To bring a photo library together in Apple Photos, turn on iCloud Photos on your Apple devices using the same Apple Account, then let the library finish syncing. Windows users can access it with iCloud for Windows or iCloud.com/photos; Google Photos users can request a transfer to iCloud Photos. This makes the library available across devices, but it is synchronization—not an independent backup. Keep a separate exported copy if you need protection against accidental deletion or library problems.
What “back up to Apple Photos” means
Apple Photos is the library app; iCloud Photos is the service that syncs that library across supported devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Uploads, edits, and deletions sync across those devices. Apple Support explains: “When you delete photos and videos on one device, they’re deleted everywhere that you use iCloud Photos.”

That behavior is convenient for keeping one current library, but it also means iCloud Photos is not a separate recovery copy. Apple says items in iCloud Photos are not duplicated in iCloud Backup and advises users to keep backup copies of their library. For independent recovery, export the originals to a computer or external storage drive.

iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings and tap your name at the top to open Apple Account settings.
- Tap iCloud, then Photos.
- Turn on Sync this device.
- Repeat on each iPhone or iPad that should use the library, signing in with the same Apple Account.
Keep the device connected to the internet while the initial upload completes. The time required depends on the size of the library and connection. Check iCloud storage before starting if you have a large collection.

Mac
Enable Photos in iCloud settings for your Apple Account, or open Photos and enable iCloud Photos in the app’s settings. In Photos settings, choose how much of the library to keep locally:
- Download Originals to this Mac keeps full-resolution originals on the Mac as well as in iCloud. This is the better choice when you want a local full-size copy available for export or offline access.
- Optimize Mac Storage saves local space by keeping smaller versions on the Mac when needed while the originals remain in iCloud. The full-resolution file may need to download before you can use or export it.
Access the library from Windows or a browser
Windows PC
Install and sign in to iCloud for Windows with the same Apple Account, then enable iCloud Photos. The photos appear through File Explorer; Apple also documents access through the Microsoft Photos app. A browser alternative is iCloud.com/photos.

Download selected items from iCloud.com
In the Photos section of iCloud.com, select the items to download. Apple’s cited guidance allows up to 1,000 items per download. Depending on the available options, you can choose unmodified originals, highest resolution, or a more compatible JPEG or MP4/H.264 version. Choose unmodified originals when preserving the original file is important; a compatible version may be easier to use with other software but can differ from the original format.
Make a separate copy on a computer or drive
Import directly from an iPhone or iPad with USB
Apple supports importing from an iPhone or iPad to a Mac or PC using a USB cable and the computer’s Photos app or import workflow. If iCloud Photos is enabled, Apple says to download full-resolution originals to the device before importing to a PC. Otherwise, some items may not be present on the device at their original resolution when you try to transfer them.

Export to external storage
For a copy that remains separate from iCloud, export originals from Photos on a Mac to another drive, or export from an iPhone or iPad to external storage. A portable external SSD or other external storage drive is optional; it is not needed to enable iCloud Photos. First estimate the library size, check that the drive has enough usable capacity, and confirm its connector works with your device. After export, verify that the files are present on the drive before relying on it as a backup.
Move a Google Photos library to Apple Photos
Eligible users can request a copy transfer through Google Takeout with Apple’s iCloud Photos destination. This is a migration path, not ongoing synchronization: the transfer does not delete the Google Photos copy. It requires iCloud Photos and iCloud Drive to be enabled, plus enough available iCloud storage. Completion can take several hours to several days.

- Make sure iCloud Photos and iCloud Drive are on for the Apple Account receiving the library.
- Check that the account has enough available iCloud storage for the transfer.
- In Google Takeout, request a transfer of Google Photos to Apple’s iCloud Photos destination and follow the account verification steps.
- When the transfer is complete, check the Photos import album and the iCloud Drive import folder. Some formats, including RAW files, may be placed in iCloud Drive rather than the Photos library.
Check storage and deletion recovery
iCloud Photos uses iCloud storage. Apple lists 5 GB of free storage for a new iCloud signup; storage needs depend on the size of your library, and available plans or amounts can change. Check your account’s actual storage use and available space before syncing a large collection or initiating a transfer.
Deleted photos and videos can be recovered from Recently Deleted for 30 days, according to Apple. After that period, they are permanently deleted. Because a deletion syncs across devices using iCloud Photos, an independent exported copy is the safer recovery option for anything you cannot afford to lose.

Which route should you use?
| Goal | Best-fit route | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Keep an Apple-device library current across devices | Turn on iCloud Photos with the same Apple Account | Edits and deletions sync; this is not an independent backup. |
| Have full-resolution originals locally on a Mac | Choose Download Originals to this Mac | Requires local disk space for the originals. |
| Save device space while using the synced library | Choose Optimize Storage | Smaller local copies may be used; originals remain in iCloud. |
| Copy iPhone or iPad photos to a computer | Import by USB, or access iCloud Photos on Windows or the web | For PC USB import with iCloud Photos enabled, download full-resolution originals to the device first. |
| Keep a recovery copy outside the synced library | Export originals to a computer or external drive | Check capacity and connector compatibility, then verify the export. |
| Move a Google Photos collection to Apple | Request the Google Takeout transfer to iCloud Photos | Requires iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive, and enough storage; check Photos and iCloud Drive for imported items. |
What “any device” does—and does not—cover
Apple documents iCloud Photos access on Apple devices, Windows, and the web, plus a specific Google Photos transfer route. These options do not establish automatic syncing from every camera, phone, or third-party photo service. For other sources, use an export or computer import workflow compatible with that device, then add the files to the Apple Photos library.
