For the fastest, most consistent gaming from a new RTX laptop, start on the supplied AC adapter, select the laptop maker’s performance profile, choose an appropriate Windows power mode, verify that the game is using the RTX GPU, and update graphics software through official channels. Then tune resolution, ray tracing, and supported DLSS options one at a time while keeping every intake and exhaust unobstructed.
Those steps improve the odds of using the hardware as designed, but they cannot guarantee a frame rate. Laptop GPU power limits, cooling design, display routing, firmware, game updates, and the exact RTX generation all affect the result.

Set up the laptop before launching a game
A new laptop often ships with conservative settings intended for battery life and quiet operation. Make the following changes while the computer is on a desk or other firm surface.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Connect the supplied AC adapter. Use the adapter that came with the laptop and connect it before starting a demanding game. MSI’s notebook guidance says its systems achieve their best performance on AC power. Do not substitute a generic charger: the connector, voltage, wattage, and charging protocol must match the exact model. If the original adapter is missing or damaged, use the manufacturer’s compatibility information to identify the approved replacement.
- Open the manufacturer’s control utility. Look for a profile named Performance, Turbo, Extreme, or a similar term. Labels and available controls differ by model. ASUS, for example, documents a performance setting in MyASUS for eligible devices that prioritizes performance and thermal behavior. An aggressive profile can increase fan noise, heat, and power use, so select it when gaming rather than leaving it enabled for every task.
- Choose a plugged-in Windows power mode. In Windows, open Settings > System > Power & battery, then inspect Power mode while the adapter is connected. Microsoft lists battery-oriented, balanced, and performance-oriented choices, but says the choices depend on the computer’s hardware and manufacturer. If the control is missing, locked, or named differently, use the laptop maker’s utility instead of trying to force a setting that the firmware does not expose.
- Install the laptop maker’s updates. Check the manufacturer’s support application or support page for BIOS, firmware, chipset, and system-driver updates for your exact model. Dell’s troubleshooting guidance includes driver and BIOS updates as an early step when gaming performance is unexpectedly low. Keep the adapter connected during firmware work and follow the maker’s instructions exactly.
- Update the graphics driver through an official NVIDIA or laptop-manufacturer channel. A new RTX laptop may have shipped with an older driver than the one recommended for a newly released game. Restart after installation if requested, then launch the game again before changing several other variables.
- Close unnecessary background applications. Browser windows, launchers, recording tools, cloud synchronization, and overlays can consume processor time, memory, storage bandwidth, or network capacity. Close anything you do not need for the session, but do not disable security software or system services indiscriminately.
Before changing settings, note the exact laptop model, RTX generation, panel resolution, and the names of the performance and GPU-switching controls it exposes. NVIDIA’s RTX laptop material emphasizes that results vary by laptop model, so a setting that exists on one configuration may be absent on another. This simple inventory also makes later troubleshooting more precise.

Change one major control at a time and test the same game scene after each change. That gives you a usable baseline and makes it clear which adjustment affected frame rate, stutter, noise, or battery drain.
Make sure the game is using the RTX GPU
Modern laptops may contain an integrated graphics processor and a discrete RTX GPU. A game that is assigned to the integrated processor can run far below the performance expected from the laptop’s specification.
Assign the game in Windows
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Find the game under the app list. If it is absent, use Browse to select the game’s executable file, not merely its launcher.
- Select the game, choose Options, select High performance, and save. Windows may display the RTX GPU’s name beside that choice.
- Completely exit and relaunch the game. Some titles read the GPU assignment only when they start.
Windows labels and behavior can vary by release and laptop firmware. If the game still appears to use the integrated processor, check the laptop maker’s graphics-switching control and the NVIDIA graphics settings supplied for that model.

Check NVIDIA’s per-game setting
On systems that expose the option, open NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D settings > Program Settings, select the game, and choose the high-performance NVIDIA processor or equivalent dedicated-GPU option. Newer notebook designs may let Windows or the laptop utility control this choice instead, so do not assume that every model shows the same menu.
Understand display routing and Advanced Optimus
Some supported laptops use NVIDIA Advanced Optimus. NVIDIA describes it as a system that dynamically selects whether the GeForce GPU or integrated graphics drives the internal display, switching according to the application. The feature requires compatible hardware and firmware; it is not a universal setting that can be added to any RTX notebook.
In a February 11, 2022 article, NVIDIA reported frame-rate increases “from 11% to 27%, and beyond” across a range of games and latency reductions “by up to 22% in popular esports titles” for Advanced Optimus. Those are NVIDIA’s own benchmark results, not a promise for every laptop, game, display mode, or RTX generation. A laptop may instead offer a manual GPU mode, a display-multiplexer switch, or no user-selectable routing at all.
“Advanced Optimus automatically selects whether the GeForce GPU or integrated graphics is driving the internal display, and based on what application is running, switches as needed, delivering meaningful, measurable benefits that improve your experience.” — NVIDIA GeForce News, February 11, 2022

