How to Get the Best Sound from Wired Earbuds on a Phone Without a Headphone Jack

You can keep using wired earbuds after a phone drops its 3.5 mm jack, but the right connection depends on the phone’s port and audio implementation. Use a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter for a USB-C phone, or a Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter for a Lightning iPhone. On USB-C phones, confirm that the model supports USB-C digital audio and, where required, choose an adapter with a built-in DAC. Then seat the connector fully, select the wired accessory as the output, set a sensible volume, and make listening adjustments with fit and modest EQ rather than assuming an expensive dongle automatically sounds better.

Compatibility and sound preference are separate questions. Official Apple, Samsung and Google guidance explains how to make the connection work, but the cited material does not establish a universal fidelity gain from a premium adapter, a particular DAC, or one EQ preset across all phones and earbuds.

Start with the phone’s port

A “headphone adapter” is not a universal part. USB-C and Lightning are different connectors, and a dongle made for one cannot be substituted for the other. Look at the port on the phone itself before buying anything.

USB-C phones

For a phone with USB-C, you have two practical wired paths:

#1 Best Overall
Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
  • Use your existing 3.5 mm earbuds through a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter.
  • Use USB-C earbuds that carry digital audio directly through the phone’s USB-C port.

The USB-C logo and shape do not prove that every audio accessory will work. Google’s Pixel guidance says to make sure the device uses USB-C digital audio, and some phones require audio through the USB-C port to be enabled in sound settings. Check the support page or specifications for the exact phone model, not just the connector type.

Lightning iPhones

A Lightning iPhone needs a Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter for conventional wired earbuds with a 3.5 mm plug. Apple documents that adapter path for Lightning devices. A USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter is not the interchangeable option for a Lightning port.

Choose the connection that fits your hardware

Option For whom Check before buying Trade-off
USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter with DAC People with 3.5 mm earbuds and a USB-C phone that supports USB-C digital audio Exact phone support, DAC inclusion, microphone and remote behavior Keeps existing earbuds but adds a separate dongle
USB-C earbuds with digital audio USB-C phone users who want a direct wired connection Phone support for USB-C digital audio, device settings and call support No 3.5 mm adapter, but your existing earbuds may need to be replaced or supplemented
Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter Lightning iPhone users with 3.5 mm earbuds Lightning connector and device compatibility Specific to Lightning devices and not a USB-C adapter
USB-C-to-USB-C charging/audio accessory or multiport adapter Listeners who need to charge while using wired audio Phone and adapter support for simultaneous audio and charging More connection complexity; the cited guidance does not establish one universally compatible setup

The first option is usually the most direct way to retain good earbuds. It is not automatically the best-sounding option in every combination, however: the adapter must be electrically and digitally compatible with the phone.

Why a DAC may be required on USB-C

With a 3.5 mm plug, the earbuds receive an analog signal. A USB-C phone normally handles audio as digital data, so a conversion stage is needed before that signal can drive conventional analog earbuds. In a USB-C-to-3.5 mm dongle, that conversion is performed by a DAC (digital-to-analog converter) when the adapter is designed for digital audio.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Samsung’s support guidance for the Galaxy devices covered by its page says a USB-C-to-3.5 mm headset adapter with a built-in DAC is required. It also tells buyers to verify DAC compatibility when choosing a third-party adapter. Samsung UK’s page was updated 12 August 2026; that date describes the support-page update, not an audio-quality measurement.

Do not infer compatibility from the presence of a USB-C plug alone. The USB Implementers Forum Type-C specification includes an Audio Adapter Accessory Mode, but the existence of that standards feature does not mean every phone implements analog audio in the same way. A phone may expect digital audio from the accessory, may require an adapter-side DAC, or may not support the particular mode at all. The exact handset documentation is decisive.

