How to get the best sound from Cambridge Audio Melomania A100 SE earbuds

Start with the ear-tip seal, then tune the A100 SE’s seven-band EQ in Melomania Connect. After that, compare Dolby Audio and the three ambient modes at a comfortable, matched volume. Fit and settings are personal, so the best result is the one that remains balanced and comfortable with your own music.

A reliable setup order

Change one variable at a time. This order prevents a poor seal, an app setting and a source-device setting from masking one another:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Install the supplied silicone tips and find the smallest size that seals securely without pressure.
  2. Play familiar music with the EQ at its original or neutral setting.
  3. Adjust one EQ band, listen for a change, and compare at the same volume.
  4. Compare Dolby Audio on and off using the same section of the same track.
  5. Test Normal, Noise Cancelling and Transparency modes, then set ANC strength to taste.
  6. If one side sounds quieter, troubleshoot the device, app, firmware, battery and tips before changing more sound settings.

These are setup and troubleshooting methods, not a claim that one EQ curve or listening mode is objectively best.

1. Get the ear-tip seal right before tuning anything

Fit is the foundation of the A100 SE’s bass response and isolation. Cambridge Audio calls tip selection “the most important factor in making sure that your earbuds fit correctly and that the sound (especially bass) is optimal.” Its support guidance recommends trying the supplied sizes rather than assuming the pre-fitted pair is correct. Read the manufacturer’s fit and noise-cancelling guidance.

Choose among S, M and L

Try the small, medium and large silicone tips on both ears. The right size should stay in place when you move your jaw or walk, while remaining comfortable for an extended listen. It should sit securely without being pushed deeply into the canal. A tip that is too small can leak air and make bass thin; one that is too large can create pressure and may not seal evenly.

Because ears are not always identical, the best combination may not use the same size on both sides. Listen to a track with a steady bass line while gently pressing each earbud into place. If bass becomes noticeably fuller only when you hold an earbud in, the seal needs attention rather than more bass EQ.

Use a quiet-side test

If one channel is quieter, swap the left and right tips. If the problem follows the tip, inspect it for wax, dust, moisture or deformation, then clean or replace it. Cambridge Audio says replacement silicone and foam tips are available through its website; any third-party tip must be checked for physical and acoustic compatibility before use. The company’s low-volume support article includes this swap test and additional checks. See the complete one-side troubleshooting guidance.

Keep the nozzle and grille clear

Remove a tip before inspecting the earbud nozzle. Clean the tip and the visible grille carefully with a dry, soft method suitable for small electronics; do not push debris into the driver. A blocked opening can reduce treble or overall level on one side and can make an EQ adjustment appear to fix a mechanical problem temporarily.

2. Tune the seven-band EQ in Melomania Connect

The A100 SE supports a seven-band adjustable EQ in the Melomania Connect app. The product documentation does not identify one universally correct preset or publish a measured response curve, so treat EQ as personal adjustment rather than calibration. Check the A100 SE feature and specification page.

A controlled EQ method

  1. Open Melomania Connect and select the connected A100 SE earbuds.
  2. Start from the original or neutral EQ state. If you are diagnosing a fault, remove custom EQ first.
  3. Choose two or three familiar recordings: one with bass, one with vocals and one with cymbals or other high-frequency detail.
  4. Move only one of the seven controls a small amount.
  5. Listen to the same passage again at a similar volume, then compare with the original setting.
  6. Keep a change only if it improves several recordings without making another part of the range tiring, masked or unnatural.

Large boosts can consume headroom and make a driver or recording sound less clean. If a change makes the result louder, reduce the overall volume before deciding that it sounds better; loudness alone can bias a comparison.

What DynamEQ does

Cambridge Audio describes DynamEQ as maintaining tonal balance at different listening levels by adjusting bass and treble. That is a manufacturer feature description, not an independently measured result. If DynamEQ is available in your app, compare it with the same track and volume rather than assuming it will suit every recording.

3. Compare Dolby Audio without changing other variables

Dolby Audio is a defining A100 SE feature. Cambridge Audio says processing happens inside the earbuds, so it works with any paired device and does not depend on a particular phone or app. The company describes a wider sense of space and clearer separation; whether that presentation is preferable is subjective. Read the launch explanation of Dolby Audio and the SE changes.

A fair on/off comparison

  1. Choose a familiar track with clear left-right information and vocals.
  2. Leave the EQ, volume and ambient mode unchanged.
  3. Listen to the same 30–60 second passage with Dolby Audio off.
  4. Switch Dolby Audio on and replay the passage without changing volume.
  5. Repeat with a podcast or acoustic recording, because an expansive effect that helps music may not help speech.

Do not describe Dolby Audio as a guaranteed fidelity improvement. It is a processing option whose spatial effect depends on the recording and your preference.

4. Choose the right ambient mode and ANC strength

The A100 SE provides Normal, Noise Cancelling and Transparency modes. Cambridge Audio also describes adjustable ANC levels. Normal minimizes additional ambient processing, Noise Cancelling reduces outside sound, and Transparency intentionally lets more of the surroundings through. See Cambridge Audio’s explanation of Melomania ANC modes.

