How to Get Your Alienware Monitor Out of Power Save Mode

First, wake the computer by moving the mouse or pressing a key. If the screen stays blank, check whether the monitor is powered on and receiving video: a sleeping computer, a wrong input, a loose cable, and a monitor fault need different fixes. Work through the checks below before changing settings or updating firmware.

Is the monitor asleep, or is there no video signal?

Power Save can mean the monitor has gone to sleep along with the computer, or that the monitor is on but is not receiving a usable video signal. Watch for an on-screen “No Signal” message or equivalent, and check the power indicator; its color and meaning vary by model. If the computer wakes and the picture returns, the monitor was responding to the computer’s sleep state. If the monitor remains on without a picture, continue with the input and cable checks.

Wake the computer and check monitor power

  1. Move the mouse or press a key on the keyboard to wake the computer. Dell recommends this check in its AW2524HF troubleshooting guide.
  2. Confirm that the monitor itself is on and inspect its power indicator. If the light is off, check the monitor’s power connection and power source rather than treating the issue as a video-input problem. Dell notes that indicator behavior varies across models in its monitor troubleshooting guidance.

Check the selected input and video cable

  1. Open the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) using its controls and select the input connected to the computer, such as HDMI or DisplayPort. The correct choice depends on the ports and cable used in your setup.
  2. Reseat the video cable at both the monitor and computer. Check the connectors for visible damage and, if possible, test with a known-good cable. Use a cable and connection supported by both devices; do not assume the monitor and computer use the same ports.

Dell includes input selection and cable checks in its Alienware display troubleshooting steps. A different cable can help isolate a connection problem, but buying one is not a first step if you can test a compatible cable already on hand.

Restart the computer

If waking the computer and checking the connection do not restore the picture, restart the computer. Dell lists restarting as a step for an Alienware monitor that reports no input signal. Save work first if the computer is responsive and you can do so.

Check the model-specific Power Saving setting

Not every Alienware monitor has the same OSD options or sleep behavior, so consult the manual for the exact model before changing this setting. For the AW3420DW, Dell’s manual says Power Saving is On by default, allowing the monitor to sleep as the system sleeps. It also states: “Selecting Off may prevent the monitor from going into deep sleep and being unable to wake up.” The manual also notes that pressing a rear-panel button can wake that model. These instructions are specific to the AW3420DW; do not assume another Alienware display has the same menu or behavior.

Run the monitor’s built-in diagnostics

If the screen remains blank, use the diagnostic procedure in your model’s manual. Dell’s monitor troubleshooting guide describes disconnecting video cables and checking whether the monitor displays a “No Signal” message or similar. Some models also provide a built-in color test. If the monitor can display its test image, that points toward the computer or video connection rather than the monitor panel itself; follow the exact model procedure and interpret its result as described by Dell.

Consider firmware only if Dell lists an update for your model

Firmware is not a general Power Save fix, and Dell does not offer updates for every monitor. Identify the exact model, then check its Drivers & Downloads page for available monitor firmware. If an update applies, follow Dell’s current monitor firmware update instructions. Dell’s manual-install guidance includes disabling sleep and connecting the monitor’s USB upstream cable directly; follow the instructions for the applicable update rather than interrupting or improvising the process.
