Use Windows Update first. If you have an Intel processor and Windows does not offer the needed fix, you can install a matching package from the Microsoft Update Catalog. AMD systems generally use the manufacturer’s BIOS/UEFI or laptop-firmware channel instead. A Windows-loaded revision is not a permanent rewrite of the processor and cannot replace platform firmware when the fix extends beyond CPU microcode.
What a microcode update actually changes
Microcode is processor-internal firmware that changes how a particular CPU family, model and stepping behaves. Updates can address security vulnerabilities, documented errata, stability problems, compatibility issues and CPU behavior required by operating-system mitigations.
It is not a normal CPU driver, a BIOS replacement, a permanent rewrite of the processor, or a conventional performance upgrade. Firmware can load microcode before the operating system starts; on supported systems, Windows can load a signed, compatible revision during boot. Intel describes both approaches in its OS microcode guidance.
Windows loads the revision for that boot rather than changing the motherboard’s SPI flash image. Firmware may load one revision first, with Windows replacing it with a newer compatible revision if one is available. Another operating system, hypervisor or a later boot may follow a different microcode path.

Before you install anything
- Have administrator access.
- Record the exact CPU identity, Windows edition and version, architecture and OS build.
- Use only Windows Update, the Microsoft Update Catalog, your OEM firmware support page, or documented Intel/AMD sources.
- Do not use modified BIOS images, random ZIP files, unsigned drivers or forum-hosted microcode loaders for a normal Windows installation.
Intel treats OS-loaded microcode as security-sensitive material and advises following the operating-system vendor’s installation and integrity-verification procedures (Intel guidance).

reg query HKLMHARDWAREDESCRIPTIONSystemCentralProcessor /v "Update Revision"
Equivalent PowerShell:
Get-ItemProperty `
-Path 'HKLM:HARDWAREDESCRIPTIONSystemCentralProcessor ' `
-Name 'Update Revision'
To display the raw value as hexadecimal:
$path = 'HKLM:HARDWAREDESCRIPTIONSystemCentralProcessor '
$raw = (Get-ItemProperty -Path $path -Name 'Update Revision').'Update Revision'
'0x{0:X}' -f [BitConverter]::ToUInt32($raw, 0)
Some Windows builds also expose Previous Update Revision. That field is commonly associated with an earlier or firmware-provided revision, while Update Revision is the revision Windows loaded, but fields and interpretations are not identical across every build and diagnostic utility. Compare the post-reboot registry value with a trusted hardware utility and the processor-specific vendor information.
3. Install through Windows Update first
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install applicable quality, cumulative and optional firmware-related updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Run the revision check again after Windows has restarted.
Labels vary by edition and servicing channel, so use the current Windows Update page rather than relying on an old screenshot. Microsoft documents Intel microcode distribution through Windows Update, WSUS and the Catalog in KB4073757.
Windows 10 and Windows Server
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install applicable updates and restart.
Availability depends on the Windows version, servicing status, processor and update channel. Microsoft’s standalone Intel package model is described in KB4100347.
4. Install an Intel package manually from the Update Catalog
Use the Catalog when Windows Update does not offer the package, the computer is offline, an administrator needs a standalone .msu, or organizational policy requires controlled deployment.

- Record the CPU manufacturer, exact model, Windows version, architecture (normally x64) and current OS build.
- Open the Microsoft Update Catalog.
- Search for
Intel microcode, an applicable KB number, and your Windows version or architecture. - Read the package description, applicability and supersedence information.
- Download only the package matching your Windows edition, version, architecture and supported CPU coverage.
- Install it, restart, and check the revision again.
Microsoft explains Catalog download and administrative deployment through its WSUS and Catalog documentation.
Install from the command line
wusa.exe C:PathToUpdate.msu
For a quiet installation with an automatic restart option:
wusa.exe C:PathToUpdate.msu /quiet /norestart
Do not install an arbitrary file merely because its title contains “microcode.” Applicability depends on Windows version, architecture, CPU support, package supersedence and prerequisites. A package may contain updates for several processor identifiers; the revision only changes if your CPU is covered and the package is newer.
5. Intel and AMD use different practical paths
Intel
Intel systems may receive microcode through BIOS/UEFI, Windows Update, the Microsoft Update Catalog, WSUS or enterprise management. Intel recommends manufacturer firmware where possible because it loads earlier and can include related platform changes (Intel Microcode Update Guidance).

- NEXT-LEVEL THERMAL PERFORMANCE: MX-7 features a performance-optimized, dense, and highly viscous consistency. Its high filler content ensures exceptional heat transfer
- LONG-TERM STABILITY: High cohesion prevents pump-out, dry-out, or bleeding even under repeated thermal cycles, ensuring long-lasting and consistent performance without the need for frequent reapplication
- PERFECT APPLICATION: MX-7 cannot be spread manually by design. Its low adhesion allows the paste to distribute naturally under cooler pressure, forming a thin bond line without trapping air bubbles
- SAFE FOR ALL DEVICES: MX-7 is electrically non-conductive and non-capacitive, making it completely safe for CPUs, GPUs, laptops, consoles, and other, no risk of short circuits or electrical discharge
- INCLUDES MX CLEANER: Thoroughly removes old thermal paste and prepares contact surfaces for optimal performance before applying new thermal compound.
AMD
Do not assume Intel’s Catalog workflow has a generic AMD equivalent. Microsoft’s public guidance generally directs AMD users to motherboard, laptop or OEM firmware. A Windows cumulative update may include AMD-related components or mitigations, but that is not the same as a universal standalone AMD microcode download. Check the system manufacturer’s support page and release notes (Microsoft KB4073757).
6. Determine whether the installed revision is actually newer
Compare all of these for the same CPU and platform:
- The active Windows revision after reboot.
- The revision described by the applicable Microsoft package.
- Intel’s information for the matching family, model and stepping.
- The BIOS/UEFI or hardware diagnostic revision.
A higher hexadecimal value often represents a newer revision, but numbering is vendor-specific and a later-looking value may not apply to your exact CPUID. Microsoft’s package may lag an OEM or Intel firmware release, and a CPU can have a newer BIOS revision without any Windows-distributed package.

- Confirm that the package covers the CPU’s CPUID.
- Check whether firmware already supplies the same or newer revision.
- Compare the exact field reported by your security or hardware utility.
- Rule out a virtual machine, where the guest normally cannot control host microcode.
Managed computers and virtual machines
Business systems should use WSUS, Configuration Manager, Intune or the organization’s approved workflow. A Windows guest normally cannot update the physical host CPU; update the host firmware, host operating system and hypervisor instead.
When a BIOS/UEFI update is still required
Windows microcode is not a complete substitute for platform firmware. A BIOS update can bundle CPU initialization, Intel microcode or AMD AGESA, memory-training, power-management, Intel Management Engine, PCIe compatibility, boot-chain, voltage or thermal-safeguard changes. Intel security advisories, including INTEL-SA-01396, commonly direct users to the latest manufacturer firmware.
This matters especially for Intel 13th- and 14th-generation desktop systems, where stability and voltage behavior may depend on BIOS settings and other platform components in addition to microcode. If the vendor advisory requires firmware, or Windows has no applicable package, use the OEM’s documented BIOS/UEFI procedure.

What happens after reboot—and on another operating system
A restart is required before a newly installed Windows package can be verified. The package does not permanently rewrite factory CPU state. Firmware microcode is available from the earliest platform initialization; OS-loaded microcode is applied during the Windows boot process. If you dual-boot, Linux, another Windows installation or a hypervisor may load its own package. Updating Windows does not update Linux microcode files, hypervisor policy or the BIOS.