Set up 3.5 mm earbuds on a USB-C phone

  1. Identify the phone model and port. Confirm that it is USB-C and find the manufacturer’s specifications or support instructions for USB-C audio.
  2. Confirm digital-audio support. Look for wording that the phone supports USB-C digital audio. If the instructions mention enabling audio through USB-C in sound settings, turn that option on.
  3. Choose the right adapter type. For Samsung Galaxy models covered by Samsung’s guidance, select a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter with a built-in DAC. For any other brand, verify the model’s requirements rather than assuming that every passive adapter works.
  4. Insert the 3.5 mm plug completely. Push the earbud plug into the adapter until it is fully seated. A partially inserted plug can produce silence, one-sided sound or intermittent contact.
  5. Connect the USB-C end firmly. Insert the adapter into the phone’s USB-C port without forcing it. Remove a thick case temporarily if it prevents the connector from seating.
  6. Start playback and check the output. Play a known track, open the phone’s output or media controls if necessary, and confirm that audio is routed to the wired accessory rather than a speaker or another connected device.
  7. Set media volume gradually. Raise the phone’s media volume to a comfortable level. If the earbuds are already loud, lower the level before pressing play.
  8. Test the functions you actually need. Check both earbuds, the inline buttons, the microphone and a phone call. Basic music playback can work even when call or control functions are not supported by a particular phone and adapter combination.

Set up 3.5 mm earbuds on a Lightning iPhone

  1. Use a Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter. This is the documented path for Lightning iPhones and conventional 3.5 mm earbuds.
  2. Connect the earbuds to the adapter first. Insert the 3.5 mm plug fully so the contacts are engaged.
  3. Connect the Lightning end to the iPhone. Make sure the connector is not blocked by a case or debris.
  4. Play audio and adjust volume. Confirm that the iPhone routes playback to the wired accessory and set the level to a comfortable point.
  5. Check controls and calls separately. If your earbuds have an inline microphone or buttons, test them rather than assuming that music playback proves every feature is supported.

Improve what you hear after the connection works

Get a reliable physical fit

Earbuds cannot sound consistent if they sit loosely or seal differently between your ears. Re-seat each earbud, try the supplied tip sizes if your model has them, and make sure the left and right pieces are oriented correctly. This is a listening adjustment, not evidence that a particular adapter has changed fidelity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a sensible starting volume

Begin below your usual level, start playback and raise the phone’s media volume gradually. A louder signal can seem more impressive during a quick comparison, so judge any change at a similar listening level. The official setup instructions emphasize checking volume when a USB-C accessory appears not to work.

Change one sound setting at a time

If the phone provides an equalizer, tone controls or another sound setting, make a small change and listen to familiar tracks. Record what you changed so you can undo it. There is no universal EQ curve that the cited Apple, Samsung, Google or USB-IF material establishes as best for every earbud, phone and listener. Treat EQ as a personal preference, not a compatibility fix.

Separate source and connection problems

First establish that the same track plays cleanly through the earbuds. Only then experiment with EQ or other enhancements. If music stops, one channel disappears or the phone switches back to its speaker, return to the connection checks before changing sound settings.

Troubleshoot when the earbuds do not work

No sound at all

  • Confirm that the adapter matches the port: USB-C for a USB-C phone and Lightning for a Lightning iPhone.
  • On USB-C, verify that the phone supports USB-C digital audio and that any required USB-C-audio setting is enabled.
  • If the phone is a covered Samsung Galaxy model, replace an adapter that lacks the required built-in DAC with a DAC-equipped model.
  • Unplug and reconnect both ends, then start playback again.
  • Check the phone’s media volume and output selection.

Only one earbud plays

  • Stop playback and fully reseat the 3.5 mm plug in the adapter.
  • Inspect the plug and adapter opening for lint or visible obstruction, without forcing anything into the port.
  • Try the earbuds with another known-compatible connection. If the same side remains silent, the issue may be in the earbuds rather than the phone adapter.

The sound cuts in and out

  • Keep the phone and adapter still while testing and make sure the USB-C or Lightning connector is fully inserted.
  • Remove a case that prevents a complete connection.
  • Test another compatible adapter or another pair of earbuds to isolate the failing part.
  • Recheck the phone maker’s compatibility information; a connector that fits mechanically may still use an unsupported audio mode.

