Getting oriented means learning two ways to play: shape your town from above with the God Hand, then explore Albion at ground level by taking control of characters. The exact opening objectives and current key bindings are not established in the official material cited here, so use the prompts and settings in your installed build rather than relying on an unverified walkthrough.
How play works: the God Hand and ground-level control
The God Hand is your main way to interact with the world from an overhead perspective. You can shape towns, place and customize buildings, design items, and use abilities. You can also move around Albion from above or possess heroes, workers, animals, and other characters to experience the world in real time. The official Steam description presents these as complementary ways to play, rather than separate modes with unrelated progression.

For a first session, switch between the perspectives as your current objective requires: use the God Hand for town and world interactions, and take control of a character when you want to engage with Albion at ground level. The available official descriptions do not provide a complete keyboard or controller mapping, so a fixed key-by-key guide would risk being wrong for your build.
Find the current controls and prompts
Check the game’s settings and on-screen prompts for the controls available in your installed version, especially after an update. An official Update 1.1 announcement notes that an option to invert camera controls while in Possession mode was added; that change does not establish the rest of the current control map. The store page also says UI clarity is still being refined.

Building your first town
Building is about choosing where structures go, customizing them, and organizing the people who use them. You can hire and house workers, manage the workforce, and combine building types into multi-purpose spaces. The Steam listing says structures work immediately once built and that construction has no timers.
There is no verified optimal starter layout or resource sequence in the official material. Instead, learn what each available building does and what workforce it needs, then choose placements and combinations that support the tasks shown in your current objectives. That keeps your decisions tied to the needs of your playthrough without treating one unverified layout as universally best.
Following quests and exploring Albion
The official description confirms a broader loop that includes completing quests, searching for hidden treasures, exploring caves, and crafting weapons or armor to strengthen heroes. It does not publish the exact opening quest sequence or objectives. Read the active objective in your current game and follow its prompts; if you are looking for directions to a named first quest, confirm its wording in the current build before following a step-by-step guide. Masters of Albion is distinct from Albion Online, so advice for that other game does not answer questions about this one.
Prepare for night attacks
The game’s description says towns can face attacks at night. It identifies defensive structures, hero positioning, walls, and direct intervention as ways to prepare or respond. Use the needs of your town and current objectives to decide how to arrange defenses; the official material does not establish a single required or optimal setup.

What Early Access means for new players
Masters of Albion entered Steam Early Access on April 22, 2026. 22cans says the current Early Access version contains the complete Chapter One experience, while also describing the game as a work being developed alongside players: “We’ve brought Masters of Albion into Early Access to build it alongside players.” The developer specifically identifies combat feel and difficulty balance, alignment, optional quests, UI and HUD clarity, progression, and core systems as areas it expects to refine on the Steam Early Access page. Treat interface details and other evolving systems as version-sensitive, and check the current in-game information when something differs from an older guide.
