Its opening hours revolve around learning a repeatable rhythm: read an enemy, defend with a parry or dash, create an opening, then finish the exchange with the weapon or ability that fits the situation. Exploration and progression are equally important, because mobility, secrets, shortcuts, sidequests, and upgrades all shape how safely you move through each area.
This guide explains the systems that are officially established without inventing button layouts, enemy-specific timings, or an “optimal” build. Treat the first sessions as a period of experimentation. The game gives you swords, firearms, magic, dual-wielding, movement options, and visceral finishers; your job is to learn when each category is useful and how the level design supports it.

What to learn first in Valor Mortis
The game’s official descriptions point to three connected skills rather than one dominant trick:
- Timing: Parries reward recognizing an incoming attack and responding at the right moment.
- Movement: Dashes and broader mobility let you avoid danger, change distance, and outmaneuver enemies.
- Offense: You can dual-wield and develop swords, firearms, and magic instead of being locked to one attack style.
These systems are meant to work together. A successful defense can create the space for a strike; a dash can move you out of a dangerous angle or into a better one; a finisher can close an encounter once an enemy is vulnerable. The official Steam description summarizes the intended attitude toward failure with the line, “Each death is a chance to grow stronger.” Read that as an invitation to study what happened, not as a promise that every death automatically grants a specific upgrade.
#1 Best Overall
- HARNESS CORRUPTED POWER - Each death is a chance to grow stronger. Master a combat system of parries, dashes, and visceral finishers across a variety of weapons. Channel your power to enhance attacks and unlock new supernatural abilities to inflict upon your enemies.
- SECRETS LITTER THE BATTLEFIELD - Navigate a 19th-century alternate history where the costs of endless war have corrupted the landscape. Use your newfound mobility to outmaneuver the plague-ridden abominations of Napoleon’s Eternal Guard and uncover environmental secrets that may increase your chances of survival.
- UNCOVER A HORRID CONSPIRACY - Witness a compelling story where historical figures and realities intertwine with elements of horror and the supernatural. Explore beyond the dark corners of the world to discover the truth behind the plague and your unholy resurrection.
A practical first-session plan
- Move through the opening area slowly. Test ordinary movement, camera control, and the distance covered by your dash before you commit to difficult fights. Exact controls can vary by platform and are not established in the available official material, so use the in-game control display for your setup.
- Watch one enemy before attacking. Let an opponent show an approach or wind-up. Notice whether you can safely circle, retreat, or create a parry opportunity.
- Try each combat category when the game makes it available. Use a sword at close range, test a firearm from a safer distance, and experiment with magic. You are learning timing and spacing, not proving which category is strongest.
- Practice a defensive response on a low-risk target. Attempt a parry when you can afford a mistake, then compare it with a dash away. This teaches you which response feels reliable for your reactions.
- Search around the main route. Check side passages, upper levels, dead ends, and architectural details. Secrets may improve your chances of survival, and a path that cannot be used immediately may matter later.
- Spend early progression deliberately, then reassess. If the game offers a way to level swords, firearms, or magic, invest in the category you are actually using and note how it changes your options. There is no verified universal starting allocation to follow.
Combat fundamentals
Read an attack before choosing a response
Do not begin every encounter by holding the attack button. First identify what the opponent is doing and where the threat will land. A parry is a timing answer; a dash is a positioning answer. If you are unsure whether an attack can be interrupted, create distance and observe another cycle rather than guessing.
The developers have discussed improving combat readability, hitbox range, enemy staggering, and boss difficulty during development. Those comments describe areas being worked on, not guaranteed properties of the final build. Avoid memorizing a demo reaction as if it were universal frame data. Let the released game’s visual and audio cues guide your timing.
Use parries as a deliberate risk, not a default button
A parry can turn an incoming strike into an opening, but attempting one without reading the attack exposes you to the same danger you were trying to avoid. Start with predictable attacks and stand at a distance where a miss does not immediately trap you. Once the timing feels familiar, use parries to shorten fights rather than trying to parry every move.

Because no official source establishes exact parry windows, enemy-specific sequences, or controller inputs, the useful beginner goal is consistency: recognize the cue, attempt the response, and change your plan when the cue is unclear. If a foe’s attack arrives from an awkward angle, a dash or retreat may be the more dependable choice.
Make dashes solve a positioning problem
A dash is more than an emergency escape. It can break a line of attack, move you around a guard, or place you at the range where your chosen weapon works best. Avoid spending it automatically at the start of every exchange. Keep enough movement available to respond to the next threat, especially when several enemies can reach you.
Use the environment to amplify movement. Corners, stairs, narrow approaches, and open courtyards change how many enemies can contact you at once. When a fight becomes crowded, move toward space instead of repeatedly trading blows in the middle of a group.
Rank #2
Reserve finishers for a clear opening
The store description highlights visceral finishers as part of the combat system. Treat a finisher prompt or animation as a commitment: confirm that nearby enemies cannot punish you before starting it. In a one-on-one fight, a finisher may be the safest way to end a vulnerable target. In a group, reposition first if the animation would leave you exposed.

