The fastest way to start RuneScape: Dragonwilds is to choose your platform and storefront first, verify your PC if you are playing on Windows, install the correct version, then begin a survival routine of gathering, building, crafting, skill progression, quests and combat. Dragonwilds is a full-release survival-crafting adventure set in RuneScape’s world of Ashenfall—not the RuneScape or Old School RuneScape MMORPG. It launched on 15 September 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
This guide covers the decisions that matter before you launch, the exact PC installation paths documented by Jagex, solo and cross-platform multiplayer expectations, and a practical way to learn the game without relying on a patch-sensitive walkthrough.

What RuneScape: Dragonwilds is—and what it is not
Dragonwilds places you on Ashenfall in a survival-crafting adventure. You explore dangerous regions, collect materials, establish a base, craft equipment, improve skills, complete quests and prepare for increasingly difficult threats, including dragons. Skills and magic are practical tools for staying alive and progressing, not merely combat statistics.

The full release arrived on 15 September 2026. Jagex lists Windows PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as platforms. The Steam listing also records the full-release date. Older articles may still describe Dragonwilds as an Early Access game; treat those descriptions as historical.
Choose where you will own and play the game
Make this decision before downloading. On PC, the Steam and Jagex Launcher versions are separate installs and separate purchases. Owning one does not grant access to the other, so select the storefront you intend to use for the long term.
Steam
Steam is the straightforward choice if your games library and friends already live there. Steam’s listing states that Epic Online Services is required and supports linking to a Steam account. You still need a Steam account to buy and install this edition.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsJagex Launcher
The Jagex Launcher edition uses Jagex Account credentials. It is not a second download that automatically appears after buying the Steam version: the entitlement and installation are separate. Choose it if you want to keep Dragonwilds in the Jagex Launcher ecosystem.
Epic Games Store
Jagex’s full-launch announcement names the Epic Games Store as another PC storefront. Availability, regional terms and the exact sign-in flow can change, so verify the current store page in your region before purchasing.
PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S
Both current console families are named in Jagex’s full-release and crossplay announcements. Use the store built into your console for the installation. The official material covered here does not establish the current console subscription or online-service requirement, so check the platform’s purchase page for that detail.
Check Windows PC requirements before you buy
These are the Windows specifications listed by Jagex Support and reflected on the Steam page. They apply to the PC version, not to PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S. The official support page should be checked again before installation because requirements can change.
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10, 64-bit processor and operating system | Windows 10, 64-bit processor and operating system |
| Processor | Intel Core i3-8100 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 | Intel Core i5-10600 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 (6 GB), AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT, or Intel Arc A750 (8 GB) | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 (6 GB) or AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT (8 GB) |
| DirectX | Version 12 | Version 12 |
| Storage | 25 GB available | 25 GB available |
| Network | Not stated | Broadband internet connection |
Minimum specifications describe the supported entry point, not a promise of identical visual quality or frame-rate headroom. If your system is close to the minimum, leave more than the stated 25 GB free so Windows, shader data and updates are not competing for the last available space. A system at or above the recommended tier gives you more room for higher settings and background tasks, but the published table does not state a target frame rate.

Install Dragonwilds on PC
Steam installation
- Open Steam and sign in to the account that will own the game.
- Open the Steam Store and search for RuneScape: Dragonwilds.
- Purchase the Steam edition.
- Open Library, select Dragonwilds and choose the install option.
- Select an installation drive with at least 25 GB available, plus practical room for updates.
- Launch the game through Steam. Because Steam lists Epic Online Services as required, allow that component and account-linking prompt if it appears.
If the game is not in your Library after purchase, first confirm that you used the same Steam account on the Store and Library screens. Do not buy the Jagex Launcher edition expecting it to populate Steam; the two versions are separate purchases.
Jagex Launcher installation
- Install and open the Jagex Launcher.
- Sign in with the Jagex Account credentials that will own the game.
- Open the Dragonwilds tab.
- Select Install.
- Choose the destination folder.
- Select Download & Install and wait for the launcher to complete.
If Dragonwilds is missing from the launcher tab, check that you signed in with the purchasing Jagex Account. A Steam purchase will not appear there, and a Jagex Launcher purchase will not create a Steam license.
Console installation
On PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, open the relevant console store, locate Dragonwilds, confirm the edition and regional availability, then install it to the console’s storage. Jagex’s announcement confirms the platforms and crossplay, but the reviewed official material does not document a console-specific menu-by-menu installation procedure or the current online-service subscription rules. Those details belong to the platform store’s current listing.
Do you need a Jagex account or a Steam account?
Your account requirement depends on the edition you choose. The Jagex Launcher route requires Jagex Account credentials. The Steam route requires a Steam account for purchase and installation, and Steam notes that Epic Online Services is required. Do not assume that signing into one service transfers ownership to another.
Before you buy, decide which account should own the license and which account your friends will use for group play. Keeping that decision consistent prevents the most common first-day problem: installing a launcher that does not recognize the purchase.
Can you play Dragonwilds solo?
Yes. Jagex describes Dragonwilds as playable solo or in teams of up to four. Solo play lets you control the pace of exploration, construction and combat without depending on another player’s schedule. It also means every gathering, defensive task and preparation step falls to one character, so treat a secure foothold and reliable supplies as priorities.
A group of four can divide work: one player can gather, another can build, another can focus on crafting or skill development, and the group can reunite for quests or dangerous encounters. The game’s public descriptions establish the party-size limit, but they do not specify a universal role system. You are not required to assign fixed classes simply because you are playing together.

Jagex announced crossplay for the full launch, so PC and console players can play together when the relevant cross-platform settings and services are available. The exact current menu sequence for creating a cross-platform group is not documented in the official material covered here.

