On the PS5 Safe Mode screen, select Restart PS5. It exits Safe Mode and restarts the console normally, according to PlayStation Support.
Exit Safe Mode with Restart PS5
- On the Safe Mode screen, connect the controller to the console with a USB cable if prompted, then press the PS button.
- Select Restart PS5.
- Wait for the console to restart and check whether it reaches the normal home screen.
Safe Mode starts the console with only its most basic functions active. Sony’s Safe Mode guide describes Restart PS5 as the option that ends Safe Mode and restarts the console normally.

If the PS5 keeps returning to Safe Mode
A repeated Safe Mode start means the normal restart did not resolve the boot problem. Follow Sony’s power-cycle steps before trying options that reset the console:
- Hold the PS5 power button until the console beeps and turns off.
- Disconnect the power cable and leave the console unplugged for 20 minutes.
- Reconnect power and turn the PS5 on.
- If it starts in Safe Mode again, choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, then select Clear System Software Cache.
These are Sony’s recommended steps for a PS5 that remains in Safe Mode. If the problem persists, use PlayStation Repairs to follow Sony’s diagnostic and repair route.

If Safe Mode appeared after an update problem
If the console entered Safe Mode after a failed system software update, or after being offline for a long time, updating its system software may be appropriate. Sony provides update instructions through the Safe Mode menu and a separate manual USB method in its PS5 system software guide.
Requirements for a manual USB update
- A USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Sony’s official PS5 update file, saved using the folder and file names specified in Sony’s instructions.
Follow Sony’s current USB update steps exactly; this is a separate recovery procedure, not a necessary part of a normal Safe Mode exit.

Which Safe Mode options can erase data?
Do not choose a reset simply to leave Safe Mode. Sony warns that some Safe Mode options cause data loss. Reset PS5 and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) delete user data, while Restore Default Settings resets settings without deleting games, apps, captures, clips, or saved data, according to Sony’s description of Safe Mode options.
