Start with God of War (2018), then play God of War Ragnarök. Both games are available on PS4, PS5, and Windows PC. If you plan to play on PC, check the requirements for each game separately: Ragnarök needs a 190 GB SSD and a stronger minimum graphics card than the 2018 game.
Which God of War should you play first?
Play God of War (2018) before God of War Ragnarök. PlayStation identifies Ragnarök as the sequel, so this order lets you follow the story from its beginning. PlayStation’s series page lists both games for PS4, PS5, and PC.

Where can you play the games?
Choose based on the hardware you already own and, for PC, whether your system meets each game’s requirements. Both games are available on PS4 and PS5; PC versions are sold through Steam and the Epic Games Store. Store availability and prices can vary by country and change over time, so check the listing for your region.
What should PC players check before buying?
The requirements below are published by PlayStation, not independent performance-test results. The resolution and frame-rate targets are vendor-stated averages; actual performance can vary with hardware and settings.

PlayStation lists 70 GB for the 2018 game on its live product page; that page does not state a publication year. PlayStation and Santa Monica Studio list 190 GB on the Ragnarök PC page, and the August 2024 announcement details its performance tiers. These are publisher requirements, not a guarantee that every PC meeting them will deliver identical results. Can you use a keyboard and mouse or a controller on PC?
Both PC games support keyboard and mouse as well as gamepads. Their controls can be customized; the listed supported controllers include DualShock 4, DualSense, and Xbox Wireless Controller for the 2018 game, and DualShock 4, DualSense, and other gamepads for Ragnarök. For the full range of Ragnarök controller features, PlayStation says to connect a DualSense with a wired connection. A controller is optional if you would rather use keyboard and mouse.

Do you need a PlayStation account for Ragnarök on PC?
No. Account linking is optional; it is not required to launch or play the PC game. Linking adds account features, including trophies and friend management, and grants the Armor of the Black Bear set, available at the first Lost Items chest in the Realm Between Realms. PlayStation’s PC FAQ explains the account benefits.

Is Valhalla included, and how long do the games take?
A PC purchase of God of War Ragnarök includes God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla, which PlayStation describes as an epilogue and a replayable adventure with roguelite elements. On PS4 and PS5, PlayStation describes Valhalla as free DLC for owners of Ragnarök.
PlayStation’s current FAQ gives these approximate completion times and advises players to go at their own pace:

PlayStation says the PC version of Ragnarök has the same accessibility features as its PS5 version. If you need a particular feature or setting, check PlayStation’s accessibility information for the specific details rather than assuming a feature is available.
