The best spatial-audio setup is a compatibility check, not a single switch: play a track or film that is actually mixed for Dolby Atmos or another supported multichannel format, enable that format in the app, confirm that your phone and TWS earbuds support the mode you want, and then compare fixed spatial audio with head tracking when both are available.
Ordinary stereo earbuds can reproduce a spatialized signal in supported playback paths. Head-tracked audio is different: the phone, operating system, app and earbuds must all support dynamic spatial audio. Use the same known-supported scene or song for every comparison, because a “spatial audio” badge does not guarantee the same feature on every platform.

What spatial audio actually does
Spatial audio describes several related functions. A creator-authored Dolby Atmos or other multichannel mix contains positional information that a compatible player renders over headphones. A spatializer can also process multichannel material into a headphone presentation. Head tracking adds another layer: sensors estimate how your head moves and the system changes the rendered signal so that voices or instruments appear anchored in space.
Those functions should not be treated as interchangeable. Static (or fixed) spatial audio keeps the spatial presentation in place without changing the apparent sound position as you turn your head. Dynamic spatial audio uses head-tracking data. Android’s audio documentation explicitly separates the two: static spatial audio does not require special headset functionality, while dynamic playback requires a headset and platform that support tracking. An ordinary stereo recording does not become a creator-authored Atmos mix merely because a spatial effect is enabled.

The practical result is a chain of dependencies:
- Phone and operating system: the device must expose the required spatializer and, for dynamic playback, head-tracking support.
- Earbuds: the connected model must advertise the capabilities the platform expects.
- App and title: the service must deliver a supported Atmos, multichannel or spatial stream, and the particular song or programme must have that mix.
- User settings: a disabled format, incompatible download setting or unsupported subscription can remove the option even when the hardware is capable.
Android’s spatial-audio APIs check the current phone, connected headset and user settings rather than assuming that every Bluetooth connection is equivalent. That is why a feature shown for one phone-and-earbud combination may be absent on another.
Start with content that can demonstrate the feature
Music: look for the format indicator
In Apple Music, available Dolby Atmos tracks are marked with an Atmos icon, and the icon appears on the Now Playing screen while an Atmos version is playing. Apple notes that catalogue availability varies by country or region, so the same album may not expose Atmos everywhere. An ordinary stereo version will continue to play as stereo even if a spatial setting is switched on.
Dolby’s music FAQ lists Apple Music, Amazon Music Unlimited and TIDAL HiFi as services that offer Dolby Atmos music. Treat that list as a starting point: confirm the current catalogue, app support, subscription tier and regional availability inside your service before choosing a track for a test. The Dolby reference is available at Dolby’s “How to experience music in Dolby Atmos” FAQ.
Video: use a supported film or programme
Google’s Pixel Buds guide says spatial audio is particularly suited to movies and television and gives HBO Max and Netflix Premium as examples where a listener can try it, subject to the applicable subscription. These examples are not a universal catalogue. The title, app, plan, region and connected device still determine whether an immersive stream is delivered.
A simple content check
- Choose a song or scene whose app displays an Atmos or spatial indicator.
- Start playback and verify that the indicator remains visible on the Now Playing or playback screen.
- Keep that exact title running while you switch spatial audio off, fixed, and head tracked. Changing songs or scenes during the comparison makes it difficult to tell whether a difference came from the mode or the mix.
Set up Dolby Atmos on an iPhone
Apple’s current iPhone instructions provide separate controls for the music format and for the Spatial Audio listening mode. Follow this order so that a mode test is not confused with a catalogue limitation.
- Open Settings > Apps > Music > Dolby Atmos.
- Choose Automatic if you want Music to play Atmos when connected to headphones Apple identifies as compatible, such as AirPods 3 or AirPods Pro, or to a compatible Atmos speaker or receiver.
- Choose Always On if you want Music to attempt Atmos playback with any connected headphones. “Always On” is an instruction to attempt the format, not a guarantee that every song has an Atmos mix.
- Turn on Download in Dolby Atmos if you want downloaded tracks to use the Atmos version when one is available.
- Play a title with the Atmos badge and confirm the badge on the Now Playing screen.
Apple documents these controls in Play music in Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos on iPhone. If the icon is missing, check the title and region before changing hardware; the setting cannot create an Atmos master that the service does not provide.

Choose fixed or head-tracked Spatial Audio
What the two modes mean
| Mode | What changes | Often useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Off | Normal headphone rendering for the selected track or programme. | You want a baseline for comparison or prefer conventional stereo. |
| Fixed | A spatial presentation is active, but the apparent sound position does not follow your head movement. | You want an immersive presentation with a stable image, especially for music. |
| Head Tracked | The system follows head movement and adjusts the rendered signal so the presentation appears anchored as you move. | You prefer a speaker-like anchor or a more room-like effect for films and television. |
These descriptions explain behaviour, not a guaranteed improvement in fidelity. A listener may prefer fixed mode, head tracking, or no processing depending on the recording and personal taste.
Apple’s control path
With compatible AirPods in your ears, open Control Center, press and hold the volume control, tap Spatial Audio, and select Fixed or Head Tracked. Apple saves the selected mode and applies it the next time you use that app. If the Spatial Audio control is not present, the connected earbuds, phone software or current playback path may not support it.
Set up spatial audio on Android
Understand the Android compatibility check
Android’s spatializer implementation lets an app discover whether the current device, connected headset and user settings support immersive multichannel playback. Static spatial audio does not require special headset functionality. Dynamic playback does: the earbuds must provide head-tracking capability and the phone must support the corresponding implementation.
“Static spatial audio doesn’t require head tracking, so specific functionality isn’t required in the headset.” — Android Open Source Project, Implementation of high-quality spatial audio and head tracking, last updated 2026-07-13 UTC.
On a non-Pixel Android phone, open the connected Bluetooth device’s settings and look for spatial-audio or head-tracking controls. The label and location vary by manufacturer and Android build. If no control appears, that absence is a compatibility signal, not an instruction to enable a hidden universal switch.