Use each mode for its purpose

  • Normal: Use it as a reference when judging the earbuds’ basic tonal balance or when you do not need ambient processing.
  • Noise Cancelling: Increase ANC strength only as far as it improves the environment for you. A stronger setting is not automatically better if it creates pressure or changes the tonal balance you prefer.
  • Transparency: Use it when you need awareness of speech, traffic or announcements. Judge music quality with the same mode you intend to use; ambient processing changes what reaches your ears.

Make ANC work before judging it

ANC depends on a good seal. If low-frequency noise remains prominent, refit the tips before increasing the slider. The app may display ambient controls only when the earbuds are out of their case and detected as being worn. If those controls are missing, remove both earbuds, put them in your ears and wait for the app to recognize them. The A100/A100 SE poor-noise-cancelling support page documents this behavior and the seal check. Open the ANC troubleshooting page.

5. Fix low volume or an uneven left-right image

Do not compensate for a quiet side by boosting one EQ band. Follow these checks in order so you can identify the cause.

Check the playback device

  • Open the phone, tablet or computer’s accessibility audio settings and verify that left-right balance is centered.
  • Make sure Mono Audio is disabled unless you intentionally need it.
  • Check whether the music, video or call app has its own balance, channel, EQ or volume control.
  • Test a second app or a locally stored track to separate an earbud problem from a source or recording problem.

Cambridge Audio specifically recommends checking balance and Mono Audio when one side is quiet. Use its one-side support checklist.

Return the sound path to a known state

Temporarily reset the custom EQ while diagnosing. Turn Dolby Audio off, select Normal mode and use a familiar recording. Once both sides match, re-enable each feature separately. This avoids mistaking an aggressive EQ or spatial-processing change for a hardware fault.

Check charge and connection

Confirm that both earbuds and the charging case have adequate battery. A low or uneven charge can interrupt playback or produce unexpected behavior. Disconnect and reconnect the earbuds, then test again. If the imbalance appears only during calls, compare music playback and call audio because the phone may use a separate audio path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect and swap the tips

Clean both tips and grilles, then swap the tips from side to side. If the quietness follows the tip, replace or clean that tip. If it remains with the same earbud after the source, EQ and fit checks, continue with firmware troubleshooting rather than repeatedly changing the EQ.

6. Update firmware safely

Firmware updates are delivered through Melomania Connect. Cambridge Audio’s instructions say to remain on the update screen and avoid phone calls during installation. If an update fails, close and reopen the app and try again. Do not interrupt the process because the earbuds appear idle for a short period. Firmware status is especially worth checking when an imbalance or control problem began after a connection change.

7. A100 versus A100 SE: what changes for sound?

The A100 SE is an update to the original A100, but the available official comparison describes feature changes rather than a quantified listening advantage. It identifies the following differences: a refined look including a blue finish, a redesigned honeycomb grille intended to provide a more natural treble response, and Dolby Audio. Read Cambridge Audio’s A100 versus A100 SE comparison.

Sound-related factor Melomania A100 Melomania A100 SE How to interpret it
Dolby Audio Not identified as a feature in the official comparison Included; processing occurs inside the earbuds Compare the SE on/off presentation with your own recordings; do not assume the same processing exists on A100.
Grille design Original design Redesigned honeycomb grille described as intended to provide a more natural treble response This is a manufacturer design description, not a published frequency-response measurement.
EQ Not stated in the supplied A100/SE comparison Seven-band adjustable EQ in Melomania Connect Use the SE app controls and evaluate changes by ear.
ANC and ambient modes Melomania ANC family support is documented Normal, Noise Cancelling and Transparency, with adjustable ANC levels described by Cambridge Audio Fit and seal remain prerequisites for useful ANC.

9. A repeatable listening routine

Once fit and troubleshooting are complete, use a short routine whenever you change a setting or update firmware:

  1. Seat both earbuds and confirm that the seal feels similar on both sides.
  2. Play one familiar track in Normal mode with Dolby Audio off and the EQ at its original setting.
  3. Set a comfortable volume and note whether vocals are centered, bass is even and cymbals remain clear.
  4. Change one EQ band, then replay the same passage.
  5. Return to the original setting before testing the next band.
  6. With EQ fixed, compare Dolby Audio on and off.
  7. With those choices fixed, compare ANC strength and Transparency for the environment in which you will actually listen.

Keep the setting that works across more than one recording, not the one that makes a single track most dramatic. Recheck at a lower volume as well; a setting that sounds exciting only when loud may be adding coloration rather than useful detail.

10. Common mistakes to avoid

  • Starting with bass boost: A leaking tip can be the real cause of weak bass, and EQ cannot restore a missing seal.
  • Judging ANC with a loose fit: Improve the physical seal before increasing ANC strength.
  • Changing several controls together: You lose the ability to identify which setting helped or hurt.
  • Using a quiet-side EQ fix: Check balance, Mono Audio, tips, battery and firmware first.
  • Assuming Dolby Audio is universally superior: It is a selectable processing mode; recordings and listeners respond differently.
  • Treating battery figures as test results: “Up to” values are manufacturer claims and are not independent measurements in the cited material.

For the most dependable result, establish a comfortable seal, make the app your single source of EQ and ambient-mode changes, and diagnose channel problems with the controls returned to a known state.
