What kind of game is Kingdom Come: Deliverance?
This guide concerns the original Kingdom Come: Deliverance, not Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. The game follows Henry, a blacksmith’s son caught in a civil war. Its open world combines challenging combat, character development, and quests that can be resolved in more than one way.

The most important adjustment for a new player is accepting that Henry is not a trained hero at the start. Early failures are part of the progression curve. The publisher describes improvement through skills and perks, so your first objective is not to find a perfect build; it is to create opportunities to practice and gradually make Henry more capable.
Why the opening can feel unusually difficult
Many role-playing games give a new character reliable attacks and immediate access to powerful equipment. This game instead asks you to learn its systems while Henry is still developing. A missed attack, a poor decision, or an encounter that ends badly does not necessarily mean you selected the wrong approach. It may simply mean that the situation is ahead of your current preparation.

Use that design to set your pace. Read objectives, take advantage of instruction, and leave room for progress before treating a dangerous fight as a test you must pass immediately.
Your first-hours roadmap
1. Follow the opening story toward Rattay
Let the opening narrative establish the situation and lead you toward Rattay. According to a 2018 PC Gamer beginner guide, reaching Rattay opens additional early-game instruction and resources, including combat practice with Captain Bernard. That guide is useful orientation, but it is not a guarantee that every detail is unchanged across every later version or platform.
Do not interpret the early story as a race. Move through the required objectives while observing how dialogue, travel, equipment, and encounters work. The purpose of this stretch is to give you context and a foundation for the systems you will use for the rest of the game.
2. Train before seeking difficult fights
When Captain Bernard becomes available for training, use that opportunity before relying on combat in the wider world. Training is valuable even if you intend to play primarily through stealth or distance, because it helps you understand what a melee confrontation demands when avoidance fails.
Repeat practice until you can recognize when an encounter is becoming unsafe. You do not need to master every technique at once. Aim first for calm decision-making: identify the threat, choose whether to engage, and withdraw when your preparation is inadequate.
3. Add optional content at a controlled pace
Once the opening pressure eases, mix story objectives with side content. Optional activities give you lower-pressure situations in which to learn movement, dialogue, equipment upkeep, and the consequences of choices. There is no evidence that one universal side-quest order is mandatory or optimal, so choose activities according to your confidence and the amount of structure you want.
A first-session checklist
- Complete the opening objectives instead of wandering into every hostile situation.
- Reach the Rattay portion of the story and look for the available instruction.
- Practice with Captain Bernard before treating combat as your default solution.
- Check your food, equipment condition, and available saving options before setting out.
- Read each objective and note whether dialogue, stealth, distance, or melee could solve it.
- Use optional content to build familiarity, not to force a fixed route.
How to approach combat as a beginner
Think in terms of preparation, not reflexes
The publisher presents distance, stealth, and melee as legitimate ways to approach combat. That means a successful encounter can begin before anyone attacks. Ask whether you have enough information, whether the terrain or situation favors you, and whether avoiding the confrontation serves the objective better.

