The fastest way to learn Guilty Gear -Strive- is to follow a deliberate sequence: complete Tutorial with Sol and Ky, verify your controls, work through a few Mission lessons, repeat those ideas in Training, then test them against CPU opponents before entering the skill-banded Duel Tower. You do not need to understand every system or memorize long combos before your first match.
This route turns each mode into a specific job. Tutorial explains the fundamentals with adaptive guidance, Mission teaches practical systems, Training supplies repeatable drills, Arcade and Versus provide low-pressure matches, and Duel Tower gives you structured human competition. The instructions below are written for a first-time player and avoid assumptions about a particular controller layout, platform edition, or character roster.

What should you do first in Guilty Gear Strive?
- Open Tutorial. Learn the basic controls and the purpose of a match before worrying about optimized attacks. Tutorial uses Sol and Ky to demonstrate fundamentals, shows visual control guidance, and adjusts advice to your inputs and current skill.
- Check your button mapping. Confirm which physical buttons perform Punch, Kick, Slash, Heavy Slash and Dust. Controller layouts differ, so trust the on-screen display rather than a guide that assumes a specific pad.
- Complete introductory Mission lessons. Mission Mode is the game’s systems curriculum. It presents practical challenges for techniques, defensive responses and combos, then suggests what to practice next as you earn points.
- Recreate one lesson in Training. Use the command list, example videos, recording tools and automatic counterattack settings to repeat the situation until the input and response feel deliberate.
- Play a few offline matches. Arcade and CPU Versus let you apply one idea without the pressure of a human opponent. Focus on blocking, movement and one reliable punish instead of trying to win every round.
- Enter online play with a small plan. Duel Tower organizes floors around skill levels and moves players according to match results. Bring one repeatable attack, one defensive answer and one lesson to review after each match.
That order is guidance rather than a fixed requirement from Arc System Works. You can revisit any mode whenever a match exposes a weakness.

The five attack buttons
Community guides commonly abbreviate the attack buttons as follows:

| Notation | Meaning | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| P | Punch | The physical button assigned to Punch on your controller |
| K | Kick | The physical button assigned to Kick on your controller |
| S | Slash | The physical button assigned to Slash on your controller |
| HS | Heavy Slash | The physical button assigned to Heavy Slash on your controller |
| D | Dust | The physical button assigned to Dust on your controller |
When a guide writes a string such as P, K or HS, it means the attack button, not a specific location on your pad. A move written with a direction normally uses numpad notation: imagine the numbers on a keyboard’s numeric keypad, with 5 meaning neutral, 6 forward, 4 backward, 2 down and 8 up. Diagonal directions combine two numbers, such as 2 and 3 for down-forward. Check the in-game command display whenever a notation seems unclear.
Movement you should practice immediately
Before drilling a combo, make sure you can walk toward and away from the opponent, crouch, jump and block. Practice changing from movement to block without pressing an attack. This basic control is more valuable in early matches than a difficult sequence that works only when the opponent stands still.
Learn one anti-air response as soon as a Mission lesson or Training exercise introduces it. An anti-air is an attack selected to stop an opponent who jumps toward you. You do not need a complete matchup chart; you need one response you can recognize and execute consistently.
The objective of a round
The immediate goal is simple: reduce the opponent’s health to zero for a knockout while preserving enough health to continue the round. Tutorial and the official battle explanation build the more advanced systems around that basic exchange of attacks, defense and positioning.
Tutorial or Mission Mode: which is better for beginners?
They answer different questions, so neither replaces the other. Tutorial is the best first contact because it explains controls and fundamentals while adapting its advice to what you do. Mission is better after you can move and block because it asks you to perform practical techniques and gives you a progression of challenges.
| Mode | What it teaches | Guidance style | Opponent and pressure | Prepares you for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tutorial | Controls, movement and fundamental mechanics | Visual guidance with advice adjusted to your inputs and skills; Sol and Ky provide the demonstrations | Guided exercises rather than a normal match | Mission lessons and basic offline play |
| Mission | System mechanics, practical responses and combos | Challenge-based lessons with points and suggestions for what to try next | Scripted tasks; pressure rises as lessons become more demanding | Training drills and match situations |
| Training | Moves, combos and repeatable situations | Open-ended practice with command lists, example videos, recording and automatic counterattack settings | No human opponent unless you arrange a local drill | Reliable execution in Arcade, Versus and online matches |
| Arcade | Applying fundamentals against CPU opponents | Match route with character-specific story branches; a helper can appear when you are in trouble | CPU pressure that changes during the route | Confidence before human matches |
| Versus | Testing a plan in individual matches | Select your opponent and repeat the same situation as needed | Local player or selectable CPU skill levels | Focused practice and first victories |
| Duel Tower | Structured online competition | Skill-level floors with movement and restrictions based on results | Human opponents and match pressure | Adapting your plan against real players |
| Combo Maker | Finding and sharing combo examples | Browse beginner-to-advanced examples and community uploads | Demonstration rather than a match | New routes after your basic combo is stable |
Use Tutorial when you do not know what a control or mechanic means. Use Mission when you know the buttons but need a practical answer, such as how to respond to a jump or apply a system mechanic. Use Training when you can describe the problem and want repetitions until the response becomes dependable.
How to use Tutorial without getting overwhelmed
Follow the demonstrations first
Start with the visual control prompts and perform the requested movement or attack before experimenting. Sol and Ky are teaching examples, not a requirement that you choose either character for your main play. The value of the opening lessons is learning how the game reads directions, attacks, jumps and blocks.

