For the clearest story-first introduction to the Remedy Connected Universe, play Alan Wake Remastered → Control → Alan Wake 2. This is a practical recommendation, not an order Remedy requires. Add FBC: Firebreak only if you want a co-op spin-off; it is not necessary for this single-player route.
Recommended Remedy Connected Universe order
- Alan Wake Remastered. Start with the first Alan Wake story in its remastered form. Remedy describes it as a remaster, not a remake, and says its physical and digital editions have no content differences. Remedy’s Alan Wake FAQ provides the edition details.
- Control. Play this next to meet the Federal Bureau of Control and its paranatural investigations. Remedy identifies Alan Wake and Control as its two established franchises linked through the Remedy Connected Universe. The sequence is a way to build shared-universe context, not a prerequisite Remedy imposes.
- Alan Wake 2. Continue the Alan Wake story after the first game. Playing Control beforehand adds context from the connected setting, while the first Alan Wake supplies the direct series background. Remedy’s current games catalogue lists both Alan Wake 2 and Control.
The original Alan Wake launched on Xbox 360 in May 2010 and on PC in fall 2012, according to Remedy’s FAQ. Those dates describe the original releases; check current platform availability and retailer stock before choosing an edition.

Can you start with Control instead?
Yes. If the Bureau, strange objects, and paranatural investigations interest you more than Alan Wake’s story, starting with Control is reasonable. The recommended order is for players who want the Alan Wake story from its beginning and then the added shared-universe context before Alan Wake 2; it is not a rule for understanding or enjoying Control.

FBC: Firebreak is an optional branch for this route. Remedy’s 2024 annual report describes it as a “co-operative multiplayer spin-off game of Control.” Choose it if you want co-op play in the Control setting; it is not a required step in the single-player story sequence. Remedy’s support center lists its game overview and update materials.

Are Quantum Break and Max Payne required?
No. Remedy’s catalogue includes Quantum Break and Max Payne among its games, but catalogue presence alone does not establish that either is part of the RCU or needed to follow it. Remedy’s 2024 annual report explicitly identifies Alan Wake and Control as its established franchises linked through the universe. For a newcomer following the supported, story-focused route, those are the relevant starting points.
