The best HDB 630 sound comes from four checks in order: install and update Sennheiser Smart Control Plus, get the earcups seated correctly, choose the connection that fits your source, and verify the codec and sample rate actually reaching the headphones. Then make small parametric-EQ or crossfeed changes for your hearing and the recording. A hi-res file, USB dongle, or premium cable cannot override the source, app, device, or output settings.
Start with the setup that has the biggest audible effect
Before changing codecs or chasing a particular file format, make the HDB 630 physically and digitally ready. Sennheiser’s instruction manual links correct headband adjustment with both sound quality and wearing comfort. The headphones also use onboard digital processing for their features, so several modes require the headset to be switched on.

- Install the current app. Pair the HDB 630 with a phone and install Sennheiser Smart Control Plus. Use this app rather than assuming the older Smart Control app supports this model.
- Update firmware. In Smart Control Plus, open Settings > Firmware and install any offered update. Keep the headphones and phone close together until the process finishes.
- Adjust the headband. Extend or shorten it until both earcups surround your ears without gaps, excessive pressure, or a loose seal. Recheck the fit whenever you change glasses, hair, or listening position.
- Choose one signal path deliberately. Use ordinary Bluetooth for convenience, the included BTD 700 for Sennheiser’s high-resolution wireless route, USB-C for wired digital audio, or the included 3.5 mm cable for an analog source.
- Confirm routing. Select the HDB 630 or BTD 700 in the phone, computer, or playback app’s output menu. If audio is still coming from speakers or another headset, the headphones may be paired correctly but not selected for playback.
- Verify rather than assume. In Smart Control Plus, open Settings > Signal Path. Check the reported codec and sampling rate while audio is playing.
- Tune only after the path works. Make modest parametric-EQ changes, try crossfeed when the recording calls for it, and select noise-control settings appropriate to your environment.
Choose the connection according to your source and priorities
No connection is universally “best.” The useful decision is whether you value convenience, a verified high-resolution path, a computer’s wired stability, or compatibility with an analog output.

| Bluetooth directly from a phone, tablet, or computer | You want the simplest wireless listening. | Check the device’s available codec and the playback app’s output selection. | The codec depends on the source device and operating system. A Bluetooth connection does not automatically mean high-resolution playback. |
| Included BTD 700 | You have a compatible USB-C source and want Sennheiser’s high-resolution wireless route. | Pair the dongle with the HDB 630, select BTD 700 as the system output, enable High Resolution in Smart Control Plus, and inspect Signal Path. | High-resolution aptX Adaptive mode uses more battery than standard-resolution operation. The source still determines the maximum signal rate. |
| USB-C audio | You are listening from a compatible phone or computer and prefer a wired digital connection. | On Windows or macOS, inspect the system’s audio format and manually choose the desired sample rate when the operating system does not select it. | The HDB 630 is capable of up to 24-bit/96-kHz USB audio, but the actual source, application, and system setting remain decisive. |
| 3.5 mm analog cable | Your source has a compatible analog headphone output or you need the included cable. | Connect the included cable and switch the headphones on. | Sennheiser says the DSP-equipped HDB 630 operates only while switched on, even with analog input. |
Set up high-resolution wireless correctly
Pair the BTD 700 and select it as the output
The BTD 700 is included with the HDB 630. Insert it into a compatible USB-C source, put the headphones into pairing mode as directed by the manual, and complete pairing. A computer or phone can recognize the dongle without automatically routing all sound to it, so open the operating system’s sound controls and choose BTD 700 when necessary. Also check the individual music, video, or casting app if it has its own output selector.

Enable High Resolution in Smart Control Plus
Open Settings > Audio Mode Priority > High Resolution. The manual directs you to power-cycle the headphones after changing this setting; turn them off and back on before judging the result. High Resolution is not the default for the BTD 700 route because standard mode preserves more runtime.
Read the Signal Path display
With music playing, open Settings > Signal Path in Smart Control Plus. Use the display to confirm the active codec and sampling rate instead of inferring them from a file label, a streaming subscription, or the presence of the dongle. If the display reports a lower rate, find the limiting stage: the original file, the streaming app, the phone or computer output, or the selected Bluetooth mode.
Bluetooth does not up-sample a lower-rate source. A 44.1-kHz track remains limited by that source even when the wireless path can carry a higher rate. Conversely, a 96-kHz file may be delivered at a lower rate if the app, operating system, or device chooses a different output format.

