1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe best WH-CH720N sound comes from combining a careful custom EQ with the right Bluetooth, DSEE and noise-control settings for your situation. There is no Sony-approved universal EQ curve: use the app’s Equalizer and CLEAR BASS controls as a starting point, change one control at a time, and judge familiar tracks at the same comfortable volume. Sony’s current app is called Sony | Sound Connect; it replaces Sony | Headphones Connect after a required headset firmware update, although older screens and the older name may still appear on your device.
What you need before tuning
Use a phone or tablet with the WH-CH720N paired over Bluetooth, the latest version of Sony’s companion app available in your region, and a few recordings you know well. Pick tracks that expose different problems: a bass-heavy song, a vocal recording, a busy acoustic mix and a quiet passage. Streaming quality, the source device and the listening environment all affect what you hear, so make changes while playing the same material under the same conditions.

- Charge the headset sufficiently for a full listening session.
- Keep the ear cups positioned normally over both ears before judging bass or noise canceling.
- Set a comfortable, fixed listening level. Louder playback often sounds more impressive even when the adjustment is not better.
- Turn off other audio enhancements on the phone while you establish a baseline; re-enable them later only if you deliberately want to compare them.
Install the current app and update the headset
Sony’s current U.S. support listing identifies the companion as Sony | Sound Connect. Sony describes it as the upgrade path from Sony | Headphones Connect and says a headset firmware update is required. The model’s support listing showed firmware version 1.1.4 dated December 9, 2025, while the Sound Connect listing was dated September 30, 2026 when checked on October 13, 2026. Availability, version numbers and screen design can differ by country and can change after those dates.
- Install Sony | Sound Connect from Google Play or the App Store. If your phone still shows Sony | Headphones Connect, follow Sony’s in-app upgrade instructions rather than assuming the older app has every current function.
- Turn on the WH-CH720N and pair it with the phone in the phone’s Bluetooth settings.
- Open the Sony app and follow its connection prompts. Keep the headset close to the phone during a firmware transfer and do not power it off until the app reports completion.
- After an update, close and reopen the app, reconnect the headset and check that the model is identified as WH-CH720N.
App labels and their locations may change. When the wording in the current app differs from this guide, use the label shown by Sony for Equalizer, CLEAR BASS, DSEE, Bluetooth connection quality and Ambient Sound Control.

Set a neutral baseline before changing the EQ
Open the app’s sound controls and listen first with the Equalizer and CLEAR BASS at their current or default positions. This gives you a reference and prevents a chain of changes from masking one another. Sony documents custom Equalizer and CLEAR BASS controls for this model, but does not publish one objectively best curve.
Make one adjustment, listen to the same passage, then compare with the previous setting. If a change sounds better on one song but worse on several familiar recordings, it is probably too aggressive. Small moves are easier to evaluate than large boosts. Save a profile only after checking it at low, medium and moderately loud levels; a bass or treble boost that seems exciting at one level can become tiring when the volume changes.
How to choose the best EQ and CLEAR BASS settings
Use CLEAR BASS for broad low-end changes
CLEAR BASS is the quickest way to change the weight of kick drums, bass guitar and electronic sub-bass without rebuilding the whole Equalizer curve. Increase it slightly when music sounds thin or lacks impact. Reduce it when bass masks vocals, makes kick drums blur together or causes the cups to sound boomy. If the headset is pressed differently against your ears, bass can change noticeably, so correct the fit before making a large adjustment.

The custom Equalizer is useful when the overall tonal balance is close but one part of the mix needs attention. A small low-frequency lift can add warmth; reducing that region can clear congested mixes. A modest adjustment in the middle of the range can bring speech and vocals forward. A restrained high-frequency lift can restore perceived detail, while a cut can reduce sharp consonants, cymbals or hiss. The app’s available bands and labels are the authority for the exact controls shown on your device.

