The most reliable way to improve noise cancellation on the Sony WF-1000XM6 is to secure an airtight, comfortable seal in each ear, verify that seal in Sony Sound Connect, and select Noise Canceling manually while troubleshooting. Fit the left and right earbuds independently, because they may need different tip sizes. If cancellation is still limited after those checks, remember that Sony says the system is designed to reduce noise—not eliminate every sound.
Why fit determines how much noise cancellation you hear
Active noise canceling and the ear-tip seal work together. The earbuds’ microphones and electronics reduce incoming sound, while a properly seated tip blocks much of the remaining sound from entering around the ear canal. A tip that is too small, tilted, loose, or only partly inserted leaves an acoustic leak. You may then hear more voices, road noise, or air-conditioning sound and conclude that the Noise Canceling function is broken when the main problem is fit.

Sony’s WF-1000XM6 troubleshooting guidance recommends checking insertion and tip size before treating weak cancellation as a hardware fault. The best size is not necessarily the same for both ears, and the largest option is only a sensible size to try first—not a guaranteed answer. Comfort, stability, and an airtight reading in the app should determine the final choice.
Seat each WF-1000XM6 correctly
1. Start with the earbud and ear canal aligned
Hold the earbud securely, place the tip at the entrance of the ear canal, and insert it without forcing it deeply. Sony’s model-specific instructions describe holding the earbud with three fingers, then rotating and pushing it firmly into a stable position. The aim is a firm, comfortable seat rather than pressure or pain.

If the tip catches as you insert it, slightly compress the tip first and then let it expand in the canal. With Sony Noise Isolation tips, allow about 10 seconds for the material to settle into its shape before deciding whether the seal is good. Keep your head still while it settles.
2. Use a gentle twist to lock the seal
After insertion, rotate the earbud gently until it feels stable. A small twist can align the tip with the canal and prevent the housing from shifting when you walk. Do not twist aggressively or push through discomfort. Pain, pressure that builds over time, or a tip that repeatedly works loose is a sign to try another size or reposition the earbud.
3. Fit each ear separately
Compare the left and right ears rather than assuming a matching pair is correct. Ear canals commonly differ in width and shape, so one ear may seal with a medium tip while the other needs a larger or smaller option. Fit and evaluate one ear at a time, then repeat the process on the other side.
Choose the right ear-tip size
Use the included sizes as your first options
Work through the tip sizes supplied with the WF-1000XM6. Sony’s troubleshooting advice suggests examining larger sizes as a starting point when cancellation or isolation seems weak, because a larger tip may close a gap more effectively. That advice is a starting heuristic, not a promise that the largest tip will be comfortable or airtight for you.
A suitable tip should remain in place when you move your jaw, speak, or turn your head. It should not create sharp pressure, fall out easily, or require constant readjustment. If a larger tip feels crowded or painful, try the next size down and measure the seal instead of forcing the larger one.
Use Sound Connect to measure the seal
Sony Sound Connect includes a wearing-condition check and an optimal earbud tip measurement. To reach it on the WF-1000XM6:
- Open Sound Connect with the earbuds connected.
- Open My Device.
- Choose All device settings.
- Open Wearing.
- Select Check wearing condition and earbud tips.
- Choose Determines Optimal Earbud Tips.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to check the seal and compare suitable sizes.
Run the measurement in a quiet location and remain still. Movement, talking, or changing the earbud position while the check is running can make the result less useful. Test the left and right earbuds as instructed rather than assuming that a result for one side applies to the other.

What to do when the app does not report an airtight fit
Remove and reseat the earbud with the gentle twist described above, then run the measurement again. If the result remains unsatisfactory, try another included tip size on that ear and repeat the check. Inspect the tip at the same time: a tip that is tilted, partly detached, or not pushed fully onto the nozzle can leak even when its nominal size is correct.

Do not select an aftermarket tip solely because it feels different. Sony’s published guidance does not establish that a particular optional tip is compatible with the WF-1000XM6 or that it will fit in the charging case. Verify exact model compatibility and case clearance before considering any replacement outside the included set.
Confirm that Noise Canceling is actually selected
Temporarily disable Adaptive Sound Control
Adaptive Sound Control can switch between Noise Canceling and Ambient Sound according to detected activity or location. That behavior can be useful in ordinary use, but it makes troubleshooting harder because the mode may change while you are testing fit. Accidental touches on the earbuds’ sensors can also change the listening mode.
For a controlled check, turn Adaptive Sound Control off temporarily and select Noise Canceling manually in the app or with the configured control. Keep the setting fixed while you compare tip positions and sizes. Once the earbuds work as expected, you can turn Adaptive Sound Control back on if you want its automatic switching.

Test one change at a time
After choosing Noise Canceling, stay in the same place and change only one variable: reseat the earbud, switch the tip on one ear, or alter the control setting. This makes it easier to identify whether the improvement came from the seal or from a mode change. Do not judge a tip while it is still settling; give Noise Isolation tips the approximately 10 seconds Sony specifies.
Understand what Noise Canceling can and cannot remove
Sony states that Noise Canceling is most effective against low-frequency, relatively steady sounds such as vehicle noise and air-conditioning. Its official guidance also says that not all sounds can be completely canceled. Higher-pitched voices, sudden sounds, clattering objects, wind turbulence, and sounds that change rapidly may remain audible even with a good seal and the correct setting.
That limitation is normal operation, not evidence that the fit is wrong by itself. Evaluate the earbuds with a steady low-frequency source first, then consider how much of the remaining sound is intermittent or outside the type of noise the system handles most effectively. Do not expect a silent result or treat every audible sound as a defect.
Inspect the ear tips and their attachment
Check that each tip is fully seated
Remove each tip and inspect the mounting area. Reattach it straight and push it all the way onto the earbud nozzle. A loose or tilted tip can affect sound, cancellation, and wearing comfort. Before inserting the earbud, look around the edge to confirm that the tip is even and not folded under itself.
Replace damaged tips
Do not continue using a tip that is cracked, peeling, or visibly deteriorated. Damage can create a leak and may allow the tip to remain in the ear when the earbud is removed. Replace it with an appropriate, verified tip rather than trying to repair it.