Dual-wielding does not remove the need for spacing
Dual-wielding expands your offensive choices, but it does not make every exchange favorable. Continue to separate enemies, watch your approach angle, and use movement to prevent multiple attacks from arriving together. The system rewards choosing a tool for the situation rather than holding both weapons forward without a plan.
Comparing swords, firearms, and magic
The official gameplay overview identifies swords, firearms, and magic as progression categories. It does not publish damage values, ammunition or resource costs, upgrade returns, or a mathematically best option. Compare them by the role they play in an encounter:
| Combat category | What it is suited to learning | Questions to ask while experimenting | What is not established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Swords | Close-range timing, parry follow-ups, and controlled spacing. | Can you stay inside the enemy’s threat range without being surrounded? Does a parry create an opening you can reach? | No verified best sword, damage ranking, or required stat distribution. |
| Firearms | Distance management and choosing when to attack from outside immediate melee range. | How much room do you need to fire safely? Can you retreat or change position before another enemy reaches you? | No verified ammunition model, weapon tier list, or universal ranged strategy. |
| Magic | Using supernatural abilities to change how you approach a threat. | When is an ability worth using? Does it help you control space, finish a vulnerable target, or handle a different problem than your weapon? | No confirmed ability names, resource values, cooldowns, or ideal magic build. |
A sensible early routine is to keep one familiar close-range option and test the other categories in controlled situations. If a firearm or spell changes the distance of an engagement, use that change to learn the enemy rather than firing or casting continuously. Your preferred category may depend on your reactions, the room, and the number of opponents.
A repeatable encounter loop
- Survey the room. Identify enemies, exits, elevation changes, and any obstruction that could block movement.
- Choose the first target. Isolate an opponent when possible instead of activating every threat at once.
- Invite a readable attack. Stay at a manageable distance and watch for the cue that precedes the strike.
- Defend with intent. Parry when the timing is clear; dash or retreat when it is not.
- Convert the opening. Use the weapon or supernatural ability that fits your distance and the enemy’s position.
- Check for a finisher opportunity. Start it only when the surrounding space is safe enough.
- Reset your position. After an attack, move back to a controllable range instead of remaining locked in place.
This loop is deliberately general. Enemy patterns, hitboxes, and stagger behavior can differ, and the available official information does not justify a universal sequence for every opponent.
Exploration is part of survival
Valor Mortis’ developer describes mobility, environmental secrets, shortcuts, sidequests, and historically inspired architecture as important parts of the experience. An Unreal Engine interview characterizes the levels as Metroidvania-inspired. That combination means exploration is not merely a search for optional scenery: routes can affect how safely you approach encounters and what progression opportunities you find.

Search beyond the obvious path
When a corridor appears to end, inspect nearby doors, balconies, stairways, gaps, and alternate elevations. Look behind large architectural features and around spaces that would make sense as a shortcut back to a previous area. The sources do not establish exact collectible locations or a fixed unlock order, so use observation rather than a memorized route.
Remember blocked routes
If a passage looks reachable but you cannot traverse it yet, note its location mentally or with your own map. Mobility improvements may make a previously inaccessible route useful later. Returning to a remembered landmark is more efficient than repeatedly combing every room after each upgrade.
Use shortcuts to reduce risk
A shortcut can change the cost of experimentation. Once a route loops back toward a familiar area, you can test a new weapon or ability without repeating an entire section. Open these connections whenever the level allows it, and treat them as part of your progression plan rather than decorative conveniences.

The official overview specifically mentions sidequests. Follow them when you want additional context or another reason to revisit an area, but do not assume every sidequest grants a particular weapon or stat bonus. Their exact rewards and sequence are not established in the available material.
Progression without an invented “best build”
The game allows you to level swords, firearms, and magic. That confirms meaningful progression, but it does not establish an ideal early build. Guides that prescribe exact stat splits, a mandatory weapon, or a guaranteed boss setup would be going beyond the verified information.
Match upgrades to the way you actually fight
- If you regularly create openings with parries and stay close, prioritize learning how sword upgrades affect that style.
- If you solve encounters by controlling distance, test firearm improvements and observe whether they make positioning easier.
- If supernatural abilities are helping you handle groups or difficult spaces, explore magic progression and record which situations it improves.
These are decision principles, not numerical recommendations. Before spending a resource, ask whether the upgrade gives you a tool you will use often and whether it covers a weakness you have already observed.
Rank #4
Change direction when your evidence changes
Early choices do not need to define the entire campaign. If a category feels awkward, experiment in a safer area and compare the result with your previous approach. Keep notes about what solved a problem: better spacing, a more reliable parry, a ranged opening, or a supernatural effect. That record is more useful than copying a build whose assumptions may not fit your platform, difficulty, or reactions.

