How to Get Your TV Online Without the Remote: Ethernet, Hotspot, and App Options

The most reliable way to connect a TV without its remote is Ethernet: plug a network cable into the TV or attached streaming player’s LAN port and connect the other end to your router or modem. If there is no usable LAN port, temporarily use a phone hotspot and select it from the TV’s wireless setup. A phone remote app works only when the TV or player is already reachable on the same network, so it is usually not the first solution after a reset or a move.

Choose the workaround that fits your situation

Your next step depends on three facts: whether the TV or streaming player has Ethernet, whether it has previously joined a Wi-Fi network, and whether your phone can provide a hotspot. Use this decision table before changing settings.

Situation Best first option What you need Main limitation
The TV or streaming player has a LAN/Ethernet port Wired Ethernet Ethernet cable and an available router or modem port The cable must reach the device; some players need a compatible USB Ethernet adapter
No Ethernet, but the device can display wireless-network setup Phone hotspot A phone with hotspot service and the hotspot password Streaming uses cellular data and can consume a substantial part of your allowance
The TV or player was already connected to the same home Wi-Fi as your phone Manufacturer mobile app The correct app, supported model, and the same local network The app normally cannot discover a TV that has never joined the network or was reset
The device is offline and offers no usable network setup Physical controls or a replacement remote Buttons on the TV, or a compatible replacement/universal remote Button layouts and menu access vary by model

Method 1: connect the TV or player by Ethernet

Ethernet avoids the need to select a wireless network or type a Wi-Fi password. It is therefore the clearest no-remote workaround when a LAN port is available.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to check first

  • Look along the TV’s rear or side panel for a port labeled LAN, Ethernet, or a network symbol.
  • If the TV uses a separate connection box, inspect that box as well. Samsung documents Ethernet connection through the LAN port on the TV or One Connect Box.
  • For a streaming player, check the player itself. Roku says initial setup can use a wired connection, and some Roku players support wired Ethernet through a USB adapter.
  • Confirm that your router or modem has an unused Ethernet port. If every port is occupied, you may need to disconnect another device temporarily or use a network switch.

Step-by-step wired setup

  1. Turn on the TV or streaming player using its power button.
  2. Plug one end of an Ethernet cable into the device’s LAN/Ethernet port.
  3. Plug the other end into an open LAN port on your router or modem.
  4. Wait for the device to detect the wired connection. Many devices connect automatically without asking for a Wi-Fi password.
  5. Open an internet app or the device’s network screen to confirm that it is online. If the setup screen still asks you to choose wireless, look for a Wired, Ethernet, or Network status option.

Keep the cable connected while you complete software updates or sign in to streaming services. Once the TV is online, the manufacturer’s mobile app may become usable if your phone is connected to the same home network.

If Ethernet does not work

  • Check that both plugs click firmly into place.
  • Try a different router port and, if available, another known-good cable.
  • Check the router’s status lights and confirm that other wired devices can reach the internet.
  • Restart the router, then restart the TV or player.
  • If you are using a USB Ethernet adapter with a streaming player, verify that the player model supports that adapter. Compatibility is model-specific; a random adapter may provide power but no network connection.

Method 2: use a phone hotspot as temporary Wi-Fi

A hotspot can substitute for home Wi-Fi during setup when the TV or player has no Ethernet connection. Roku explicitly documents selecting a phone hotspot as the wireless network, and LG recommends a smartphone hotspot test when diagnosing connection problems.

Before enabling the hotspot

  • Make sure your mobile plan permits tethering and that you know the hotspot name and password.
  • Keep the phone near the TV or player and connect the phone to a charger if possible.
  • Remember that video streaming can use a substantial amount of cellular data. A hotspot is best treated as a setup or diagnostic connection unless you have plenty of allowance.
  • If the TV does not see the hotspot, check whether the phone allows compatibility mode or a 2.4 GHz hotspot. Older televisions may not detect every newer wireless mode.

Step-by-step hotspot setup

  1. Open your phone’s network settings and turn on Personal Hotspot, Mobile Hotspot, or the equivalent label.
  2. Note the exact hotspot network name and password shown by the phone.
  3. On the TV or streaming player, open the wireless-network setup screen. Use the TV’s built-in buttons, an attached player’s controls, or any setup navigation available on screen.
  4. Select the phone’s hotspot name from the list of available networks.
  5. Enter the hotspot password exactly, including capitalization and punctuation.
  6. Wait for the connection confirmation, then test an internet app or update screen.
  7. When setup is complete, return to the network menu and switch the device to your normal home Wi-Fi if you can navigate that menu. Turn off the hotspot afterward to prevent unintended cellular use.

What to do when the hotspot is not listed

  • Move the phone closer and toggle the hotspot off and on.
  • Keep the phone’s mobile-data connection active; a hotspot without cellular service cannot provide internet access.
  • Enable the phone’s compatibility option, if available, so older Wi-Fi hardware can see the network.
  • Restart the TV or streaming player and rescan for wireless networks.
  • If the TV only supports 2.4 GHz, configure the phone hotspot to use 2.4 GHz when that setting is offered.

Method 3: control the device with a phone app

A phone remote app is convenient, but it is not a universal first step. Discovery normally requires the TV or streaming player to be powered on and already connected to the same local network as the phone. Roku documents mobile-app control under those conditions; other manufacturers impose their own model and software requirements.

When an app can work

  • The TV or player has already joined your home Wi-Fi, even if the physical remote is missing.
  • Your phone is connected to that same Wi-Fi network rather than cellular data or a guest network that blocks device discovery.
  • You install the app intended for the exact manufacturer and supported model.
  • The device’s network-control setting is enabled when the model requires one.

Why an app often fails after a reset

A newly reset or moved device has no network identity for the app to find. Putting the phone and TV on the same hotspot does not always solve this: the TV still needs a way to select and join that hotspot, and some phone hotspots isolate connected devices. Use Ethernet, on-screen controls, or a replacement remote to complete first-time network setup.

Basic app setup sequence

  1. Connect the phone to the same home network that the TV or player is using.
  2. Install the manufacturer’s official remote app from your phone’s app store.
  3. Allow local-network or nearby-device permission if the operating system asks.
  4. Open the app and select the discovered TV or player.
  5. Use the app’s directional controls to open the device’s network menu and change Wi-Fi settings if needed.

If no device appears, disable any VPN on the phone, leave a guest Wi-Fi network, confirm that the TV is powered rather than in a deep-off state, and restart both devices. If discovery still fails, the device is probably not connected to the same network or the model does not support app control.

Brand and software differences

Samsung televisions

Samsung places wireless setup under Settings > General > Network on many models. For a wired connection, use the LAN port on the back of the TV or on the One Connect Box, then connect the other end to the router or modem.

Wireless-band support depends on the model and its age. Samsung notes that some older televisions support only 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. If your router or access point is configured as 5 GHz-only, the network may not appear in the TV’s list even when the password is correct. Enable a compatible 2.4 GHz network or use Ethernet instead.

Roku players and Roku televisions

Roku’s initial setup presents Wireless or Wired choices on supported hardware. Select Wired when an Ethernet connection is available. Some Roku players accept wired networking through a USB Ethernet adapter, but support depends on the player model and adapter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If there is no wired option, choose the phone hotspot from the wireless-network list and enter its password. Roku also offers a mobile app, but the player must be reachable on the same network for discovery and control. A hotspot may connect the player to the internet while still making app discovery unreliable, depending on the phone’s network behavior.

LG televisions

LG recommends testing with a smartphone hotspot and also supports Ethernet connections. Menu names differ by webOS generation, so do not assume that instructions for one year apply to another. LG lists a different path for 2021-and-later televisions running webOS 6.0 or newer.

Using the TV’s physical buttons

Most televisions have at least a power button, and some include a joystick or several buttons that can open menus and move through options. The exact controls vary widely: a short press may open a menu, while directional presses may move a cursor. Consult the model manual when possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical button-based approach

  1. Locate the control cluster under the front edge, on the rear panel, or along a side panel.
  2. Press the menu, input, or joystick control to display on-screen options.
  3. Navigate to the network section and select wireless setup or wired status.
  4. Use the available directional and confirm controls to choose your network and enter its password.
  5. If text entry is too difficult with the buttons, connect Ethernet or obtain a compatible remote instead.

Physical controls are useful for emergency access but are rarely efficient for long passwords. They also may not expose every setting available through the original remote.