Notice the adaptive advice
Tutorial can adjust advice to your inputs and skills. If you repeatedly miss a direction, slow down and copy the visual cue rather than mashing until the move appears. If a lesson feels easy, continue instead of searching for an advanced route elsewhere; the mode is designed to point you toward a next step.
Leave with three answers
- Which buttons are Punch, Kick, Slash, Heavy Slash and Dust on your controller?
- How do you walk, crouch, jump and block on command?
- How does the game indicate that an attack, defense or movement lesson succeeded?
You do not need to finish every advanced explanation before moving on. Mission and Training provide better repetition once the vocabulary is familiar.
How Mission Mode builds practical skills
Treat each lesson as a question
Mission challenges are most useful when you identify the situation they represent. A lesson may ask for a technique, a combo or a response to an opponent’s action. Do not merely clear it once; understand what triggered the response and where you would use it in a match.
Use the progression suggestions
Mission awards points and suggests what to try next. Follow that recommendation until a lesson introduces a mechanic you genuinely cannot execute, then move to Training and recreate the exercise. Returning to Mission after a short drill keeps the curriculum connected to the problem you are solving.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRecord one sentence after a difficult lesson
Write a note such as “block the jump, then use my anti-air” or “practice the direction before pressing HS.” A short description turns a failed attempt into a specific Training objective. Avoid collecting a long list of unexplained commands; one understood response is more useful than ten unfinished lessons.
How to practice combos and situations in Training
Start with a combo you can repeat
Choose a short sequence from Mission, the command list or a beginner Combo Maker example. Your first combo should be reliable from a normal hit or a simple opening, not the most damaging route available. A route that works three times in a row is a better starting point than a longer route that succeeds only in ideal conditions.
Use the command list and example videos
Training provides command lists with example videos and descriptions. Watch the example once, then perform the move slowly enough to see each direction and button. If the command display shows a different input from what you expected, trust the display and your controller mapping.

Record the situation
Recording tools let you recreate an opponent’s action. Record a jump-in, a block string or another interaction that caused trouble in a match, then play it back while testing different responses. This changes Training from free-form button pressing into a repeatable experiment.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Turn on automatic counterattacks when appropriate
Automatic counterattack settings can reveal whether your sequence leaves a gap. Try the same block string against the setting, then adjust timing or spacing until your intended follow-up is protected. The purpose is not to prove that every sequence is airtight; it is to learn which part of the interaction you can control.
Use a simple repetition test
- Perform the combo or response five times from a neutral starting position.
- Repeat it after movement, such as walking forward or blocking first.
- Repeat it while the recorded opponent action is playing.
- Stop when you can explain why the response works, not merely when the input happens to succeed.
Return to Training after an online match for the single interaction that caused the most trouble. Do not try to repair your entire game plan at once.
Which mechanics should you learn early?
Roman Cancel
Roman Cancel cancels an attack, sends out a shockwave and slows the opponent when it connects. That makes it useful both offensively and defensively: you can extend a successful opening, change the timing of an exchange or create space when an attack leaves you vulnerable. Learn the basic purpose first. Advanced Roman Cancel routes can wait until your movement, blocking and first combo are dependable.
Psych Burst
Psych Burst can get you out of a powerful attack and can end an opponent’s combo, but it consumes 100 percent of the Burst Gauge and then requires time to recharge. Because the resource is costly, do not press it automatically whenever you are hit. Practice recognizing a situation in which escaping the combo is more valuable than saving the resource for a later opportunity.
Wall Break
Sustained pressure near the corner can break the wall. The official homepage describes a break as sending the opponent to another area and granting temporary benefits such as increased attack power. For a beginner, the practical lesson is positional: corner pressure can produce a reward, but you should not abandon defense merely to force a wall interaction.
How to apply your basics offline
Arcade
Arcade is a CPU match route with character-specific story branches. A helper can appear when you are struggling, so it is a useful bridge between lessons and ordinary matches. Enter with one objective, such as blocking low attacks or attempting your anti-air, and judge success by whether you practiced that objective rather than by the final score.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Versus
Versus supports local play and CPU matches with selectable skill levels. Use it as a controlled test: choose a CPU level that lets you see the opponent’s actions, perform your short combo when the opening appears and reset the situation when you need another attempt. A local partner can repeat a jump or block sequence so you can practice a single answer without waiting for a full match to produce it.
Offline play is also the safest place to get a first victory. Winning is encouraging, but the larger benefit is learning what your chosen character does when the opponent blocks, jumps or backs away.