What the General Lothaire demo fight does—and does not—tell you
The developer has clarified that the General Lothaire encounter is intended for the end of Chapter II in the full game. The demo placed a bespoke version of that fight after roughly 30 minutes in a recreated Chapter I segment. In the full structure, players are expected to have more time with the mechanics and leveling before facing it.
Consequently, demo difficulty is not a reliable measure of the final encounter’s position, balance, or required character level. The developer also said the demo chapters were bespoke recreations rather than representative slices of final balancing. Use the demo to learn the broad combat language—parries, dashes, finishers, weapons, and abilities—but do not infer an exact level requirement or a permanent boss strategy from that placement.

When you die, identify one change for the next attempt. Did you attack before reading the cue? Did a dash carry you into another threat? Did you allow several enemies to surround you? Did you spend a finisher while another opponent was free to strike? A single adjustment makes the next attempt informative.
- Repeatedly missing parries: wait for a clearer attack cue and use movement until the timing becomes recognizable.
- Being hit while attacking: shorten your exchange and reset your position after one safe opening.
- Getting surrounded: move toward open space and isolate one target before committing to offense.
- Running out of options at range: keep a close-range response ready instead of relying on one category for every situation.
- Failing in a long route: search for a shortcut or alternate path before attempting the same run repeatedly.
New Game+, updates, and what was announced
In a September 2026 announcement, the developer described a planned New Game+ mode that would carry progression and loot into a second, harder campaign with stronger enemies and new surprises. The same announcement mentioned future free updates and a separate major story DLC for the Deluxe Edition.
Those statements were forward-looking plans, not confirmation that every feature was live on October 13, 2026. Check current release notes and the store page before treating New Game+, the updates, or the DLC as available. If New Game+ is active when you play, carrying your progression forward should make your first campaign choices worth understanding, but the announcement does not specify exact enemy scaling, reset rules, or loot changes.

Story length, price, and buying information
The developer estimated about 20 hours for the story in its September 17, 2026 announcement. That is a developer estimate, not a guaranteed duration; exploration, sidequests, difficulty, and repeated attempts can make an individual playthrough shorter or longer.
The same announcement gave a launch price of $39.99, €39.99, or 149.99 zł. These figures are regional launch prices and may change. Confirm the currency, edition, platform, taxes, and current availability for your region before purchasing. The developer also announced 10% launch discounts in bundles with Dishonored, No Rest for the Wicked, MOUSE: P.I. For Hire, Ghostrunner, and Ghostrunner 2; verify that any bundle is still offered before relying on that promotion.
Physical discs were reported as ready for printing, but the cited announcement does not establish a complete platform list, regional stock, or retailer availability. Treat those details as decisions to verify rather than assumptions.

Chasing an unverified meta build
No official source reviewed here identifies a universally strongest weapon, spell, or stat path. Experiment with the three progression categories and keep the option that solves your actual problems.
Using one defense for every attack
Parries and dashes serve different purposes. Forcing a parry when the cue is unclear turns a defensive tool into a gamble; dashing without regard to the next threat can place you in worse terrain.
Ignoring side routes
Secrets, shortcuts, and mobility opportunities are explicitly part of the game’s design. A straight-line run can leave you with fewer options and a harder return trip.
Treating the demo as the final campaign
The Lothaire encounter’s demo placement and balance were not representative of its planned full-game structure. Use the demo for broad familiarity, not exact progression requirements.
Assuming announced features are already live
New Game+, free updates, and story DLC were announced as plans. Confirm their current status in release notes or the store listing at the time you play.
A compact checklist for your first several hours
- Learn the timing of one reliable defensive response before taking on demanding fights.
- Use dashes to control space, not just to escape after taking damage.
- Test swords, firearms, and magic in low-risk encounters.
- Look for side passages, shortcuts, vertical routes, and signs of a later return.
- Choose upgrades based on the problems you repeatedly encounter.
- When you die, change one behavior and test the result.
- Keep demo-specific boss placement separate from the full game’s intended chapter structure.
- Verify current price, platform, edition, bundles, and New Game+ availability before purchase or planning a second run.
The strongest way to begin Valor Mortis is therefore practical rather than prescriptive: observe an attack, answer it with timing or movement, create an opening, and explore enough of the surrounding level to improve your next attempt. The game’s systems support several effective approaches, and the available official information supports experimentation—not a single required build.
