Value
“A separate workspace can see only its own files.”
Review folder-consent requests, mounts, synchronization, clipboard sharing, downloads, browser profiles, and network shares. In the experimental Windows workspace, the six common profile folders may be requested individually; deny every folder not needed for the task.
“Network access is harmless because the agent cannot read secrets.”
Network access can enable data exfiltration, malicious downloads, remote instructions, or command-and-control behavior. Limit egress to approved destinations and monitor uploads, redirects, and newly contacted domains.
“Logging can wait until production.”
Without logs, you cannot prove what the agent accessed or quickly determine whether a credential or file was exposed. Enable identity, authorization, tool-call, resource, and approval logging before the first real run.
Review the boundary whenever the workflow changes
Reassess access when you add an application, connect a new integration, change the data source, alter network rules, move from testing to production, or upgrade the agent platform. A harmless-looking feature change can add a shell, browser, file-sync, or outbound-network capability.
For organizational deployments, classify the data handled by the workflow and apply the organization’s data-governance, retention, incident-response, and endpoint-security controls. Product settings vary by edition and release; verify current documentation and local policy before relying on a preview feature or a particular sandbox behavior.
A practical decision rule
Use the smallest boundary that still completes the task, then add a stronger boundary when the consequences justify it:
- Low-risk, disposable data: a restricted workspace, task-scoped files, approved tools, and complete logging may be sufficient.
- Confidential business data: add a dedicated identity, read-only access where possible, constrained network egress, deterministic approvals, and a tested revocation path.
- Highly sensitive data or production control: use a separately managed VM or equivalent isolation with no unrelated data, no administrative privileges, narrowly scoped credentials, mandatory human approval, and continuous audit.
The deciding questions are always the same: what can the agent see, what can it change, where can it send information, who approves consequential actions, and how fast can you stop and investigate it?