When should you play online?
Try Duel Tower after you can perform a small, repeatable plan: move and block reliably, use one anti-air, complete one short combo from a simple opening and recognize when Psych Burst is a deliberate escape rather than a panic button. You do not need a complete move list or advanced Roman Cancel routes.
Duel Tower floors are organized around skill levels. Restrictions and movement between floors depend on match results, so the system is intended to place you near players with comparable results rather than demand a single universal rank threshold. Exact floor behavior can change with updates; read the current in-game rules if a restriction or promotion condition differs from what you remember.
Choose one test for each online set
- Against jump-heavy opponents, practice your anti-air.
- Against players who block, practice stopping safely and creating a new opening.
- After being knocked down, practice one defensive choice instead of guessing repeatedly.
- After a missed combo, note the exact input or timing that failed and reproduce it in Training.
Online matches are experiments. Trying to memorize the entire system before entering delays the feedback that tells you what to practice next.

| Session | Primary mode | Work to complete | Evidence that you are ready to continue |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tutorial | Learn the button meanings, movement, blocking and the basic match objective; verify your physical mapping | You can move, block and identify each attack button without guessing |
| 2 | Mission | Complete early system lessons and note one mechanic that remains unclear | You can describe the situation each selected lesson is teaching |
| 3 | Training | Recreate one Mission situation and practice one short, reliable combo | The response works repeatedly from a neutral start and after movement |
| 4 | Arcade or CPU Versus | Play matches while prioritizing blocking and one punish over winning every round | You can identify one successful defensive decision and one recurring mistake |
| 5 and later | Duel Tower and Training | Play online, then drill the single interaction that caused the most trouble | Each match produces a specific Training task rather than a vague feeling of failure |
The schedule is editorial guidance based on what each mode is designed to do, not a claim that Arc System Works prescribes a fixed number of sessions.
Common beginner problems and fixes
“My controller does not match a guide.”
Guides use P, K, S, HS and D as functional names, while your physical buttons depend on your mapping. Open the control display, identify the five attacks and translate the guide’s notation to your own layout. Do not remap repeatedly while learning; consistency matters more than copying another player’s arrangement.

“I can do the combo in the command list but not in a match.”
Practice the combo after walking, blocking and responding to a recorded attack. A command-list success proves that the input is possible; it does not prove that you can recognize an opening or perform the sequence under pressure.
“I keep losing to jumping attacks.”
Return to Mission for an anti-air lesson, then record a jump-in in Training. Practice seeing the jump, holding the appropriate defense until the timing is clear and pressing your chosen anti-air. Test the response in CPU Versus before trying to solve every other matchup problem.
“I use Psych Burst every time I am hit.”
Remember that Psych Burst consumes the entire Burst Gauge and recharges over time. In Training or offline matches, wait through a nonessential hit and reserve the Burst for a combo or pressure sequence that you have decided is worth escaping.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →“Online feels too fast.”
Reduce your goal to one interaction per match and return to Training immediately afterward. Duel Tower is for applying skills against humans, not for replacing the practice mode. If you cannot identify what happened, reproduce the recorded situation before adding another attack to your plan.
Keeping your information current
Character rosters, season mechanics, platform editions and online populations can change. The current official homepage references Ver. 2.00 and 2.02-era updates and Season 5, so check live patch notes before relying on frame data, character tier claims or exact system costs. This beginner route deliberately avoids claiming that one character is universally easiest, that a particular platform performs better, or that a specific online population is guaranteed.
Arc System Works currently presents the game’s reach as more than 3.5 million players worldwide. That is a publisher headline figure, not an independently audited sales total, and it does not guarantee that every region or platform will have the same matchmaking activity.
Your next decision after the first few sessions
If you still struggle with inputs, stay in Tutorial and Training until movement, blocking and one attack sequence are comfortable. If the controls are familiar but systems are confusing, continue Mission lessons and write down the situation each one represents. If you can execute a small plan but panic in matches, use Arcade or CPU Versus to repeat the plan under modest pressure. If you can explain your mistakes and reproduce them in Training, Duel Tower is the right next step.
