Start by identifying how your earbuds are meant to stay on your ear, then adjust them according to that design. A secure, comfortable position can improve sound, but open-ear earbuds let in surrounding noise by design, so they will not sound as isolated or immersive as sealed in-ear models.
Identify the fit style before adjusting
Open-ear earbuds use different ways to stay in place. Common designs include hooks that wrap around the ear, clips or cuffs that grip ear cartilage, and open-ring designs supported within the ear. A fit instruction for one style may not apply to another, so check your model name and follow its manual or fit illustrations.

- Ear hooks: The hook sits around the outer ear. It may feel secure for movement, but can compete for space with glasses, sunglasses, hats, helmets, or thicker hair.
- Clips or cuffs: These attach around ear cartilage. Comfort and stability depend on the shape of your ear.
- Open-ring designs: These rely on the earbud and its supports sitting in the intended position; the right orientation and supporter size can matter.
When comparing styles, consider comfort, stability during the activity you plan to do, compatibility with eyewear or headwear, sound balance and available EQ controls, and how much environmental sound you want to hear. A pair that feels stable while you are sitting still may shift during a run or commute.

Bose Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen)
- Hold the earbud with the button on top and the left/right marking facing you.
- Hook the speaker into your ear, then wrap the barrel behind the ear.
- Adjust the earbud toward about a 45-degree angle. If it feels uncomfortable or insecure, slide it slightly up or down until it sits comfortably and securely.
Bose advises against placing the barrel in front of the ear or pointing the button downward. Its angle and orientation instructions are specific to Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen), not a universal rule for open-ear earbuds. See Bose’s wearing and adjustment guidance.

Sony LinkBuds Open
Sony says the fitting supporters help hold LinkBuds Open in the ear, and incorrect fit can affect sound quality and functions. Follow the fit illustrations for your supporter size and type. Improve weak or uneven sound
- Check placement first. Reseat both earbuds using your model’s instructions, especially if one side sounds different or the overall audio seems weak. Bose specifically notes that proper fit matters for sound quality on its Ultra Open Earbuds.
- Check available EQ settings. If your earbuds or companion app offer equalizer controls, try small bass or treble adjustments. The available controls and their names vary by product; there is no single EQ setting that suits every ear or model.
- Restart the connection if the problem continues. For Ultra Open Earbuds, Bose recommends resetting the earbuds or restarting the connected Bluetooth device as troubleshooting steps. Use your product’s own support instructions for reset steps, since they differ by model. See Bose’s poor-sound troubleshooting guidance.
Open-ear earbuds do not seal the ear canal, so traffic, conversation, wind, or other ambient noise can mask what you are listening to. The result may seem quieter or less immersive than sealed in-ear earbuds, and bass delivery varies among models. Raising volume may make sound easier to hear, but it does not change the design’s lack of isolation.

Understand model-specific features and care
Shokz says OpenFit uses DirectPitch and does not use bone conduction. The company describes DirectPitch as directing relatively greater sound pressure toward the ear; this is Shokz’s explanation of its own technology, not an independent comparison of sound leakage. Care advice and water ratings are also product-specific. Shokz rates OpenFit IP54, but says its case is not waterproof and advises against submerging the earbuds, exposing them to heavy rain, or rinsing them under running water. Do not assume these limits—or this rating—apply to other open-ear models.