- Pair the earbuds with the compatible Pixel phone.
- Open Settings > Connected devices.
- Open the settings for the paired Pixel Buds.
- Tap Sound.
- Turn on Spatial Audio and then Head tracking.
- Play a supported movie, programme or track and compare the available modes.
On other Android phones, the Pixel Buds app exposes corresponding Sound controls, but the full feature still depends on the exact phone, operating system, earbuds and playback app. Google’s step-by-step reference is Use Spatial Audio and head tracking.
Run a controlled listening comparison
Spatial effects can sound different because of the mix, volume, fit or expectation. A short, repeatable comparison gives you a more useful answer than a “best” label.
- Use one supported title. Select a song with an Atmos icon or a film programme known to expose the spatial option in your app.
- Set a comfortable volume. Keep the level unchanged while switching modes; louder playback can be mistaken for better detail.
- Listen with spatial audio off. Note where vocals, dialogue and prominent effects appear in the normal headphone presentation.
- Try fixed spatial audio. Keep your head still first, then move naturally. The presentation should remain spatial without deliberately following those movements.
- Try head tracking. Turn your head slowly left and right, then return to centre. A supported dynamic system should adjust the apparent position as you move.
- Repeat a difficult passage. Use dialogue, a centred vocal, or a sound that crosses the front of a film scene rather than judging from a few seconds of ambience.
- Choose by preference. Keep the mode that sounds most natural and comfortable to you. Official platform controls establish what the modes do; they do not establish that one mode is universally higher quality.
Troubleshoot the problems people encounter most
No Atmos or spatial indicator appears
- Confirm that the particular song, album or programme has an Atmos or spatial version.
- Check the service’s subscription requirement and country or region. Availability can differ even when the app is identical.
- On iPhone, verify Settings > Apps > Music > Dolby Atmos and then look for the icon on the Now Playing screen.
- On video services, confirm that the title and playback plan support the format; the app may still play a normal version when the immersive stream is unavailable.
Fixed works but head tracking is missing
That behaviour is consistent with a static-only path or an incomplete compatibility chain. Check the exact phone model, operating-system version, earbud model and Bluetooth device settings. Android’s APIs evaluate those components together, and a headset that can reproduce spatial audio does not necessarily provide dynamic tracking.
Recommended Free Tools
The setting is present but the effect is not obvious
- Use a verified Atmos or multichannel title rather than an ordinary stereo recording.
- Keep the same title running while changing modes.
- Check that both earbuds are connected and seated consistently; a change in seal or channel balance can dominate a subtle spatial difference.
- Do not infer failure from a track that has no Atmos mix. “Always On” on iPhone attempts playback but cannot supply an unavailable master.
Head-tracked audio seems to move too much
Movement is the defining behaviour of dynamic mode. Try fixed mode with the same title if you prefer a stable image, or turn spatial audio off for conventional stereo. Head tracking is a choice, not a requirement for listening to Atmos content.
Downloaded music is not using Atmos
On iPhone, enable Download in Dolby Atmos in the Music settings and verify the title has an Atmos version. Downloads made when the format was unavailable may not represent the same version as a newly eligible download; check the title’s current indicator rather than assuming every offline copy is Atmos.

Fit, comfort and replacement tips
A stable, comfortable seal helps you hear any headphone presentation consistently, but the available documentation does not establish that changing ear tips enables spatial audio or improves its rendering algorithm. If you replace tips, match them to the exact earbud model, confirm that the charging case still closes correctly, and choose the size that remains comfortable for long listening. Treat tips as a fit and comfort accessory, not as a spatial-audio upgrade.
Fit also matters to your comparison method. Use the same tip size and insertion depth for off, fixed and head-tracked tests. If one mode is tested after an earbud has loosened, a bass or channel-balance change can be mistaken for a change in spatial processing.
What the Android latency figure means
The Android Open Source Project specifies a maximum head-tracking latency of 150 milliseconds for its implementation. The figure is defined as the time from captured head motion to the transducer detecting the resulting sound change. It is an implementation requirement, not a measured result for every retail earbud, phone or app. A product listing that mentions “head tracking” therefore does not, by itself, prove that it meets that exact timing in your setup.
The same Android documentation is useful for understanding why dynamic audio is more demanding than fixed spatialization: tracking data, the phone’s spatializer, the connected headset and user settings must all work together. If any link is unsupported, a static mode may remain available while head tracking disappears.

Quick Recap
A quick decision checklist
- Already own compatible earbuds? Test a marked Atmos or spatial title before spending money.
- Use an iPhone? Set Music to Automatic or Always On as appropriate, enable Dolby Atmos downloads if needed, and use Control Center to compare Fixed and Head Tracked.
- Use a Pixel? Confirm the Pixel 6-generation-or-newer requirement, pair Pixel Buds Pro or Pro 2, and enable Spatial Audio and Head tracking under the paired-device Sound settings.
- Use another Android phone? Look for spatial-audio and head-tracking controls in the connected Bluetooth device settings and verify support for your exact model combination.
- Hear no difference? Recheck the title, subscription, region, app and mode before blaming the earbuds.
- Prefer a stable image? Use fixed spatial audio. Want the presentation to follow movement? Use head tracking when the complete chain supports it.