Sennheiser quotes up to 60 hours at standard resolution and up to 45 hours with aptX Adaptive 24-bit/96-kHz through the BTD 700. These are manufacturer maximums, not independent test measurements; real runtime changes with volume, ANC, temperature, connection behavior, and use of other features. Choose standard mode for long trips when the additional resolution is not important to the material you are hearing.

Use USB-C audio without losing the source’s intended format
USB-C is the most direct wired digital route for a compatible phone or computer. Connect the included 1.20 m USB-C-to-USB-C cable, then select the HDB 630 as the computer’s playback device. On Windows and Mac, the system may default to a format that is lower than the content or may keep one rate for every application. Open the operating system’s sound-device format controls and manually select up to 24-bit/96-kHz when that is supported by the source and your application.
Do not treat a 24-bit/96-kHz setting as proof that every track is being delivered at that rate. The setting describes the output format presented by the system; the music service, browser, player, or casting path can still provide a lower-rate stream. Smart Control Plus’s Signal Path display is the practical check for what the headphones receive.
If a USB-C phone does not produce sound, confirm that the cable is connected at both ends, that the HDB 630 is powered on, and that the phone has selected USB audio rather than its built-in speaker. Some devices require you to reconnect the cable after changing the output menu.

Use the 3.5 mm input with the required power state
The included 1.20 m 3.5 mm audio cable works with a compatible analog source. Insert the cable fully at both ends, select the source’s headphone output, and switch the HDB 630 on. Sennheiser specifically states that the headphones must be switched on for analog operation because their DSP is part of the signal path. If you hear silence from an otherwise working analog source, the power state and the source’s own volume/output selection are the first checks.

For an older iPhone with a Lightning port, Sennheiser says the BTD 700 works with iOS devices that have USB-C. A Lightning-port iPhone needs a compatible USB-C-to-Lightning adapter that supports audio; Sennheiser recommends an MFi-certified adapter. This is a conditional compatibility requirement, not a guarantee that every adapter will pass audio.
Shape the sound with EQ and crossfeed
Make small parametric-EQ changes
Smart Control Plus provides a parametric equalizer. Start from a flat or lightly adjusted profile and change one area at a time. A small low-frequency lift can add weight to thin recordings; a narrow reduction in the bass can reduce boom; a modest presence adjustment can clarify vocals; and a restrained high-frequency change can soften brightness. Use cuts before large boosts when possible, and lower the overall level if a boost makes the signal clip or forces you to listen louder.
Judge each change with familiar tracks at the same approximate loudness. Louder often sounds “better” for a few seconds even when the tonal balance is not. Save a profile only after listening across several genres and recordings. Sennheiser says EQ settings are stored on the headphones, so the selected tuning remains active when the app is not open.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use crossfeed for hard-panned recordings
Crossfeed offers Off, Low, and High settings. It blends a small amount of each channel into the other, which can make older recordings with instruments isolated almost entirely to the left or right feel less extreme. Try Off first, then Low, and use High only when it makes a particular recording more natural to you. There is no objectively correct setting for every album; modern mixes may sound less open or less separated with crossfeed enabled.

- Want everything, just no compromise? High-definition, neutral sound, ultra-long life battery, active noise reduction that works perfectly - and all of this, of course, wireless? Then you'll love the closed HDB 630. With the included BTD 700 Bluetooth USB C adapter, you can enjoy high-quality audioblanket sound wherever you are.
Choose ANC and transparency for the room, not as a guaranteed fidelity upgrade
Smart Control Plus offers manual, adaptive, and off ANC settings, along with transparency control. Use ANC when outside noise is masking detail, adaptive ANC when conditions change, and transparency when you need awareness of speech or traffic. These controls change the listening environment and can alter your perception of bass, detail, and volume, but they should not be described as improving fidelity in every setting.
When comparing an EQ or crossfeed change, keep the noise-control mode constant. Otherwise you may attribute a change in perceived detail to EQ when it actually came from a quieter room or a different transparency mix.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify the complete playback chain
High-resolution playback is a chain, not a badge attached to a file. Check each link in this order:
- Content: Confirm the track itself is available at the claimed resolution. A high-resolution subscription does not make every recording high resolution.
- Application: Check whether the player, browser, or casting app resamples audio, applies volume leveling, or has its own output-device setting.
- Operating system: On Windows or Mac, inspect the selected output format. On mobile devices, verify that the external USB device or BTD 700 is selected.
- Connection: For the BTD 700 route, confirm the dongle is paired with the HDB 630 rather than another headset. For USB-C, verify that the cable and port support audio.
- Headphones: Read Smart Control Plus > Settings > Signal Path while the track is playing. Record the codec and sampling rate before changing settings so you can tell which action had an effect.
Sennheiser notes that sound quality and volume leveling can depend on the application and device. Two sources playing the same nominal file can therefore sound different without a fault in the headphones.