Do not boost every band. Raising several regions at once reduces headroom and can make the headset sound harsh or distorted at higher levels. If you need more clarity, try a small cut to excessive bass before adding treble; reducing masking often preserves a more natural result.
Illustrative starting profiles
These are listening starting points, not Sony measurements or tested universal presets. Begin with the app’s neutral position, make only the indicated type of small change, and return to neutral if the result is fatiguing.
| Goal | Starting approach | Check for |
|---|---|---|
| Balanced everyday listening | Leave the Equalizer near neutral and use little or no CLEAR BASS. | Vocals, bass lines and cymbals should remain distinct across several tracks. |
| More low-end impact | Raise CLEAR BASS slightly before changing other bands. | Kick drums should gain weight without covering voices or becoming one-note. |
| Clearer speech and vocals | Reduce excessive low end first; then make a small midrange adjustment if the app provides one. | Words should become easier to follow without sounding nasal or thin. |
| Softer, less fatiguing treble | Reduce the highest active band or leave treble neutral instead of adding more bass. | Sibilants and cymbals should be smoother while detail remains audible. |
| More perceived detail | Try a very small high-frequency lift only after confirming that the recording and fit are not the problem. | Stop if “s” sounds become sharp or quiet passages acquire hiss. |
Compare profiles without fooling your ears
Use the same 20-to-30-second passage, switch between the old and new settings, and keep the volume unchanged. Let your ears rest briefly when comparing a large change. Test at least one recording that is not part of your normal playlist. If the profile works only for one master or genre, save it as a specialty preset rather than calling it your general best setting.
Decide whether DSEE helps your source
Sony describes DSEE as a function that complements high-range sound often lost from compressed sources. It is available through the app while the headset is connected over Bluetooth. That description does not mean every recording will improve: a high-quality source, a heavily mastered track or a noisy environment may make the difference difficult to hear.

- Play a familiar track from the source you normally use.
- Toggle DSEE on, listen to the same passage, then toggle it off without changing volume.
- Keep it enabled only if the change is consistently preferable across several recordings.
Sony warns that DSEE set to Auto reduces operating time. If battery life matters more than a subtle high-frequency change, leave DSEE off or use it selectively. DSEE cannot restore information that was never present in the recording, and it should not be used to compensate for an unsuitable EQ or poor ear-cup seal.
Choose the Bluetooth sound-quality mode
The headset’s Bluetooth sound-quality control has two practical choices. Sony lists Priority on sound quality as the default and Priority on stable connection as the troubleshooting choice when playback skips or breaks up.
| Mode | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Priority on sound quality | Playback is stable and you want the default higher-quality preference. | Busy wireless environments may expose intermittent audio. |
| Priority on stable connection | You hear skips, dropouts or interruptions, especially around many nearby wireless devices. | The connection is prioritized over the highest available sound-quality preference. |
Change the setting in the app, reconnect if prompted, and test the same location. If interruptions continue, move the phone closer, remove physical obstructions, pause other Bluetooth activity and check whether the source device is switching connections. Sony notes that intermittent sound can still occur in some environments, so a mode change is not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback.

Noise canceling is not an EQ effect. It works best when the cups sit comfortably around the ears and the seal is consistent. Hair, glasses, a shifted headband or a cup resting partly on an ear can reduce the perceived result and change bass at the same time.

- Place both cups fully over your ears and adjust the headband so the pads are even.
- In the app, switch Adaptive Sound Control off while you are evaluating maximum noise reduction. Automatic scene changes can otherwise alter the mode during your comparison.
- Open Ambient Sound Control and select noise canceling manually.
- Listen to a steady low-frequency source such as vehicle or air-conditioning noise, then check speech separately.
Sony says noise canceling mainly reduces low-frequency sounds such as vehicles and air conditioning. It is less effective against voices, sudden sounds and other irregular high-frequency noise, and it reduces rather than completely cancels surrounding sound. That limitation is normal operation, not evidence that an EQ profile is wrong.
Use an Ambient Sound setting when you need awareness of people or announcements. Evaluate music separately in each mode because the surrounding sound and your perception of bass will change. If the result is uneven between ears, reseat the cups before changing any app control.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand the WH-CH720N Bluetooth codecs
Sony’s WH-CH720N Help Guide states: “The headset supports the following 2 codecs for music playback via an A2DP connection: SBC and AAC.” The connected codec can be displayed in the app, and the source device can influence which codec is selected. Codec availability therefore depends on both the headset and the phone or computer.
Do not look for an LDAC switch as a way to improve this model: Sony’s model guide lists SBC and AAC for music playback. If the app reports one of those codecs, that is consistent with the documented support. A stable connection and a well-recorded source usually matter more than repeatedly forcing a codec change.

