Why the model matters before you change anything
Skullcandy uses different control schemes across its ANC headphones. Hesh ANC changes modes with a physical-button sequence and does not pair with the Skullcandy app. Crusher ANC 2 combines an onboard ANC switch with app controls. Icon ANC stores an app-selected ANC level through power cycles. Rail ANC and Icon ANC document a five-band custom EQ, while Crusher ANC 2 lists a different set of sound modes. A button sequence or app workflow that is correct for one model may do nothing—or produce a different result—on another.

Identify the exact product
- Read the model name printed on the headband or earcup.
- Check the box, quick-start card, or user guide if the lettering is hard to read.
- Use the matching product-help page rather than choosing a guide based only on the word “ANC.”

Set the intended noise mode
ANC and awareness are different choices. ANC is intended to reduce outside sound; Ambient Mode or Stay-Aware deliberately feeds more of your surroundings into the headphones. Select the mode that matches the situation instead of treating awareness as a weaker form of cancellation.
Hesh ANC: use the top-button cycle
Hesh ANC powers on with ANC enabled, according to Skullcandy’s Hesh ANC instructions. Double-press the top button to move through three states:
- ANC on: choose this when you want the headphones’ noise-cancellation mode.
- Ambient Mode: choose this when you need to hear more of the surrounding environment. It is an awareness mode, not ANC.
- ANC off: choose this when you do not want either processing mode.
Because Hesh ANC does not pair with the Skullcandy app, do not spend time looking for Hesh controls in an app account. Use the physical control and the Hesh-specific guide instead.

Crusher ANC 2 has an onboard ANC switch that toggles between ANC and Stay-Aware. Its product-help page also documents app controls for the intensity of both modes: Crusher ANC 2 product help.
- Turn on the headphones and use the ANC switch to select ANC or Stay-Aware.
- Pair the headphones with your phone or other playback device.
- Open the Skullcandy App and connect the Crusher ANC 2 inside the app.
- Adjust the ANC or Stay-Aware intensity while listening in the environment where you will use the headphones.
- Keep the setting that reduces distraction without making awareness unnecessarily strong.
Crusher ANC 2 announces ANC as enabled in its first-power-on voice prompt. If the headphones appear to be in awareness mode, check the switch before changing EQ or resetting the device.

Icon ANC: set the level in the app
Icon ANC activates ANC by default at power-on. Skullcandy documents an app slider for ANC and Stay-Aware level on the Icon ANC help page. The selected level remains through power cycles, so you should not need to recreate the same setting each time you turn the headphones on.
- Power on Icon ANC and pair it with the playback device.
- Connect it in the Skullcandy App.
- Move the ANC or Stay-Aware slider to the level you want.
- Power the headphones off and on once if you want to verify that the selected level persists.
If the app does not recognize the headphones, confirm the model name and use the Icon ANC guide rather than trying the Crusher ANC 2 sequence.
Rail ANC and other models
Do not infer a Rail ANC button sequence from Hesh ANC, Crusher ANC 2, or Icon ANC. Open the Rail ANC product-help page from Skullcandy’s support index and follow its labeled ANC and awareness controls. The same rule applies to any Skullcandy ANC model not listed here.
Build a better sound setting with presets first
Start with the manufacturer’s Music preset, then compare a content-specific preset. This gives you a stable reference before you change several frequency bands at once. A practical listening method is to replay a familiar song, spoken segment, or film scene at the same volume while switching one mode at a time. The method helps you hear what a setting changes; it is not an independent measurement that proves one preset is universally superior.

Skullcandy lists four Crusher ANC 2 modes and directs users to the app to change them:

To change modes, open the Skullcandy App and select the preferred audio setting. Skullcandy states this directly on the Crusher ANC 2 page: “To switch between EQ Modes, go into the Skullcandy App and select your preferred audio setting.”

Rail ANC and Icon ANC modes
The Rail ANC and Icon ANC pages document Music, Bass Boost, Podcast, and a custom five-band EQ. The bands are labeled low, mid-low, mid, mid-high, and high.
- Music: use as the neutral starting reference for ordinary listening.
- Bass Boost: increases low frequencies; use it when you deliberately want more low-end weight.
- Podcast: reduces most bass, which can make speech easier to follow when low frequencies dominate.
- Custom five-band EQ: change the low, mid-low, mid, mid-high, and high bands when a preset does not fit your ears or content.
Presets are descriptions of intended voicing, not a promise that every listener will prefer the same result. Hearing, fit, recording quality, and volume all affect what sounds balanced.
Make small custom-EQ changes
- Choose Music and play a familiar track or spoken clip.
- Change one band, or one small group of adjacent bands, rather than moving every control.
- Replay the same passage at the same volume.
- Stop when the change solves the specific problem; do not keep increasing a band simply because the first change was subtle.
- Save or note the setting so you can return to the Music reference if the result becomes tiring.
There is no evidence in the product-help pages for a single “best” EQ curve. Treat any curve you create as a personal preference for a task, not as an objective correction for every Skullcandy ANC headphone.
Separate Crusher sensory bass from EQ
Crusher ANC 2 has a physical Crusher intensity wheel that is separate from its EQ modes. Skullcandy says, “For more/less Crusher bass: scroll the Crusher intensity wheel up/down.” Pressing the wheel cycles preset intensity levels. If you are trying to judge whether an EQ change improves balance, reduce or disable the Crusher effect first; otherwise you may be evaluating added bass sensation rather than the EQ itself.

