For clearer voice chat from gaming earbuds, set the earbuds as the microphone in every part of the audio chain, test a short recording in the same connection mode and app you use for games, then adjust only the controls your model actually provides. A stable fit and a quieter space help, but they cannot move a built-in microphone closer to your mouth. If your voice still sounds distant or muddy after those checks, a headset with a boom microphone is the hardware-level solution.
Why gaming-earbud microphones often sound less clear than headset microphones
Most gaming earbuds place their microphones on the earbud housing rather than on a boom positioned in front of your mouth. That distance makes your voice more vulnerable to room noise, keyboard sounds, fans and reflections. A headset boom can sit close to your lips, so it generally delivers a stronger voice signal before software processing begins.

Reviews illustrate the trade-off rather than a universal rule. SoundGuys found that people could understand INZONE Buds users, but the voice was not as clear as it would be through a headset microphone near the mouth. Tom’s Hardware likewise described the INZONE Buds microphone as distant and muffled compared with a headset mic. SoundGuys reported distortion in an ideal-condition PULSE Explore recording and said background noise could pass through.

Use this baseline test before changing settings
A reliable baseline prevents you from judging the wrong microphone or comparing two different processing paths. Perform the following sequence in the connection mode you normally use for games.
- Choose a repeatable sentence. Speak for 10 to 20 seconds at your normal game-chat volume. Include words with soft consonants, louder syllables and a short pause so you can hear level changes, muffling and dropouts.
- Use the actual gaming connection. Record through the 2.4 GHz dongle, Bluetooth link or other connection you use while playing. Music playback does not prove that the voice input is working correctly.
- Record in the target voice-chat app or its microphone test. If the app offers a local test, use it. Otherwise make a short recording with the operating system or console’s audio recorder while the game connection is active.
- Listen for five separate problems. Check whether the voice is too quiet, clipped on loud words, muffled or distant, interrupted by dropouts, or mixed with too much background sound.
- Change one control at a time. Make a new recording after each adjustment. Changing gain, noise suppression and app processing simultaneously makes it impossible to tell which change helped or caused an artifact.
Run the baseline once in a quiet room and once under normal gaming conditions. The second result is the one that matters to teammates.
Step 1: Check the physical fit without assuming a tighter seal fixes the mic
Reseat both earbuds
Remove and reinsert the earbuds so they sit in the same orientation on both sides. Use the supplied ear-tip or fit options if your model includes them. A consistent fit makes your results repeatable and can prevent a microphone opening from being partly covered by clothing, hair or the earbud housing.

Keep the microphone openings unobstructed
Inspect the outside of each earbud for dust, fabric contact or anything covering a microphone port. Do not press the earbud deeper just to increase isolation; the microphone opening still needs a clear path to the room. Speak at your normal distance and volume instead of turning your head toward a fan or loudspeaker.
Step 2: Select the earbud microphone everywhere voice can be routed
There are usually three independent choices: the operating system, the console or game device, and the voice-chat app. Selecting the earbuds for output does not necessarily select their microphone for input.
- Operating system: Open the device’s sound or audio settings, find the input-microphone list, and choose the earbud microphone rather than a laptop webcam, controller, monitor or a previously connected headset.
- Console: Open the console’s microphone or accessories audio settings and select the earbud input if the platform exposes it. Confirm that the console is not silently reverting to its controller microphone.
- Voice-chat app or game: Open the app’s voice or audio settings and select the same earbud input. Check the app’s own input meter or microphone test after changing it.
Exact menu names and availability differ by operating-system version, console, game and earbud model. If the earbud microphone never appears, reconnect the earbuds in the supported mode, close and reopen the game or chat app, and consult the model’s current manual rather than guessing at a universal setting path.

Some earbuds expose microphone level, sidetone (your own voice fed back to you), microphone tests or noise-processing options in a companion app or device utility. Others expose only a basic input level. Open the manual or the manufacturer’s app for your exact model and identify which controls are available before adjusting anything.

Microphone level or gain
If teammates report that you are consistently quiet and your test waveform or input meter is low, raise the microphone level in small increments. Stop if loud words begin to clip or sound harsh. A higher level cannot recover detail that the microphone never captured, and excessive gain can raise room noise with your voice.
Sidetone
Sidetone changes what you hear locally; it does not automatically improve the signal sent to teammates. Use it to judge whether you are speaking too loudly or too softly, but verify every change with a recording or the chat app’s meter.
Noise processing
If the model offers noise suppression, test it with the specific noise that bothers your chat: a fan, keyboard, controller clicks or another person speaking. Aggressive processing can remove useful consonants or make speech sound metallic. Do not stack several suppressors by default; test the earbud’s processing, the operating system’s processing and the app’s processing separately so you can hear their individual effects.
Sony’s support information for INZONE devices describes microphone testing and adjustment controls, while also warning that some sound and microphone settings may not work over Bluetooth. That is a model-specific example, not a universal rule for every earbud.

