After Tutorial Island, do not chase an “optimal” account. Choose the standard account mode unless you specifically want Ironman restrictions, learn the map and interface, then pick one quest or activity that sounds enjoyable. Old School RuneScape (OSRS) is deliberately open-ended: your first session is about becoming comfortable and choosing a direction, not following a mandatory leveling order.
What you are getting into
OSRS is a sandbox massively multiplayer online game. Jagex describes it as being about “adventure, self-discovery and most importantly: carving your very own path.” That design has an important consequence for beginners: there is no universally correct first skill, quest sequence or money-making route.

You can begin for free. Membership is an optional expansion that adds nine skills, hundreds of additional quests, exclusive bosses and raids, a larger map and more bank space. The available offer and price depend on your region and can change, so check the current official game listing before paying rather than relying on an old price quoted in a guide.

Choose your account mode before leaving Tutorial Island
Account mode is the one beginner decision with a firm deadline. Jagex says Ironman status can be selected only on Tutorial Island. If you leave as a standard account, you cannot later turn that character into an Ironman through the same selection process.
| Mode | Trading and economy | Death or storage rules | Who should choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | Unrestricted access to player trading and the Grand Exchange. | Uses the ordinary account rules rather than Ironman restrictions. | The best default for a first character when you want to learn with the fewest artificial limits. |
| Ironman | Cannot trade with other players or buy from the Grand Exchange. | You must obtain and progress through your own resources. | Players who deliberately want a self-sufficient, mostly solo challenge. |
| Hardcore Ironman | Has the regular Ironman trading restrictions. | Its one-life status is lost on death; the character continues as a regular Ironman afterward. | Experienced players who understand the game and want death to carry an additional account consequence. |
| Ultimate Ironman | Has Ironman trading restrictions. | Cannot use a bank, making inventory and item management a central challenge. | Highly experienced players seeking a specialised challenge. Jagex labels this mode “NOT RECOMMENDED FOR NEW PLAYERS.” |
| Group Ironman | Designed for a team of two to five; group members can trade and use shared storage under the mode’s rules. | Progress is organised around the group rather than one completely independent character. | A pre-arranged group that genuinely intends to play together. |
Choose standard if you are unsure. Selecting it does not stop you from imposing personal restrictions later, and it keeps trading, the Grand Exchange and help from other players available while you learn. Pick Ironman only because the restrictions themselves sound fun, not because a guide says it is more legitimate.
Finish Tutorial Island without trying to memorise everything
Tutorial Island introduces the core controls and account setup. You do not need perfect knowledge before leaving. Pay attention to the actions the tutorial asks you to perform, read the short explanations and treat the island as a safe place to discover where controls are located.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Confirm your account mode before completing the island.
- Notice how movement, combat, inventory, equipment and skills are opened from the control panel.
- Practice both normal clicks and right-clicks. Right-clicking reveals additional interactions with objects, players and non-player characters.
- Keep the official client or an official mobile app in mind for your first login; avoid downloading software from links posted by strangers.
When you arrive in the main world, resist the temptation to open every menu at once. You can return to each panel as a real task requires it.
Your first 30 minutes after Tutorial Island
Use this as a flexible sequence, not a speedrun. It gives you orientation before you commit to a larger goal.
- Look at the minimap. Click a nearby destination on the minimap to move there. This is often faster than trying to steer your character one click at a time.
- Open the world map. Search for a location when a quest, character or piece of equipment sends you somewhere unfamiliar. The search function is more reliable than guessing from memory.
- Check the control panel. Locate the combat options, skills, inventory and quests tabs. You only need to know where they are; mastery comes from using them repeatedly.
- Adjust a few comfort settings. Jagex’s new-player guidance suggests hiding roofs, enabling scroll-wheel zoom, setting player attack options to right-click and enabling player-killing skull prevention. These are starting suggestions, not obligations. Change them later if they do not suit you.
- Open the quest list. Filter the list and read the requirements or descriptions. Select an available quest whose premise or reward interests you rather than choosing solely by an internet ranking.
- Use the Activity Adviser if you are stuck. It recommends quests based on your current stats and completed quests, giving you a short list of plausible next actions.
- Try the in-game Wiki button. Jagex’s guide says it can search objects or open relevant entries for items, non-player characters and bosses. This is useful when you have a name but not a destination or explanation.
These steps establish a repeatable loop: notice a goal, check the map or quest journal, attempt the activity, then look up only the specific thing that blocked you.

