Use response.getCode() with Apache HttpClient 5.x. With HttpClient 4.x, use response.getStatusLine().getStatusCode(). The correct method depends on the major version your project uses.
Get the status code with HttpClient 5.x
In the classic API, inspect the response passed to the execution handler. This example prints the status code and consumes the response entity:
try (CloseableHttpClient client = HttpClients.createDefault()) {
ClassicHttpRequest request = ClassicRequestBuilder.get("https://example.com").build();
client.execute(request, response -> {
int statusCode = response.getCode();
System.out.println(statusCode);
// Process or consume the response entity as needed.
EntityUtils.consume(response.getEntity());
return null;
});
}
The key call is response.getCode(), which returns an int. See the HttpClient quick start and the 5.6 CloseableHttpResponse API.
Include the relevant HttpClient imports and dependency for your project. The example uses the classic API; keep the response handling inside the execution scope. The handler form manages closing the response after the handler returns.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Get the status code with HttpClient 4.x
For HttpClient 4.x, get the status line from the response and then read its code:
try (CloseableHttpClient client = HttpClients.createDefault()) {
HttpGet request = new HttpGet("https://example.com");
try (CloseableHttpResponse response = client.execute(request)) {
int statusCode = response.getStatusLine().getStatusCode();
System.out.println(statusCode);
}
}
This form explicitly closes the returned response with try-with-resources. Apache demonstrates the status-code call in its HttpClient 4.5 tutorial.

Choose the method for your HttpClient version
| Version | Status-code expression | Response context |
|---|---|---|
| HttpClient 4.x | response.getStatusLine().getStatusCode() |
Read the code from the response status line. |
| HttpClient 5.x | response.getCode() |
Read the code directly from the response. |
This is a major-version API change, not two interchangeable spellings. Apache’s migration guide states: “HTTP response messages in HttpClient 5.x no longer have a status line. Use response code directly.” Check your build dependency and imports before copying a snippet.
Handle response resources correctly
When using a response-returning execution method, close the response explicitly, as in the 4.x example. In the 5.x handler pattern, the client closes the response after the handler returns. Consume or otherwise handle the entity before leaving the response scope when appropriate; an unconsumed entity can prevent safe connection reuse, and the connection may be discarded. The HttpClient quick start explains the response and entity lifecycle.

Troubleshoot common mistakes
- “Cannot find symbol” for
getCode(): Check whether the project uses HttpClient 4.x. UsegetStatusLine().getStatusCode()for that major version, or migrate the dependency and code together. - “Cannot find symbol” for
getStatusLine(): Check whether the project uses HttpClient 5.x. Its response API exposes the status directly withgetCode(). - The status code is read from the wrong object: Execute the request and inspect the response object, or the response-handler argument. The request itself does not contain the server’s response code.
- Connections are not being reused as expected: Ensure the response is closed when returned directly and that its entity is consumed or handled. Do not let response content remain unmanaged.
- Code compiles against a different version than expected: Inspect the resolved dependency and imports, including transitive dependencies. Match the method to the actual HttpClient major version rather than relying on a copied example.
Should an existing HttpClient 4.x project migrate?
Apache says HttpClient 4.5.x receives fixes for major defects and security issues and encourages 4.x users to migrate to 5.x. That is project-level guidance, not a reason to paste a 5.x method into a 4.x project: keep code aligned with the dependency unless you are deliberately undertaking a migration. See the Apache HttpComponents project status.
Or skip the browser setup
This Java example makes an HTTP request and reads its response status code. If your actual goal is to capture a webpage as an image or PDF, ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server for developers; it is not a replacement for Apache HttpClient’s status-code API. One GET request can return a screenshot or PDF:
