Start by observing, not shooting. Watch Dogs 2 gives you several ways to enter a guarded area: scout through cameras or remote devices, manipulate connected objects to create an opening, sneak past separated guards, or combine hacks with direct combat. None of those approaches is a permanent character class. You can change tactics from one encounter to the next, and the main story can be completed without killing anyone.
This guide explains a reliable first-session routine, how hacking supports stealth and combat, what the three developer-described play styles mean in practice, how to choose upgrades without following an unverified “perfect” order, and when online modes become available.

Understand the basic loop before your first restricted area
Watch Dogs 2 is built around information and choice. Ubisoft’s overview presents Marcus Holloway as someone who can hack connected devices, vehicles, infrastructure and security systems. That means a guarded location is not just a collection of enemies between you and an objective; it is also a network of objects that may give you information, create distractions or change the route through the space.
The exact targets and interactions available depend on the mission, the object and the abilities you have unlocked. Treat hacking as a set of possibilities rather than a universal button that works on every person or machine. Your first goal is to discover what the current area offers, then select the safest useful interaction.

A simple decision rule
- Need information? Look for a camera or remote-device viewpoint before moving Marcus.
- Need a gap? Search for a hackable object or person that can distract or disrupt a guard.
- Need a different route? Check whether connected infrastructure or a remotely controlled device can change how you approach.
- Already detected? Use hacks to interrupt the encounter, move toward cover or disengage instead of assuming a prolonged gunfight is required.
These are practical recommendations based on the game’s advertised capabilities, not guarantees that every target will be available in every mission.
Scout every guarded location before Marcus enters
Your most valuable early habit is to pause at the perimeter. A few seconds spent looking around can reveal the layout, guard positions, cameras, remote devices and a possible exit. Ubisoft specifically describes hacking cameras, vehicles, infrastructure and security robots; the safest way to use those capabilities is to inspect the area from a distance first.
- Stop outside the restricted boundary. Do not cross the entrance just because the objective marker points forward. Find a position from which you can observe without immediately exposing Marcus.
- Switch to an available camera or remote viewpoint. Pan through the area and note entrances, cover, open sight lines and any device that can be interacted with. The exact camera chain and access rules vary by encounter.
- Identify people who can affect your route. Mark guards, patrols and anyone whose position blocks the path. You do not need to memorize every movement; identify the few people you must pass or avoid.
- Look for connected objects. Vehicles, infrastructure, security systems and robots may provide information or an opportunity to alter the situation. The game does not promise that every object can be manipulated, so test the available options before committing.
- Choose an exit before you start. A stealth attempt is safer when you know where to retreat if a guard notices something. An exit can be the route you entered, nearby cover or a remote-device position that lets you wait out attention.
Scouting is not a separate mini-game. It is the planning step that lets you decide whether to use a quiet path, a remote approach or direct action.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow hacking creates openings
Hacking is most useful when it changes what guards can see, where they stand or how much time you have. Ubisoft describes the ability to manipulate connected objects and people, so think in terms of distraction, disruption and remote access rather than a single attack pattern.
Distraction
A hackable object or person may draw attention away from the route you want to use. Trigger the interaction from a safe viewpoint, wait for the guard pattern to change, then move through the gap. Because the exact behavior depends on the target and situation, avoid assuming that one distraction will clear an entire room.
Disruption
Some hacks can interrupt an encounter or interfere with a connected security element. Use that moment to reach cover, cross an exposed section or withdraw. Disruption is valuable even when you intend to fight: reducing the number of immediate threats gives you more time to choose your next move.
Remote access
Drones and security robots are among the remote tools named in Ubisoft’s overview. They can let you inspect or interact with a location without putting Marcus at the front of the danger. Access still depends on the mission, the target and your unlocked abilities, so treat remote tools as options to check during scouting, not guaranteed substitutes for entering the area.

Do not spend every hack immediately
If a device is useful for both opening the approach and escaping, reserve it until you know which problem is more urgent. A quiet interaction that creates a path is often more valuable than an early action that merely saves a few seconds. When the situation changes, rescan the area and look for another connected target instead of repeating the first hack.

Stealth: a repeatable beginner routine
The game supports stealth, but official material does not establish universal detection times or a single enemy-alert rule. Use the following routine as adaptable guidance rather than a promise about exact guard behavior.
- Scout the route. Use cameras or remote access to identify the objective, nearby cover and the people who can see the approach.
- Create one opening. Use a distraction or environmental change when a guard blocks the path. Wait for the resulting separation instead of sprinting as soon as attention shifts.
- Move between cover. Cross the exposed section while the relevant guard is looking elsewhere, then stop in a safer position and reassess.
- Keep the objective and exit in mind. Do not wander deeper simply because the first room was easy. Every additional room adds more unknown devices and patrols.
- Abort early when the route collapses. If your position is compromised, retreat toward the exit or a new cover position. A short withdrawal can restore options; staying in the open can turn a small mistake into a full firefight.
Stealth is not the same as never touching an enemy. A quiet takedown or a hack that moves a guard can be part of a stealth plan, while a nonlethal response can preserve the option to continue without deadly force.
Using remote tools without losing control of the mission
Remote play is powerful because it separates information gathering from physical risk. Start with the question, “What can this device accomplish from here?” rather than sending a drone or robot forward automatically.
- For reconnaissance: inspect corners, entrances and the objective area before Marcus crosses the boundary.
- For interaction: check whether the remote device can reach a connected object that would be unsafe to approach on foot.
- For timing: use the remote viewpoint to watch a patrol and move only after the route is clear.
- For recovery: if Marcus is detected, return to a remote perspective when the mission allows it and identify a safer route.
Remote access does not remove mission constraints. Some targets may be out of range, unavailable or protected by an ability you have not unlocked. When an interaction is missing, change the plan rather than assuming the game is malfunctioning.
What to do when combat starts
Direct combat is a supported option, but it is not the only intended answer. The PlayStation Blog feature on the game’s hacking design describes a “combat hacker” approach that combines active hacks with direct takedowns or combat. In practice, use hacking to reshape the fight instead of standing still and trading shots.
Pause and identify the immediate problem
Determine whether you are exposed, surrounded or simply being watched by one alerted guard. Move toward cover if possible, then look for a connected object, person or security element that can interrupt the pressure. The useful hack is the one that buys time or changes positions, not necessarily the one that causes the most visible disruption.
Keep an exit route
Before returning fire, know where you can retreat. Breaking line of sight and relocating can be more effective than trying to defeat every enemy in the first position. If the encounter permits it, use a remote device or environmental interaction while you reposition.
Use direct attacks selectively
When a target must be dealt with immediately, direct combat can finish the encounter. Avoid treating every alert as proof that stealth has failed permanently; an alert can be a cue to move, hack and re-enter the situation on better terms.

Expect variation
Enemy layouts, available devices and mission objectives differ. Official sources support the broad option to combine hacks and combat, but they do not establish a universal combat sequence or guarantee that a particular hack will work against every enemy.
Three play styles, and how to mix them
Ubisoft creative director Jonathan Morin described “combat hacker,” “ghost hacker” and “trickster hacker” approaches. These labels describe design possibilities, not locked classes or mandatory builds. You can begin with one emphasis and borrow techniques from the others whenever an encounter demands it.
| Approach | What it emphasizes | Beginner guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Ghost / stealth | Avoiding notice and using distractions | Scout first, create a path with hacks, and move when guards are separated. Exact detection behavior varies by situation. |
| Trickster / remote | Acting through drones or other hackable devices | Use remote access to inspect or interact before Marcus enters danger. Availability depends on the target and unlocked skills. |
| Combat hacker | Combining active hacks with direct takedowns or combat | Disrupt the encounter, preserve an exit route and use direct combat when it is the safest remaining option. |
A mixed approach is often the least stressful for a new player: remote scouting first, a distraction or disruption second, then stealth or combat depending on what the area gives you.