Use the Skullcandy App only when your model supports it
App support is model-specific. Hesh ANC explicitly does not pair with the Skullcandy App, while Crusher ANC 2 and Icon ANC have documented app controls. Rail ANC’s exact app behavior should be checked in its own product guide.
Crusher ANC 2 setup and firmware workflow
For Crusher ANC 2, Skullcandy’s documented sequence is to pair the headphones with the device, open the Skullcandy App, and connect the product there. The app provides ANC and Stay-Aware intensity, personalized sound, EQ presets or custom EQ, and firmware updates.
- Charge the headphones and turn them on.
- Pair them in the device’s Bluetooth settings.
- Open the Skullcandy App and connect Crusher ANC 2.
- Open the firmware-update option if the app offers one.
- Keep the headphones powered on and connected for the entire update.
- Confirm that battery level is above 25 percent before starting; Skullcandy lists that as an update requirement.
Do not apply these update requirements to another model unless its own guide states them. If an update appears stuck, keep the connection active, verify the battery threshold, and consult the exact product help rather than repeatedly starting and canceling the process.
When the app cannot find your headphones
- Check that the model name in the app matches the name printed on the headphones.
- Make sure the headphones are powered on and already paired with the playback device.
- Close and reopen the app, then reconnect the product inside the app.
- If the model is Hesh ANC, stop troubleshooting the app: Skullcandy says Hesh ANC will not pair with it.
- For any other model, use the product-specific setup video or manual in the Help Center.
Improve results before changing EQ
Settings cannot compensate for a poor physical fit or a blocked control path. Before deciding that ANC or sound quality is inadequate, check these basics:
- Position each earcup so it fully surrounds the ear and the pads sit evenly.
- Move thick hair, hat edges, or eyeglass arms that prevent the pad from sealing consistently.
- Clean the earcup and pad surfaces according to the model’s care instructions; buildup can change the fit.
- Compare the same clip at a comfortable, repeatable volume. A louder setting can appear more detailed even when it is only louder.
- Confirm that ANC is actually enabled rather than Ambient Mode, Stay-Aware, or ANC off.
These checks are listening practices, not a guarantee of a particular cancellation level. Skullcandy’s product pages describe available modes and controls, but they do not publish an independent cancellation percentage or a laboratory ranking of sound quality.

Troubleshoot with the exact model’s procedure
Crusher ANC 2 pairing reset
Skullcandy documents this reset specifically for Crusher ANC 2. Use it when the headphones will not pair, and do not present it as a universal Skullcandy reset:
- Remove Crusher ANC 2 from the device’s Bluetooth list.
- Turn Bluetooth off on that device.
- Power the headphones on.
- Hold Volume Down for six seconds.
- Turn Bluetooth back on.
- Pair Crusher ANC 2 again.
After pairing, reconnect the headphones in the Skullcandy App if you need ANC intensity, EQ, personalized sound, or firmware controls.
Other models
Do not hold Volume Down for six seconds on Hesh ANC, Icon ANC, Rail ANC, or another model unless its own instructions specify that action. Open the model’s guide through Skullcandy’s Product Setup Instructions page and follow its reset and pairing steps.
When a setting seems not to stick
- For Icon ANC, check the app slider again; Skullcandy says the selected ANC or Stay-Aware level should remain through power cycles.
- For Crusher ANC 2, verify that the app is connected to the headphones, not merely that the phone shows a Bluetooth connection.
- For Hesh ANC, use the double-press top-button cycle and listen for the mode change because there is no app setting to preserve.
- If behavior remains inconsistent, document the model, current mode, and app status before opening the matching troubleshooting guide.
What “best” can and cannot mean here
The official pages establish which controls Skullcandy provides and how the company describes each mode. They do not establish a universal best ANC level, a universal EQ curve, cancellation percentages, or independently measured sound-quality gains. The most defensible target is a repeatable personal setup: the correct ANC or awareness mode for the situation, the Music preset as a reference, a content-specific preset when useful, and small custom changes only when you can identify the problem they solve.
That approach also makes troubleshooting easier. If you change ANC mode, EQ, Crusher intensity, volume, and fit at the same time, you cannot tell which change helped. Change one control, replay the same material, and keep the setting only if it improves your listening task.
A model-aware setup checklist
- Read the exact model name.
- Open that model’s Skullcandy product-help page.
- Set ANC, Ambient Mode, or Stay-Aware using the documented control.
- Confirm the earcups are seated evenly and the intended mode is active.
- Start with Music.
- Compare Podcast, Movie, or Bass Boost only when the content calls for it.
- On Crusher ANC 2, set the Crusher wheel separately from EQ and reduce it while judging tonal balance.
- Make one small custom-EQ change at a time.
- For supported models, connect through the Skullcandy App before changing app-only controls.
- Keep Crusher ANC 2 above 25 percent battery and connected throughout a firmware update.
- Use only the reset procedure written for your model.
Following the model-specific path is the reliable way to get quieter surroundings and more useful sound without assuming that every Skullcandy ANC headphone behaves alike.