Music works but calls or buttons do not

Control and call support is a separate compatibility question. Google notes that some devices may not permit calls through USB-C earbuds. Test the microphone, play/pause button, track controls and call audio individually. If calls fail while music works, consult the phone and adapter specifications rather than treating the result as proof that the earbuds are defective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The phone does not recognize the accessory

Reconnect the accessory, check the relevant USB-C digital-audio setting, and confirm that the adapter is intended for the phone’s audio mode. If the phone still does not recognize it, use the model-specific support instructions; a passive or incompatible dongle may not provide the conversion the handset expects.

Charging while listening

A simple USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter occupies the phone’s only USB-C port. If you must charge at the same time, a USB-C multiport or charging/audio accessory may be an option, but simultaneous charging and audio support must be confirmed for both the phone and the accessory. The available guidance does not establish a universal combination that works across phones. More ports also mean more points of compatibility, so test the complete setup before relying on it for travel or long calls.

When to keep your existing earbuds and when to change

Keep the 3.5 mm earbuds

Keeping them is reasonable when they fit comfortably, sound the way you like and work through a compatible adapter. Apple’s adapter documentation and Samsung’s DAC guidance show that a phone without a headphone jack does not automatically require new earbuds.

Consider USB-C earbuds

USB-C digital-audio earbuds remove the separate 3.5 mm dongle, which can be convenient for a USB-C phone. Confirm USB-C digital-audio support, microphone and call behavior first. They are an alternative connection, not a mandatory sound upgrade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replace the adapter before replacing the earbuds

If your familiar earbuds work normally on another compatible source but fail only through the phone, check the adapter type, DAC requirement and connector seating before buying new earbuds. A mismatch can look like an earbud failure.

What to check on an adapter listing

  • Connector direction: USB-C-to-3.5 mm and Lightning-to-3.5 mm are different products.
  • Phone-model support: the listing should identify compatibility with your exact phone family or audio mode.
  • DAC information: for a USB-C phone that requires digital conversion, the adapter should explicitly include a DAC. Samsung advises verifying DAC compatibility for third-party adapters.
  • Microphone and remote support: confirm these features separately if you use calls or inline controls.
  • Charging pass-through: if you need to charge while listening, look for explicit support for simultaneous charging and audio for your phone.
  • Physical clearance: make sure the connector can reach the port through your case.

A low price or a premium label does not, by itself, establish better sound. The useful buying decision is whether the adapter implements the audio path your phone requires and supports the controls you need.

What is—and is not—established about sound quality

The official material used for this guide establishes connection requirements, not a cross-phone listening ranking. No comparative statistic or named study in those sources measures sound-quality gains from USB-C adapters, Lightning adapters, DAC-equipped dongles or EQ settings across phones and earbuds. It would therefore be inaccurate to promise that a more expensive adapter will make every pair of earbuds sound clearer, louder or more detailed.

A DAC can be necessary for compatibility, which is different from proving that one compatible DAC sounds better than another in every system. Once playback works, the practical variables you can control are earbud fit, listening level and your own EQ preference. Evaluate those at a consistent volume and with familiar material, and keep the adapter that is reliable for your phone, calls and controls.

A quick decision path

  1. Lightning iPhone? Use a Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter for 3.5 mm earbuds.
  2. USB-C phone? Confirm USB-C digital-audio support for the exact model.
  3. Using 3.5 mm earbuds on USB-C? Choose a compatible USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter; use a built-in DAC where the phone requires one, including the Samsung Galaxy use case described by Samsung.
  4. Want no dongle? Consider USB-C digital-audio earbuds after checking playback, microphone and call support.
  5. No sound? Reseat the plugs, check output and volume, verify the audio mode and DAC requirement, then test each component separately.
  6. Sound works? Improve fit, set a comfortable level and adjust EQ only to your preference; do not assume the adapter itself is a universal fidelity upgrade.
