None requires special equipment. Aim to build toward at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week, at a pace that makes you breathe harder, and add muscle-strengthening activity on two days.
Choose an indoor walking option that fits your space and ability
The best method is the one you can do safely and return to regularly. You do not need a dedicated workout room: a clear patch of floor may be enough. If you have a larger route or safe stairs, you can add variety.

| Option | Space needed | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| March or walk in place | A clear spot to stand | Easy to fit into a routine; increase pace or time as comfortable. |
| Walk indoor laps | A clear, even route | Useful if you have a hallway or large room; take care when turning. |
| Climb stairs | Safe, accessible stairs | Can add intensity, but requires balance and secure footing. |
| Walk in an indoor public venue | An accessible venue, such as a mall | May help when home space is limited; access and hours vary by location. |
March or walk in place
Start with comfortable steps in a clear area. When it feels manageable, walk a little faster or continue for longer. The CDC specifically suggests walking in place during television commercial breaks, making it an easy way to fit movement into an existing routine. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also lists marching and walking in place among moderate-intensity movements.

Walk laps indoors
If you have a hallway or room with enough space, use a clear, even route and turn carefully. Remove anything you could trip over. HHS describes a safe indoor walking space as having clear paths, an even surface, and somewhere to sit if needed. Not every home has a suitable route; marching in place is a practical alternative.

Use stairs only if they are safe for you
Short bouts of stair climbing count as activity; the CDC gives five minutes as an example. Use stairs only if you can do so with steady footing and adequate balance. Skip them if they feel unsafe or are inaccessible.
Consider an indoor public venue
The CDC suggests walking in a mall as one option. A public indoor route may provide more room than home, but availability, access, and opening hours depend on your location.

How much walking to aim for
For adults, current CDC guidance summarizes the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans as at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week, plus muscle-strengthening activity on at least two days. The weekly aerobic total can be spread across days and accumulated in shorter bouts; it does not have to happen in one long session.

As examples of distributing 150 minutes, the CDC gives 22 minutes a day or 30 minutes on five days. These are scheduling examples, not special thresholds. Short activity still matters: “Some activity is better than none!”

Moderate intensity is more than simply moving. Brisk walking is one example: you should be breathing harder and have a raised heart rate. A very slow stroll may be worthwhile movement, but do not automatically count it as moderate-intensity activity. The CDC says, “Any aerobic activity counts, as long as it’s done at a moderate or vigorous intensity.”
Build up gradually and make the setup safer
Begin at a level that feels manageable, then increase your time or pace gradually. Choose an activity that is enjoyable, safe, and suited to your current ability; you do not need to force a faster pace to make a start.

- Clear the walking area and use an even surface where possible.
- For laps, leave room to turn without rushing. Sit down if you need a rest.
- If balance, mobility, pain, or fall risk makes standing or stairs difficult, adapt the activity to your situation. Support or seated movement may be appropriate for some people, but there is no single setup that suits everyone.
- If you have a chronic condition, ask a health professional what types and amounts of activity are appropriate. The CDC also advises people who have been inactive, have a disability, or have overweight to check with a health professional before starting vigorous activity.
Do you need a step platform?
No. Marching in place and indoor laps require no special equipment, and safe stairs are another free option. If you do not have accessible stairs but want to try step-ups, an aerobic step platform is an optional accessory—not a requirement or a proven substitute with identical effects to walking. The CDC guidance cited here does not compare step platforms with indoor walking.

What benefits can indoor walking provide?
These options are ways to be physically active; the CDC’s benefits guidance applies to physical activity generally, not to a guarantee from any one indoor method. It lists immediate benefits of moderate-to-vigorous activity that include better sleep quality, reduced anxiety, and lower blood pressure. Longer-term benefits include support for heart health and reduced risk of several chronic diseases. The specific benefits a person experiences are not guaranteed by a particular routine.