Tune the game’s graphics settings in a controlled order
Do not change every slider at once. Begin with the game’s built-in benchmark, a repeatable save point, or the same short section of gameplay. Record average performance and whether the problem is low frame rate, sudden hitching, input delay, or image quality.
Choose a resolution that matches the display and target
Start at the laptop panel’s native resolution if image clarity is the priority. If frame rate is too low, test a lower resolution or a supported render-scale option. A lower internal resolution can improve performance, but it also changes sharpness; judge the result while moving through a real game scene rather than only looking at a static menu.
Test ray tracing separately
Ray-traced lighting, reflections, and shadows can impose a substantial workload. Turn ray tracing off to establish a non-ray-traced baseline, then enable individual effects or a lower preset if the game allows it. This isolates whether ray tracing, rather than the rest of the quality preset, is responsible for the drop.
Use DLSS only when the game and GPU support it
NVIDIA DLSS options are integrated by individual game developers, and available modes and features depend on the game and RTX generation. If a title offers DLSS, test its supported presets one at a time and compare motion, fine detail, and image stability as well as frame rate. Do not assume that a feature shown in the NVIDIA App or in marketing for a newer RTX generation is available on every RTX laptop.
Use the NVIDIA App as a starting point
The NVIDIA App can provide game-optimization controls and software updates where supported. It may suggest a quality preset based on the detected hardware, but that suggestion cannot account perfectly for your preferred image quality, display resolution, cooling conditions, or the laptop’s configured power limit. Apply a recommendation, test it in the same scene, and keep it only if the result suits you. Feature availability and update behavior vary by GPU generation and game integration.
When the app offers a DLSS-related update or optimization, verify that the game actually supports the feature before expecting a change. Keep a manual baseline so you can revert an automated adjustment that increases noise or reduces image quality more than you want.
Adjust the remaining quality controls after the major ones
Once resolution, ray tracing, and DLSS are settled, adjust the game’s overall quality preset and individual options such as shadows, reflections, effects, and view distance if the title exposes them. Make small changes, keep a written baseline, and test the same scene after each change. A setting that raises average FPS may still produce distracting stutter or reduce visual detail you consider essential.

Keep temperatures and airflow under control
Performance profiles allow the laptop to draw more power, but the cooling system must be able to remove that heat. Put the computer on a hard, level surface. Keep the underside intakes, side vents, and rear exhausts clear of fabric, papers, walls, and other equipment. Do not use a bed or cushion as a gaming surface.
Use a stand for positioning, not as an FPS guarantee
An adjustable stand can make it easier to keep vents open and may improve the angle of the keyboard and screen. It is an optional positioning accessory, not proof of a frame-rate or temperature increase. Check the stand’s dimensions, contact points, and vent layout against the exact laptop before buying it. The available evidence does not establish a universal FPS or temperature gain from a stand.
Watch for thermal symptoms
- Frame rate falls after several minutes even though the game settings have not changed.
- Fans remain at maximum speed and the chassis becomes unusually hot.
- Frame-time spikes create visible hitching while the displayed average FPS looks acceptable.
- The laptop switches from a performance profile to a quieter or battery-oriented profile.
If these symptoms appear, stop the game and inspect the manufacturer’s temperature, fan, and performance controls. Confirm that vents are clear, the correct AC adapter is connected, and the performance profile is still active. Follow the model-specific troubleshooting instructions rather than applying a generic fan curve or firmware modification.
Understand model-to-model variation
Two laptops carrying the same RTX family name can behave differently because manufacturers configure power limits, cooling, display connections, firmware, and performance profiles differently. The internal screen may be driven directly by the RTX GPU, through integrated graphics, or through a switchable path. Those design choices affect latency, available GPU modes, and which menus appear in Windows or NVIDIA Control Panel.
Do not treat a benchmark or feature description as a guarantee for your machine. NVIDIA’s laptop materials and Advanced Optimus documentation describe supported configurations rather than a universal result. Use the exact model’s manual and support utility to confirm whether a performance mode, manual GPU switch, Advanced Optimus, or a particular DLSS feature is present.
Balance performance, noise, and battery life
There is no single best setting for every session. A plugged-in performance profile generally prioritizes frame rate and sustained power, while balanced or battery-oriented modes trade some performance for lower noise, lower heat, or longer runtime. The exact behavior depends on the laptop’s firmware and cooling design.
| Operating choice | Performance emphasis | Likely trade-off | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer performance profile with AC power | Highest performance the model is configured to deliver | More fan noise and power consumption | Long gaming sessions at a desk |
| Windows balanced mode | Moderate response that adapts to workload | May not sustain the same power level as a dedicated performance profile | Mixed work, gaming, and quieter play |
| Battery-oriented mode | Runtime and reduced power draw | Lower performance and potentially lower frame rates | Short sessions away from the adapter |
Windows may not expose all three choices, and the manufacturer utility can override or supplement them. Microsoft’s guidance emphasizes that the available power-mode experience depends on the PC hardware and manufacturer.