Protect battery life while keeping your preferred sound
Sony’s 2023 figures are manufacturer maximums measured under listed AAC/SBC Bluetooth music-playback conditions:
| Configuration | Maximum operating time | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Noise canceling or Ambient Sound Mode enabled | Up to 35 hours | Sony Corporation’s listed maximum; actual time varies with settings and conditions. |
| Noise canceling and Ambient Sound Mode disabled | Up to 50 hours | Sony Corporation’s listed maximum; actual time varies with settings and conditions. |
Sony also says Equalizer and DSEE can reduce available operating time. Treat the figures as ceilings, not a personal guarantee. If runtime is more important than processing, disable DSEE, use the least demanding sound mode that suits the environment and avoid repeatedly testing at very high volume.
Troubleshoot the most common sound problems
Music sounds muddy after an EQ change
- Return to the neutral profile and confirm that the problem is present in more than one recording.
- Lower CLEAR BASS before raising treble.
- Check that the cups are sealing evenly; a poor seal can exaggerate or weaken bass unpredictably.
Vocals are still hard to understand
- Reduce excessive low end first, because bass masking can hide speech.
- Try a small midrange adjustment if the app exposes one, then compare a spoken passage at unchanged volume.
- Check whether the source recording itself is distant, reverberant or heavily compressed.
Treble is sharp or tiring
- Undo any high-frequency boost and test a slight reduction instead.
- Compare DSEE off and on; keep it off if it increases fatigue without a consistent benefit.
- Lower the listening level briefly before judging the EQ again.
Bluetooth playback skips
- Change Bluetooth sound quality from Priority on sound quality to Priority on stable connection.
- Keep the phone nearby and remove obstructions between it and the headset.
- Pause other Bluetooth streams and test another location.
- Reconnect the headset and verify that the app and headset firmware are current.
If the problem remains only with one phone or application, compare a different source before changing the EQ. Equalizer settings cannot repair a wireless connection fault.

- Reseat both cups and adjust the headband.
- Turn Adaptive Sound Control off and choose noise canceling manually in Ambient Sound Control.
- Test against steady low-frequency noise rather than voices or sudden sounds, which the system reduces less effectively.
A practical setup for different listening situations
| Situation | Recommended starting setup | What to monitor |
|---|---|---|
| Quiet room | Neutral EQ, DSEE tested briefly if your source is compressed, and sound-quality priority while the connection is stable. | Natural vocals and non-fatiguing treble. |
| Train, aircraft or bus | Secure cup fit, Adaptive Sound Control off for evaluation, and manual noise canceling. | Low-frequency rumble should recede; voices may remain audible. |
| Wireless interference | Priority on stable connection. | Fewer skips matter more than a theoretical quality preference. |
| Bass-light recordings | A small CLEAR BASS increase before broader EQ changes. | Impact without masking the vocal range. |
| Speech or podcasts | Reduce excess bass and use a restrained midrange adjustment if needed. | Words should be clear at a moderate, comfortable level. |
Use this repeatable tuning workflow
- Update the headset and connect it in Sony | Sound Connect.
- Listen to several familiar tracks with the default Equalizer and CLEAR BASS.
- Choose one goal—more impact, clearer vocals or softer treble—and change one control.
- Compare the same passage at the same volume, then check an unrelated recording.
- Test DSEE separately and account for its battery cost.
- Keep Priority on sound quality only while Bluetooth remains stable; switch to stable-connection priority for dropouts.
- For noise testing, fit the cups carefully, disable Adaptive Sound Control and select noise canceling manually.
- Save the profile only after it works across the situations in which you actually listen.
This process produces a personal setting rather than a supposedly universal “best” curve. The WH-CH720N’s app controls are most useful when they solve a specific listening problem without introducing a new one.
