The best wireless-earbud fit comes from three adjustments made in order: insert each earbud gently, position it until it feels stable, then try tip sizes independently in each ear. A seal should improve sound and, on models that support it, noise cancellation and microphone performance—but it should not create painful pressure. Wear the earbuds through ordinary movement for 10 to 15 minutes, then use the model’s built-in seal check if one is available.
What a good fit and seal should feel like
An earbud is fitted well when it stays in place without you constantly pushing it back, remains comfortable while you move, and blocks enough outside sound for the audio to sound consistent. The silicone tip should sit at the canal opening rather than being forced deeply into the ear. You should be able to wear the earbuds without sharp pressure, soreness or a sensation that the tip is stretching the ear.

A seal is the contact between the ear tip and the ear canal that limits air leakage. Apple and Google connect a proper seal with better sound quality; Google also includes microphone performance in its Pixel Buds guidance. Those are manufacturer instructions, not a promise that fit alone will correct every audio or call problem. Wireless codecs, software, microphones and the surrounding environment can affect those results as well.

- Too tight: the ear feels compressed, pressure builds during longer listening, or the earbud becomes painful even though it appears secure.
- Well matched: the earbud stays stable, sound remains balanced as you move, and the tip is comfortable for the length of your listening session.
Because left and right ears are not necessarily the same shape, the correct size can differ between them. Treat each ear as a separate fitting job instead of assuming one pair of tips must be used on both sides.

A step-by-step method for fitting wireless earbuds
1. Start with the supplied tips
Use the ear tips that came with the earbuds before buying replacements. Manufacturers design the supplied tips and the earbud nozzle as a system, and replacement parts can have different mounting dimensions. Lay out every supplied size so you can compare them systematically.
Insert the left and right earbuds gently, following the placement directions for that model. Do not force a tip into the canal. If your earbuds have a stabilizing wing, hook or fin, make sure it is oriented as the maker shows; the stabilizer is intended to anchor the housing in the outer ear while the tip forms the seal.
2. Position the earbud before changing the size
A tip can fail to seal simply because the earbud is sitting at the wrong angle. After insertion, make small movements: rotate the housing, adjust its depth by a few millimetres, or turn the stem toward the position shown in the instructions. Google’s Pixel Buds directions specifically call for gently rotating the earbuds to find a secure position. Apple’s AirPods Pro instructions likewise have you adjust the position and retest before moving to another tip size.
Keep the adjustment gentle. A secure fit comes from the tip contacting the canal and the housing resting in the outer ear, not from pushing the earbud farther inward.
3. Check stability during ordinary movement
Walk around, turn your head, speak, smile and open your jaw. These movements change the shape of the outer ear and can expose a marginal fit that feels acceptable while you are sitting still. Apple suggests assessing AirPods Pro during 10 to 15 minutes of normal activity such as walking. Use that as a practical observation period rather than as a laboratory test.
If an earbud gradually works loose, first repeat the positioning adjustment. If it still moves, test another tip size in that ear. A loose feeling generally points toward a larger tip or a different angle; pressure or discomfort generally points toward a smaller tip or a less aggressive insertion.

4. Test the ears independently
Remove one earbud and compare sizes in that ear only. You might use a medium tip on the left and a small tip on the right, for example. Repeat the process for the other side. Do not select a size because it is the same as a previous pair of earbuds; the nozzle, housing and your ear shape all affect the result.
When changing a tip, change only one variable at a time. Keep the earbud position consistent, switch the tip, then walk and listen again. This makes it easier to tell whether the improvement came from the size or from a coincidental change in placement.
5. Listen for a consistent seal
Play familiar audio at a moderate level and compare the result while you gently reposition the earbud. A well-sealed fit should not change dramatically when you stop touching the housing. If the character of the sound changes every time you move, air is probably leaking or the tip is not seated consistently.
Do not increase volume to compensate for a poor fit. Raising the level can mask the problem temporarily while making listening more tiring. Reposition or change the tip instead.
6. Run the built-in fit or seal test when supported
A software test can provide a useful second check, but availability depends on the exact earbud model and the phone or tablet running it. Follow the on-screen instructions after you have already made a comfortable physical fit. A passing result does not override pain, pressure or movement during real use.

7. Confirm comfort after the test
Use the earbuds for a normal listening session rather than relying only on a test tone or a single insertion. A tip can pass a short seal check yet become uncomfortable after sustained pressure. Conversely, a small amount of movement may be harmless if sound stays consistent and the earbuds remain secure. The practical result during your own routine is the final decision.
How to choose between tip sizes
Tip sizing is a balance between contact and pressure. A larger tip can fill more of the canal and resist movement, but it can also feel compressed. A smaller tip can relieve pressure, but it may allow leakage or let the earbud shift.
| What you notice | Adjustment to try | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The earbud moves or feels loose | Reposition it first, then try the next larger supplied tip in that ear | More contact may improve stability and reduce air leakage |
| Pressure, fullness or soreness | Try the next smaller supplied tip and seat the earbud less deeply | A smaller contact area can reduce compression |
| One ear seals and the other does not | Choose the best size separately for each side | Left and right ear canals can require different sizes |
| Sound changes when you touch the earbud | Adjust the angle and retest before changing size | Placement can be the source of an inconsistent seal |
These are starting points, not guarantees. If moving to a larger tip creates pressure, return to the smaller size and work on placement. If every size feels unstable in one ear, the housing shape or stabilizer may be a better explanation than tip size alone.