Diagnose low FPS or stutter methodically
If FPS is low from the first minute
- Confirm the supplied adapter is connected and recognized.
- Check the manufacturer’s utility for a performance profile and verify that it is active.
- Confirm the game is assigned to the RTX GPU in Windows Graphics settings and, where available, NVIDIA’s per-game settings.
- Update the graphics driver, BIOS, and relevant system drivers through official support channels.
- Lower resolution or disable ray tracing temporarily to determine whether the workload is simply too demanding for the selected target.
If FPS starts high and falls later
Inspect airflow and temperatures first. A blocked intake, soft surface, dust buildup, or an overly quiet profile can limit sustained power. Place the laptop on a firm surface, clear every vent, reconnect AC power, and retest the same scene. If the behavior continues, use the maker’s thermal troubleshooting process; laptop power limits are model-specific and should not be overridden casually.
If the average FPS looks acceptable but play feels uneven
Look for background applications, overlays, recording tools, downloads, or shader-compilation activity. Close unnecessary programs and repeat the same test. Compare frame-time behavior with ray tracing disabled and with a supported DLSS mode enabled. A lower but steadier frame rate can feel better than a higher average interrupted by repeated spikes.
If the game ignores the RTX assignment
Exit both the game and its launcher, recheck the executable selected in Windows Graphics settings, and relaunch. Then inspect the laptop maker’s GPU-switching controls. On systems with Advanced Optimus or a manual display-multiplexer mode, the active display path may determine which processor drives the internal panel. If the option is absent, that is usually a hardware or firmware limitation rather than a missing Windows checkbox.
If a setting or menu is missing
Do not install an unrelated utility or force a registry change to recreate it. Windows, NVIDIA Control Panel, and each manufacturer utility expose different controls according to the laptop’s hardware and firmware. Check the exact model’s manual and support page first. A missing performance profile, GPU switch, or DLSS option may simply mean that the configuration does not support it.
A repeatable checklist for every new game
- Connect the supplied AC adapter before launching.
- Select the laptop maker’s performance profile when sustained performance matters.
- Set Windows Power mode appropriately for plugged-in gaming.
- Verify the game’s executable is assigned to the RTX GPU.
- Install current graphics, BIOS, and system updates from official sources.
- Close unnecessary background applications and overlays.
- Keep every intake and exhaust unobstructed on a firm surface.
- Establish a baseline at native resolution, then test resolution, ray tracing, and DLSS separately.
- Record the setting that produced the best balance of frame rate, image quality, noise, and temperature for that specific title.
RTX laptop performance is the result of the GPU, CPU, display routing, firmware, power adapter, game engine, driver, and cooling system working together. A model-aware setup and one-change-at-a-time testing will reveal the best practical result without promising a generic frame-rate number.

Does Advanced Optimus work on every RTX laptop?
No. NVIDIA Advanced Optimus requires compatible hardware and firmware. It dynamically chooses whether the GeForce or integrated GPU drives the internal display on supported systems; other laptops may have a manual switch or no selectable display routing.
Will a laptop stand increase FPS?
Not necessarily. A stand can help keep intake and exhaust openings clear and improve positioning, but no universal FPS or temperature gain is established. Check its dimensions and contact points against your laptop.
Should I use the NVIDIA App’s recommended game settings?
Treat them as a starting point. The app can offer optimization controls and updates where supported, but your display, cooling, power profile, image-quality preference, game version, and RTX generation may call for different settings.
Recommended Free Tools
Why is my frame rate high at first and lower later?
Check airflow, temperatures, the active performance profile, and AC connection. A blocked vent, soft surface, dust, or a quiet mode can limit sustained power. Follow the laptop maker’s thermal troubleshooting guidance rather than forcing a generic fan or firmware change.
Can I buy any replacement charger with the same connector?
No. Voltage, wattage, connector design, and charging protocol must match the exact laptop. Use the manufacturer’s compatibility information or an authorized source for the approved adapter.
Why can’t I find a performance mode or DLSS option?
Controls and features depend on the laptop’s hardware, firmware, RTX generation, and game integration. Check the exact model documentation; a missing option may indicate that the configuration does not support it.
The Bottom Line
For the best practical result, game on the supplied AC adapter, activate the laptop maker’s performance controls, assign each title to the RTX GPU, keep airflow clear, and tune resolution, ray tracing, and supported DLSS modes one at a time. Expect model-specific trade-offs in frame rate, image quality, noise, heat, and battery life.