Step 4: Reduce noise at the source
Earbud noise rejection is not a guarantee that your voice will remain intelligible in a chaotic room. RTINGS found the Arctis GameBuds microphone understandable in ordinary chat but likely to be overwhelmed in a busy shared living room. SoundGuys similarly reported that the INZONE Buds did not exceptionally block background noise.
- Move away from a desk fan, air conditioner, television or speaker. A small change in position can reduce the sound arriving at the microphone more effectively than a large software gain increase.
- Keep the microphone side of the earbuds away from the loudest source. Avoid speaking across a fan or directly toward a speaker.
- Close nearby doors and ask other people to avoid talking over critical callouts when possible.
- Keep keyboard and controller noise at a consistent level while testing. A filter that works in silence may fail when several sounds occur at once.
After reducing the noise, repeat the same sentence in the same app and connection mode. Compare intelligibility, not just loudness: a quieter recording can still be better if every word is distinct.
Step 5: Test each connection mode separately
Bluetooth and dongle connections can expose different features, profiles and processing behavior. Do not assume that a setting available through a 2.4 GHz receiver will also work over Bluetooth. Sony explicitly notes that some INZONE sound and microphone settings may not function over Bluetooth.

- Reconnect through the other supported mode without changing your room, fit or speaking distance.
- Repeat the same sentence in the same chat app.
- Keep the mode that gives the clearer, more stable voice and the controls you actually need.
For the INZONE Buds, Tom’s Hardware reports official support for PS5 and Windows through the included 2.4 GHz USB-C dongle, but not Xbox Series X. Compatibility therefore belongs in the setup decision, not as an afterthought. A microphone cannot be improved by settings on a platform that does not support the earbud’s intended connection.

How to interpret what you hear

These branches help separate routing errors from the earbud’s acoustic limit. If the same distant or muffled character remains in a clean recording after correct input selection, fit checks and connection tests, software has little ability to move the microphone closer to your mouth.

These are review findings under particular test conditions, not guarantees for every unit, firmware version, room or chat application. Use them to set expectations about microphone placement and noise vulnerability, then rely on your own in-app recording.
When a headset with a boom microphone is the better answer
A boom headset is a sensible upgrade when all of the following are true:
- The correct earbud microphone is selected in the operating system, console and chat app.
- You have repeated the test in the connection mode used for games.
- The earbuds are seated consistently and their available gain or noise controls have been tested individually.
- Your room is reasonably quiet, yet the voice remains distant, muffled or unreliable.
At that point, the limitation is primarily microphone placement and design rather than a missing slider. A boom places the capsule close to your mouth and is therefore more likely to produce a forward, intelligible voice. The trade-offs are a different form factor, possible changes in comfort and the need to confirm platform compatibility. A retractable boom, such as the one SoundGuys highlighted on the PlayStation Pulse Elite, can reduce the inconvenience when you do not want a permanent microphone in front of your face.
A practical decision checklist before you replace the earbuds
- Compatibility: Confirm that the earbud or replacement headset supports your console or PC through the connection you intend to use.
- Microphone sample quality: Look for recordings or tests in both quiet and noisy conditions, not only music-listening impressions.
- Microphone position: Treat a built-in earbud microphone and a boom microphone as different designs with different noise margins.
- Control requirements: Check whether microphone gain, sidetone or noise processing requires a companion app and whether those controls work in your chosen connection mode.
- Comfort and form factor: Decide whether the added boom, cable or headset weight is acceptable for the sessions you play.
Do not use ANC strength, music quality or marketing claims as a substitute for a voice-chat recording. They measure different parts of the product experience.
Fast recovery when teammates suddenly cannot hear you
- Pause the game and confirm the earbud microphone is still selected as the input in the chat app.
- Check the app’s mute state and microphone level before changing hardware settings.
- Reconnect the earbuds in the same mode used at the start of the session.
- Make a 10-second recording and listen for a drop in level, clipping or a new background sound.
- If the issue appears only in Bluetooth, switch to the supported dongle mode if your platform and model allow it.
- If the issue appears only in one application, repair that application’s input selection instead of changing every system audio setting.
This sequence restores the known-good path without erasing the observations from your earlier baseline test.
Bottom line
Best results come from disciplined testing: select the earbud microphone at every audio layer, record in the real gaming mode, keep the fit consistent, reduce noise at its source and tune only model-supported controls. Earbuds can deliver understandable chat, but reviews of the Arctis GameBuds, INZONE Buds and PULSE Explore show why a busy room or distant microphone can remain a hard limit. When your voice is still muddy after routing and environment checks, a compatible headset with a boom microphone is the more dependable fix.