Before everyone launches, agree on three details:
- Which platform each person is using.
- Which account or friend identity the group will use.
- Which world or server setting the group will select.
When a friend cannot see an invitation, check that everyone is on the full-release build, has completed required account linking, and is using compatible world or server settings. Do not assume that being on the same platform automatically places everyone in the same world.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Your first-hour priorities
Official descriptions support the broad survival loop but do not establish a verified first quest, first recipe or exact tutorial menu path. That information can change with patches. Use the following priorities rather than trying to reproduce an unverified opening walkthrough.
1. Learn the surroundings before pushing far away
Move through the nearby area and note material sources, terrain, threats and a defensible location for a first foothold. Exploration is valuable, but an early death far from useful supplies can cost more time than a cautious return to shelter.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match2. Gather enough to create a repeatable supply route
Collect the basic materials you encounter and pay attention to where they respawn or recur. The goal is not to empty every nearby resource node immediately; it is to understand which locations can support tools, construction and future crafting.
3. Build a foothold
A small, practical base gives you a place to organize materials, recover from excursions and prepare for harder areas. Prioritize function over appearance until you understand storage, crafting and defensive needs.
4. Craft equipment before chasing dangerous encounters
Use gathered resources to improve your tools and combat readiness. Entering a tougher region with insufficient supplies can turn an avoidable defeat into a long recovery trip.
5. Follow quests while continuing to develop skills
Quests provide direction, but progression is not only quest-based. Jagex emphasizes skills and magic as survival tools, so use opportunities to practice them while exploring rather than treating all non-combat activity as optional.
6. Prepare consumables and escape options
Potions and other preparations matter before a long expedition or dragon-related encounter. Carry enough supplies to retreat safely; preparation is part of the loop, not wasted time between fights.

- Enjoy expansive cinematic sound. Big 50 mm audio drivers deliver an incredible sound experience
- Hear Enemies From All Sides. DTS Headphone:X 2.0 surround sound(1) lets you hear enemies sneaking behind you, special ability cues, and immersive environments. It’s positional clarity that can make the difference between victory and defeat. Experience three-dimensional audio that goes beyond 7.1 channels to make you feel like you’re right in the middle of the action. (1) DTS Headphone:X 2.0 requires Logitech G HUB Software.
- Be Heard Loud and Clear. The big 6 mm boom mic makes sure you’re heard by gaming partners and mutes when flipped up.
- Use One Headset For Most Game Platforms. Your headphones work with your PC or Mac via USB DAC or 3.5 mm cable, mobile devices with 3.5 mm cable or with gaming consoles including PlayStationⓇ 5 and PlayStationⓇ 4 (USB wireless stereo sound only), Nintendo Switch (wireless stereo sound when docked)
- Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.
How the Dragonwilds progression loop fits together
Think of progression as a chain rather than six unrelated systems:
- Explore: identify materials, landmarks, quests and threats.
- Gather: collect resources needed for tools, construction, equipment and consumables.
- Build: establish a base that supports storage, crafting and recovery.
- Craft: convert resources into equipment and preparation items.
- Develop skills and magic: improve the capabilities that make exploration and survival easier.
- Take on stronger content: use the resulting equipment and preparation to reach more dangerous areas and encounters.
Jagex’s console announcement refers to 13 skills. The available official descriptions do not provide a complete, current skill-by-skill leveling route here, so avoid treating an old guide’s build order as authoritative after a major update.
Common starting mistakes and fixes
Buying the wrong PC edition
Symptom: the game is owned on one service but absent from the launcher you opened. Fix: return to the storefront used for the purchase. Steam and Jagex Launcher entitlements do not transfer between each other.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Assuming minimum hardware equals recommended performance
Symptom: the game launches but settings or performance are disappointing. Fix: compare every component—not only the graphics card—with the recommended table. The published requirements do not promise a universal frame-rate target.
Starting multiplayer without coordinating worlds
Symptom: friends are online but cannot join the same session. Fix: confirm platform, account linking and world/server selection before sending another invitation.
Following an outdated Early Access walkthrough
Symptom: a quest, recipe or menu described online does not appear. Fix: treat opening instructions as version-sensitive and rely on the current in-game prompts. The full release may not match Early Access content or interface paths.
Confusing Dragonwilds with the MMORPG
Symptom: you search for traditional RuneScape onboarding steps and cannot find the expected systems. Fix: use survival-game priorities—resources, shelter, crafting, skills, quests and combat preparation—rather than MMORPG account or tutorial assumptions.
A practical decision checklist before launch
- Have you selected Steam, Jagex Launcher, Epic Games Store or a console store?
- Does your Windows PC meet the minimum requirements, and preferably the recommended tier?
- Is there at least 25 GB of available PC storage?
- Do you know which account owns the chosen edition?
- If playing with friends, have you agreed on platforms and world/server settings?
- Are you prepared to learn the opening through current in-game guidance instead of an Early Access-era route?
What the official information does not establish
The current material confirms the platforms, release date, solo and four-player framing, crossplay announcement, PC requirements and high-level survival loop. It does not establish a universal best platform, a controller recommendation, a specific first quest, a guaranteed first recipe, a fixed tutorial menu path, or current console subscription requirements. Those details should be checked in the live game and current platform listings rather than guessed from older coverage.
Where to go next
Once your account and installation are working, start conservatively: secure a base, establish a resource route, improve tools, develop skills and magic, and expand into harder areas only when your supplies and equipment support the risk. In a group, divide gathering and construction work, then regroup for quests and major encounters. That approach teaches the systems Dragonwilds is built around without depending on a brittle, version-specific opening script.