What to do when earbuds keep falling out
Check insertion and rotation
Many earbuds are designed to be inserted at an angle and then rotated into their locking position. Read the model-specific diagram and mirror that movement on both sides. With Pixel Buds models that include stabilizers, Google’s instructions describe rotating or twisting the stabilizer as specified for that model. A tip that is the right size can still fall out if the stabilizer is not seated in the outer-ear groove.
Separate movement problems from seal problems
If the earbud stays in place but the audio sounds thin, concentrate on the tip’s contact with the canal. If the sound is fine but the housing slides out during walking, concentrate on angle, stabilizer placement and the outer-ear contact. Changing to a larger tip will not necessarily fix a housing that is positioned incorrectly.
Test each ear during the activity that causes the failure
Fit can change when you chew, talk, run or turn your head. Test the problematic ear while performing the movement that normally dislodges it. Make one adjustment, repeat the movement, and only then try another size. This avoids choosing a tip that feels secure while stationary but creates excessive pressure during activity.

Know when the supplied range is not enough
If none of the supplied sizes is both comfortable and stable, the earbud may simply be a poor shape match for that ear. Do not solve repeated discomfort by forcing the largest tip into place. Instead, check whether the manufacturer supports another compatible tip or a different stabilizer design for the exact model.
Silicone versus memory-foam replacement tips
Silicone is the standard supplied material for many wireless earbuds and is the correct first choice when one of the included sizes works. Memory foam is an alternative when the supplied silicone tips do not stay sealed or comfortable. Foam compresses during insertion and then expands to contact the canal, but the fit, durability and mounting dimensions vary by product.
| Option | When to consider it | What must be checked |
|---|---|---|
| Supplied silicone tip | First fitting attempt and whenever a supplied size is comfortable and stable | Use the size and mounting system intended for the exact earbud model |
| Compatible memory-foam tip | Silicone sizes do not provide a comfortable, stable seal | Confirm exact model compatibility before purchase; a generic tip is not guaranteed to fit |
Google’s Pixel Buds guidance names Comply TrueGrip memory-foam tips as an option to try when its silicone tips do not fit well. That suggestion is conditional and does not establish that foam is better for every ear or every earbud. Apple states that AirPods Pro tips are designed for their respective models, so verify the generation before using any replacement.

AirPods Pro
For supported AirPods Pro, Apple provides an Ear Tip Fit Test. AirPods Pro 3 use the Acoustic Seal Test with iOS or iPadOS 26 or later, according to Apple’s current support information. Start the test with the earbuds positioned comfortably, follow the prompt for each ear, and change only the indicated tip or position before testing again.
The test is model-specific: do not assume that an option shown for one AirPods Pro generation exists on another. If your device does not display the test, consult Apple’s support page rather than treating its absence as evidence that the earbuds cannot seal.

Diagnosing common fit symptoms
“The earbuds sound weak or outside noise leaks in.”
Reinsert the earbuds, rotate them into the model’s recommended position and test the supplied sizes one ear at a time. A loose tip or inconsistent placement can leak air. If your model includes a seal test, run it after the physical adjustment. If the test passes but the audio still sounds wrong, fit is only one possible cause; investigate the playback device, audio settings and the recording itself rather than repeatedly tightening the tip.
“One earbud keeps losing noise cancellation.”
Compare the two ears separately. The problem side may need a different tip size or a small angle change. Apple and Google associate a good seal with noise-cancellation performance, but neither instruction says that a seal alone guarantees identical cancellation in both ears. Differences in ear shape, microphone placement and the surrounding noise can remain.
“The earbuds hurt after a few minutes.”
Remove them and try the next smaller tip, then seat the earbud less deeply. Recheck the position before deciding that the entire earbud is unsuitable. A stable seal should not require painful pressure. If discomfort continues with every supplied size, stop using that fit and investigate a different compatible tip or a different earbud shape.
“The right ear needs a different size.”
Use different sizes if the supplied set allows it. There is no benefit in using matching sizes merely for symmetry when the ears require different contact. Mark or store the left and right tips separately so you can reproduce the working combination.
“A replacement tip will not stay attached.”
Remove it and verify that it is made for the exact earbud model and generation. Tip openings, mounting collars and nozzle dimensions are not universal. Do not stretch a tip over a nozzle that it was not designed to fit; an attachment that loosens can leave the tip in the ear or damage the earbud.
A repeatable fitting checklist
- Lay out all supplied tip sizes.
- Insert each earbud gently and orient any stabilizer or stem according to the model’s instructions.
- Rotate or reposition the housing before changing tip size.
- Walk, talk and move your jaw for a realistic stability check; for AirPods Pro, Apple suggests 10 to 15 minutes of normal activity such as walking.
- Test tip sizes independently in the left and right ears.
- Use the built-in fit or seal check only when your exact model and device support it.
- Choose the combination that remains secure without painful pressure.
- If supplied silicone tips still fail, investigate only a replacement tip explicitly compatible with the model, including a possible memory-foam option.
When a good seal is not the whole answer
Fit affects the acoustic path, but it is not the only variable in wireless-earbud performance. A good seal cannot guarantee perfect active noise cancellation, clear calls or a particular sound signature. Manufacturer seal tests are useful checks of contact, not complete diagnostics for the wireless connection, microphones, firmware, playback settings or environmental noise.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use the physical result as the deciding factor: the earbuds should remain comfortable and secure during the activities that matter to you. Then use the software test, when available, to confirm that the model detects a reasonable seal. If those two checks disagree, prioritize comfort and stability and consult the exact manufacturer instructions before buying new tips.