When a replacement or universal remote is the sensible choice

Buy or borrow a compatible remote when the device has never been networked, lacks Ethernet, cannot display a hotspot list through its buttons, or requires a pairing sequence that only a remote can start. Confirm the exact TV or player model before choosing a replacement. A remote designed for a related model may power the device but omit the menu or pairing commands you need.

For a streaming player, check whether the replacement must be paired wirelessly rather than simply using infrared. Keep the player powered, follow its pairing instructions, and then complete network setup on screen. If you use a universal remote, verify that it includes navigation, selection, back, and keyboard functions rather than only volume and power.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The TV cannot see any Wi-Fi networks

  • Restart the TV and router.
  • Move the router or phone closer temporarily.
  • Check whether the TV supports only 2.4 GHz and ensure a compatible network is enabled.
  • Try a phone hotspot. If the hotspot appears, investigate the home router’s band, name visibility, or security settings.
  • Use Ethernet if the TV has a LAN port.

The network appears, but the password is rejected

  • Re-enter the password slowly; it is case-sensitive.
  • Confirm that you selected your own network rather than a similarly named neighbor’s network.
  • Forget the saved network, restart the TV, and enter the password again.
  • Test the same password on another device. If it fails there too, change or confirm the router password from the router’s own controls.

The TV connects but says there is no internet

  • Check another device on the same network.
  • Restart the router and wait for its internet connection to return.
  • With a hotspot, verify that mobile data is enabled and that your carrier allows tethering.
  • Disconnect VPNs, captive-portal networks, or hotel-style sign-in networks that the TV cannot authenticate.
  • Try Ethernet to separate a wireless problem from an internet-service problem.

The app cannot find the TV

  • Put the phone and TV on the same non-guest Wi-Fi network.
  • Enable local-network permissions for the app.
  • Turn off the phone’s VPN and restart the app.
  • Confirm that the TV is connected, not merely powered on.
  • Use the app made for the exact platform and model.

The connection works only temporarily

  • If you used a hotspot, switch the TV back to home Wi-Fi when setup is finished.
  • Check whether the phone hotspot turns off automatically when idle.
  • For Ethernet, secure the cable so it cannot be pulled loose and test another router port if the link drops.
  • Record the working network name and password so a future reset is easier to complete.

Security and data-use precautions

Use a private, password-protected hotspot rather than an open network. Turn the hotspot off immediately after setup and avoid sharing its password. Because streaming can consume substantial cellular data, monitor your phone’s data counter and the carrier’s allowance before leaving the TV connected for an extended period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a home network, avoid guest Wi-Fi when you intend to control the TV with a phone app. Guest-network isolation can provide internet access while preventing the phone from discovering local devices. A normal private network is more suitable for app-based control.

A practical order of operations

  1. Inspect the TV and any attached player for Ethernet. If a LAN port exists, connect it to the router or modem and wait for a wired status.
  2. If Ethernet is unavailable, create a phone hotspot. Select it from the TV or player’s wireless setup and watch cellular-data use.
  3. Try the manufacturer app only after network reachability exists. Put the phone and device on the same local network and use the app that supports the model.
  4. Use buttons or obtain a compatible remote when setup cannot be reached. Model-specific instructions determine what the physical controls can do.
  5. Switch from the temporary method to your normal network. A hotspot is a fallback, not a substitute for home Wi-Fi when regular streaming would consume mobile data.

What each solution can and cannot solve

Solution Solves initial network setup? Needs the TV already online? Potential extra equipment Typical reason to choose it
Ethernet Usually yes, when the device has a LAN port No Ethernet cable; USB adapter for some players Fastest and most dependable path without a remote
Phone hotspot Yes, if the device can select a wireless network No None beyond a hotspot-capable phone Useful when the router is inaccessible or there is no Ethernet
Manufacturer app Usually no Yes, in most cases Supported phone and app Convenient control after the device is already on the network
Physical buttons Sometimes No None Emergency navigation when no cable or remote is available
Replacement or universal remote Yes No Correct compatible remote Best when menus, passwords, or pairing cannot be operated by buttons

The key distinction is whether the TV can reach a network before your phone tries to control it. Ethernet and a hotspot establish that first connection. An app generally controls an already connected device; it does not magically provide the missing Wi-Fi credentials.