Clean without damaging the material
For the Noise Isolation tips, Sony advises using a soft, dry cloth. Do not wash them in water, use wet wipes, or probe them with sharp objects. Moisture and aggressive cleaning can change the tip’s shape or surface and make a previously good seal unreliable. Let the earbuds and tips remain dry before testing fit again.

| What you notice | Likely check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Both earbuds let in more sound than expected | Seal, tip size, or mode | Reseat both earbuds, run the Sound Connect airtightness check, and select Noise Canceling with Adaptive Sound Control off. |
| Only one ear sounds poorly isolated | Different ear geometry or a loose tip | Fit that ear independently, try another included size, and inspect the tip attachment. |
| Cancellation changes while walking or entering places | Adaptive Sound Control | Disable it temporarily and test with Noise Canceling selected manually. |
| The mode changes after touching an earbud | Accidental touch-sensor activation | Avoid touching the sensor during the test and review the configured control in Sound Connect. |
| The app does not find an airtight fit | Insertion, size, movement, or damaged tip | Measure while still in a quiet place; reseat, change the affected tip, and repeat the check. |
| Low-frequency noise is reduced but voices remain | Normal Noise Canceling limits | Confirm the mode and seal, then account for Sony’s stated limitation with higher-frequency and changing sounds. |
Use a controlled fit check
A repeatable test prevents you from mistaking a changing environment for a fit improvement. Sit or stand in a quiet place, connect both earbuds, and keep Adaptive Sound Control off. Select Noise Canceling, insert one earbud using the twist-and-seat method, and wait for the tip to stabilize. Run the wearing-condition measurement, then repeat for the other ear. Only after both sides pass the fit check should you compare the result with a steady low-frequency sound such as traffic heard from inside a vehicle or an air-conditioning system.
If you change a tip, return to the same position and repeat the same sequence. Keep volume at a safe level; increasing playback volume can mask outside noise but does not improve the seal or the earbuds’ cancellation.

Reset only after fit and settings checks
Most weak-cancellation complaints should be investigated through insertion, tip measurement, tip condition, and mode selection first. If the earbuds still behave unexpectedly after those checks, restart or reset them according to Sony’s WF-1000XM6 instructions. Treat initialization as a later step: it restores factory settings and deletes the Bluetooth pairing information, so you will need to pair the earbuds again and reconfigure settings afterward.
Before initializing, note any custom controls or preferences you want to restore. After the reset, pair the earbuds, select Noise Canceling, and repeat the fit measurement rather than assuming the old settings remain. If the problem continues with an airtight fit, an undamaged tip, and a manually selected mode, contact Sony support or arrange service. A fit adjustment cannot correct a confirmed hardware or software fault.
A practical decision sequence
- Reseat: Insert the tip, gently rotate the earbud, and wait for the Noise Isolation material to settle.
- Fit independently: Check the left and right ears separately and try the supplied sizes, beginning with a larger option if the seal seems loose.
- Measure: In Sound Connect, open My Device → All device settings → Wearing → Check wearing condition and earbud tips → Determines Optimal Earbud Tips.
- Lock the mode: Turn Adaptive Sound Control off and choose Noise Canceling manually.
- Inspect: Confirm each tip is straight, fully attached, dry, and free from cracks or peeling.
- Interpret the sound: Expect the strongest effect with steady low-frequency noise; do not expect every voice or sudden sound to disappear.
- Escalate: Restart or reset only if the earlier checks fail, and use Sony support or repair if the issue remains.
Common fitting mistakes to avoid
- Using the same size automatically: The two ears may need different sizes.
- Choosing the largest tip without measuring: Larger is only a starting option; comfort and airtightness decide.
- Testing while moving: Stay still during the Sound Connect measurement.
- Judging immediately after insertion: Allow about 10 seconds for Noise Isolation tips to stabilize.
- Leaving adaptive switching on during diagnosis: A mode change can look like a fit change.
- Cleaning with water or wet wipes: Sony advises a soft, dry cloth for these tips.
- Forcing an uncomfortable seal: Pain is not proof of a better fit.
- Expecting complete silence: Sony explicitly says some sounds cannot be completely canceled.
When the fit is good but cancellation still disappoints
If Sound Connect reports an airtight fit for each ear, the tips are correctly mounted and undamaged, and Noise Canceling remains selected with Adaptive Sound Control disabled, further tip changes may not produce a meaningful improvement. Consider the character of the sound: Sony’s system is intended to be most effective against low-frequency, steady noise, while voices and abrupt or variable sounds can remain.
At that point, reset or restart using the model-specific procedure if the behavior is abnormal. If the earbuds still fail to maintain the selected mode or provide the expected operation after re-pairing, use Sony’s support and repair channels. Do not infer a numerical cancellation performance or a hardware failure from one noisy environment alone.