How to choose a first goal
Start with a quest you actually want to see
Quests provide context, destinations and reasons to interact with the world. Pick one you can currently start and follow its journal. If a requirement is missing, the Activity Adviser or the in-game Wiki can show what to work toward. Abandoning a quest temporarily is fine; returning later is part of normal play.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Train a skill because it supports your goal
There is no beginner-only skill order. If a quest asks for a stat, train that stat; if you enjoy fighting, spend time learning combat; if gathering or making items is more appealing, follow that interest. Use the skill panel to understand what has changed and the in-game Wiki to identify an appropriate activity or location for your current level.
Do not interpret a community training route as a requirement. A route that is efficient on paper may be unpleasant if it removes the exploration and experimentation you wanted from a sandbox game.
Use one short-term target at a time
A useful first target might be finishing one quest, reaching a skill level required by a quest you like, learning how a combat encounter works or finding a location you saw on the map. Once you complete it, choose another. Keeping one active intention prevents the game’s enormous amount of content from becoming a list of obligations.
Controls and interface essentials
| Need | What to use | Beginner habit |
|---|---|---|
| Move somewhere nearby | Click the minimap or the ground in the main view. | Use the minimap for long, unobstructed movement and the main view when precision matters. |
| Find an unfamiliar place | Search the world map. | Search before asking someone else; the map often answers “where?” immediately. |
| See alternate actions | Right-click an object, character, item or player. | Use right-click whenever a normal click does not produce the action you expected. |
| Check what you can do | Combat, skills, inventory and quests panels in the control panel. | Open the relevant panel while performing the activity instead of memorising every icon. |
| Change your view | Camera controls and scroll-wheel zoom. | Zoom out when navigating and in when selecting a small object. |
On desktop, the mouse is central to movement, attacking, picking up items, changing equipment, using prayers and moving the camera. A standard mouse is sufficient; a gaming mouse is optional and provides no requirement for starting OSRS. On mobile, touch controls are supported, so you do not need to buy a peripheral.

Choose the platform that fits your routine
Jagex lists PC, Steam, iOS and Android versions, and says progression carries across PC and mobile. That means you can learn on a larger screen and continue elsewhere without creating a separate character, provided you sign in to the same account.
| Platform | Good fit when… | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| PC | You prefer a large screen, precise pointer control or longer sessions at a desk. | Use the official desktop client and download it from an official Jagex destination. |
| Steam | You already manage games through Steam and want that launch method. | Keep your account credentials and security settings under your control. |
| iOS or Android | You want to play away from a desk or use touch controls. | Install the official mobile app and expect the interface to be arranged for touch rather than a mouse. |
There is no research-backed reason in the available guidance to declare one platform faster or superior for every beginner. Choose based on where you will play and which input method feels comfortable.

How to get help without drowning in guides
Ask the game first
Read the quest journal for the immediate objective, search the world map for a destination and check the Activity Adviser for an achievable alternative. The in-game Wiki button is especially useful when you know the name of an item, character or boss but not its location or purpose.
Use established references for specific questions
When you need more detail, look for the official OSRS Wiki link provided through Jagex’s own guidance or use the game’s built-in search. Search for the exact problem—such as a quest requirement or an item interaction—instead of opening a massive “complete beginner guide” and trying to follow every recommendation.
Be careful with downloads and account requests
Jagex cautions players about phishing when installing third-party clients. Never enter your password on a page reached through an unsolicited message, and do not give another person account access because they promise faster progress. If a helper asks for credentials, leave the conversation.

Protect the account you are building
Use Jagex’s official account settings and support routes for account changes, membership questions and recovery problems. Set up an authenticator through the official account tools rather than through a third-party service. Keep your email account protected as well, because access to it can affect account recovery.
- Download the client or app only from an official Jagex-linked destination or the official app store listing.
- Ignore messages promising free currency, membership or rare items in exchange for a login.
- Check the address of a sign-in page before entering credentials.
- Do not install an “essential” plug-in sent by a stranger.
- Use the official support process if you suspect compromise instead of negotiating with the person who contacted you.
A low-pressure first-week plan
Session one: orientation
Leave Tutorial Island with the intended account mode, adjust only the settings that bother you, explore the minimap and world map, and complete one activity from the quest list. Stop when you understand the basic loop; there is no benefit in turning your first login into a marathon.
Sessions two and three: follow interest
Choose either another quest or a skill activity connected to something you want to do. Keep the Wiki available for individual questions. Notice which parts you enjoy—combat, exploration, collecting, making items or solving quest objectives—and let that preference guide the next target.
Later in the week: decide whether to expand
Once the free content has shown you how OSRS feels, decide whether membership’s additional skills, quests, bosses, raids, map and bank space are worth paying for you. If you are still unsure, continue free play; subscribing is not a prerequisite for learning the fundamentals.
Common beginner problems and fixes
“There is too much to do.”
Open the quest list, filter it and select one available objective. Ignore the rest until that task is finished. The Activity Adviser can narrow the choices further.
“I cannot find the place or person the quest mentions.”
Search the world map, then use the in-game Wiki button for the name. Check the quest journal for the latest instruction before assuming the objective changed.

“I clicked something, but my character did the wrong action.”
Right-click and select the intended interaction. Several objects and characters offer multiple actions, so a normal click may not always choose the one you want.
“A guide says I am training the wrong skill.”
There is no mandatory beginner order. Ask whether the skill supports your current goal and whether you enjoy the activity. If both answers are no, choose a different quest or activity.
“I chose standard mode but now want a challenge.”
You can adopt self-imposed restrictions or create a dedicated challenge character later. Standard mode remains the least restrictive learning environment because it preserves trading and Grand Exchange access.
“Someone offered to help if I install a client or share my login.”
Decline, close the conversation and use official support if necessary. A legitimate helper does not need your password, recovery codes or control of your computer.
What success looks like at the start
You are progressing appropriately if you can move around, locate the main panels, read a quest objective, find a destination on the map and solve a small problem with the in-game Wiki or Activity Adviser. You do not need high combat levels, expensive equipment, membership or a completed checklist to be “started.”
The only durable beginner rule is to make deliberate choices: standard mode for an unrestricted first character, official software and account tools for safety, one manageable goal at a time, and enough freedom to change direction when your interests change.