Troubleshoot the most common problems
The app cannot find the HDB 630
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled and the headphones are powered on.
- Move the phone close to the headphones and close other audio apps that may be holding the connection.
- Install Smart Control Plus, not an assumed older app, then retry pairing.
- Once connected, open Settings > Firmware and install available updates.
The BTD 700 is connected but audio comes from the speakers
Open the phone or computer sound menu and select BTD 700 as the output. Then check the playback app’s own output selector. Pairing establishes a connection; it does not always change the active output device.
Signal Path does not show high resolution
- Check that the source is compatible with the BTD 700 and that the dongle is the active output.
- Open Settings > Audio Mode Priority > High Resolution in Smart Control Plus.
- Power-cycle the headphones as directed by the manual.
- Play a known track, then inspect Settings > Signal Path.
- If the rate is still lower, inspect the source file, app output, and operating-system format. The headphones cannot restore information removed upstream.
USB-C audio is present but the rate is lower than expected
Open the Windows or Mac sound-device format panel and select the intended rate, up to the HDB 630’s 24-bit/96-kHz capability. Check the player’s exclusive-mode or resampling options if it has them, then verify the result in Signal Path. A system setting alone cannot turn a lower-rate stream into native high-resolution content.
The analog cable produces no sound
- Switch the HDB 630 on; analog input still requires power for its DSP.
- Push the 3.5 mm plugs fully into the source and headphones.
- Select the source’s headphone output and raise its volume gradually.
- Try the cable with another compatible source to separate a source-output problem from a headphone problem.
The headphones sound thin, boomy, or uneven
Re-seat the earcups and adjust the headband before changing EQ. A poor seal can change bass more dramatically than a small equalizer move. Once the fit is secure, bypass crossfeed, return EQ to a neutral profile, and make one small parametric adjustment at a time.

Compare your use with Sennheiser’s quoted maximums rather than treating them as a guaranteed runtime. High-resolution BTD 700 mode, louder playback, ANC, and changing wireless conditions all consume energy. Standard-resolution mode is the appropriate choice when runtime matters more than the high-resolution route.
Know the HDB 630’s published capabilities and included equipment
| Specification or item | Published detail | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Digital audio capability | Up to 24-bit/96-kHz via USB-C, analog input, or BTD 700, according to Sennheiser’s specifications. | This is a product capability, not proof that every source or recording is delivered at 24-bit/96-kHz. Analog sources do not carry a digital sample rate themselves. |
| Bluetooth | Bluetooth 5.2; aptX Adaptive, aptX HD, aptX, AAC, and SBC. | The active codec is negotiated by the source device and connection, then can be checked in Signal Path. |
| Weight | 311 g without cable. | Fit and headband adjustment matter for comfort during long sessions. |
| Included equipment | HDB 630 headphones, BTD 700 Bluetooth USB-C dongle, 1.20 m USB-C-to-USB-C cable, 1.20 m 3.5 mm audio cable, in-flight adapter, and carrying case. | You do not need to purchase the dongle or either listed cable separately when the package is complete. |
The weight and codec figures are Sennheiser specifications, and the runtime figures above are manufacturer-reported maxima. The cited product materials do not provide an independent test dataset for this setup advice. Firmware, app behavior, compatibility, and package contents can change, so check current Sennheiser support and your device’s settings if a menu differs from these paths.
Protect your hearing while optimizing detail
Sennheiser’s manual warns: “Listening at high volume levels can lead to permanent hearing defects.” Set the volume low before putting on the headphones and avoid continuous exposure to high levels, as the manual instructs. If you find yourself raising the volume to overcome outside noise, improve the fit or use an appropriate ANC mode instead of continuing to increase level. No universal numeric “safe” setting is supplied here, so use the manual’s low-volume guidance and take regular breaks.
A practical final check before serious listening
With the headband adjusted, start a familiar track at a comfortable level. Confirm the intended output device, read the codec and sampling rate in Signal Path, and listen first with neutral EQ and crossfeed off. Then make one small EQ change or enable Low crossfeed only if the recording benefits. For travel, select the connection that your source handles reliably; for critical comparison, keep the source, output route, noise-control mode, and volume consistent. This sequence removes the common causes of disappointing sound without assuming that a higher number or a different mode is automatically better.