Yes. In the PlayStation Blog feature, Jonathan Morin says: “Unlike in the original game, you can actually reach Watch Dogs 2’s finale without once using deadly force.” That statement establishes nonlethal play as a viable option for the story. It does not mean every encounter is effortless, that every enemy can be bypassed, or that combat never occurs. It means you can choose a nonlethal route through the game’s broader set of tools.
If avoiding deadly force matters to you, favor scouting, distractions, remote interactions, nonlethal takedowns where available and withdrawal when an area becomes unsafe. Read each encounter on its own terms; do not assume that one nonlethal tactic applies identically to every mission.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing skills without a supposed “perfect” order
The official material available for this guide supports the range of hacks and play styles, but it does not verify an optimal early skill-tree sequence, universal prerequisites or a mandatory first upgrade. Be wary of lists that present one order as required for every player.
Instead, open each in-game skill description and match upgrades to the problems you actually encounter:
Recommended Free Tools
- Choose abilities that improve the way you gather information if you regularly enter areas without knowing the layout.
- Favor options that expand remote interaction if you prefer to keep Marcus out of danger.
- Consider disruption-oriented abilities if alerts frequently turn into difficult fights.
- Pick tools that support your preferred balance of stealth and direct action rather than spending points to imitate someone else’s build.
After a few missions, review which obstacles repeatedly stop you. That evidence is more useful than an inflexible shopping list because the game allows different approaches.

A first-session plan you can follow
Use this checklist to turn the ideas above into a low-friction opening session.
- Begin with the default objective. Learn the movement, camera and hacking prompts without trying to optimize every interaction.
- At the first guarded space, stop outside. Find a camera or remote viewpoint and inspect the area.
- List three things mentally: the objective, one hackable opportunity and one retreat route.
- Try a quiet opening. Use a distraction or remote interaction, then move through cover.
- If detected, relocate. Break the immediate line of danger, look for a disruptive hack and decide whether to continue quietly or fight.
- After the encounter, read your unlocked skills. Choose the next upgrade based on what actually caused difficulty.
This routine teaches the game’s central lesson: information gives you options, and options let you decide how much risk to accept.
Common beginner mistakes and corrections
Entering before scouting
Problem: Marcus reaches the center of a restricted area before you know where guards or exits are. Correction: Stop at the edge and use available cameras or remote devices first.
Assuming hacking is an automatic win
Problem: You expect every object or enemy to respond to the same hack. Correction: Check the targets available in that mission and treat each interaction as situational.
Staying in the first position after detection
Problem: A small mistake becomes a long firefight because you remain exposed. Correction: Move to cover, disrupt the encounter and use the exit you identified during scouting.
Following a rigid build guide
Problem: You spend upgrades on abilities that do not match your preferred approach. Correction: Read the in-game descriptions and choose tools that solve your recurring problems.
Thinking stealth and combat are opposites
Problem: You abandon a quiet plan as soon as one guard notices you. Correction: Combine styles: hack, relocate, and resume stealth when the situation allows, or use controlled direct combat if that is safer.

When online modes become available
Ubisoft Help states that online modes unlock after you start the “A Walk in the Park” quest. The listed activities are:
- 2 Player Co-op
- 4 Player Party
- Bounty Hunter
- Hacking Invasion
- Online Racing
- Showd0wn
Online service availability can change, so check Ubisoft’s current support information if a mode does not appear or matchmaking fails. The unlock condition is tied to starting the named story quest, not to completing a particular skill-tree path.
Keep the core principle in mind
Watch Dogs 2 rewards preparation without forcing one solution. Scout with cameras or remote tools, identify connected objects, create an opening, and decide whether the safest continuation is stealth, remote manipulation, combat or a retreat. The game’s systems are designed to let you change that decision as an encounter develops. You do not need a lethal build or a perfect skill order to get started; you need a habit of looking for information before exposing Marcus.