Early combat should be treated as a learning loop:
- Assess. Decide whether the encounter is required, avoidable, or better postponed.
- Choose an approach. Select stealth, distance, or melee according to the situation and your comfort.
- Commit carefully. Once engaged, concentrate on survival and clear decisions rather than experimenting with every option at once.
- Review the outcome. If you lose, identify whether the problem was preparation, positioning, equipment condition, or a decision to engage too soon.
- Practice deliberately. Return to training or a safer activity and apply one lesson before trying a harder encounter.
Choose an approach that matches your tolerance for risk
| Approach | When it suits a beginner | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Stealth | You want to avoid a direct contest and are willing to observe, wait, and use the situation to your advantage. | It depends on patience and may stop being viable if you are discovered. |
| Distance | You prefer to create space and reduce the time spent in close combat. | You still need a plan for when an enemy closes the distance or the environment limits your options. |
| Melee | You want direct practice and are prepared to improve through training and repeated attempts. | It exposes a novice Henry to the most immediate risk, especially before you understand the system. |
These are not permanent character choices. Character development is built around improving skills and earning perks, so you can refine your preferred style as Henry develops. Begin with the approach that lets you make deliberate decisions, then broaden your options as your confidence grows.
What to do after a defeat
A defeat is useful only if you convert it into a change. Before attempting the same situation again, ask:
- Was the fight avoidable or did the objective actually require it?
- Did you enter with damaged or poorly maintained equipment?
- Did you have a clear escape or withdrawal plan?
- Were you experimenting while already under pressure?
- Would training, a different approach, or more story progress make the encounter more appropriate later?
Do not respond to every loss by changing your entire direction. Change one factor, test it, and keep the parts of your approach that worked.
How to handle quests without chasing a perfect route
Expect multiple solutions
The publisher’s feature description says: “Solve quests in multiple ways, then face the consequences of your decisions.” Treat that as a central rule, not a warning that you are constantly making irreversible mistakes. A quest can present alternatives in conversation, investigation, stealth, or combat, and your choice can shape what happens next.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Because the available evidence does not establish a complete spoiler-free route or a universal side-quest order, avoid guides that claim every player must follow the same sequence. Your priorities may be survival, role-playing, exploration, or efficient story progress, and the game’s structure supports different preferences.
Read objectives before acting
When a quest updates, pause long enough to understand what is being requested. Separate the stated objective from your assumptions about how it must be completed. If the objective does not explicitly demand a fight, consider whether dialogue, stealth, or distance could achieve the same purpose.
Pay attention to the people involved and the consequences implied by your conversations. A choice that appears faster may create a later complication; a slower investigation may preserve alternatives. There is no sourced basis for calling one choice the correct answer in every playthrough.

Main story or optional exploration?
| If you want… | Emphasize… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A clear structure | Opening-story objectives and the next available instruction. | They provide context and help you reach the early combat guidance around Rattay. |
| More time to learn | Manageable optional activities after the opening. | They let you practice decisions and upkeep without forcing every major challenge immediately. |
| A role-playing-focused run | Dialogue, consequences, and choices that fit Henry’s situation. | The game is built around decisions that affect how quests unfold. |
Keep a personal record of decisions only if that improves your enjoyment. Reloading every uncertain conversation can turn a flexible quest system into a checklist. If you prefer to live with consequences, make a save when the game permits it and continue without trying to engineer a single approved outcome.
Survival and upkeep: the systems that quietly decide your success
Manage hunger without treating food as a race
The beginner guide discusses hunger penalties as well as penalties for overeating. The practical lesson is moderation: pay attention to Henry’s condition, eat thoughtfully, and do not assume that consuming more is always safer. Exact effects and availability can depend on the game version and context, so use the visible state of your character as the immediate guide rather than relying on a rigid schedule.
Before leaving for a long objective, make sure you have considered when you will next be able to address hunger. If you are already suffering a penalty, handle that need before adding a difficult fight or time-sensitive decision.
Repair equipment before damage becomes an emergency
Equipment wear and repair are part of the early survival advice. Inspect your gear before demanding encounters and repair it before its condition becomes a problem. A fight that feels impossible may be made worse by equipment you neglected, but repair is not a substitute for training or choosing an appropriate encounter.
- Check equipment condition when returning from activity, not only after something goes wrong.
- Repair before a planned high-risk objective whenever the option is available.
- Do not assume a newly acquired item is automatically ready for every encounter.
- If a fight still goes badly after maintenance, reconsider the approach and your level of preparation.
Understand the available saving options
The beginner guide identifies beds and Saviour Schnapps among the game’s saving options. Their availability and exact use can depend on circumstances and version, so learn which options are currently accessible to Henry instead of assuming that one method is always present.
Save before a decision or expedition when the game gives you a sensible opportunity, particularly if you are testing an unfamiliar system. Avoid promising yourself a fixed save interval that the game may not support. The useful habit is to maintain a recent recovery point before a meaningful risk.
A preparation check before leaving safety
- Read the objective and decide whether the next activity is likely to involve danger.
- Check hunger and address an active penalty or the risk of overeating.
- Inspect equipment condition and repair what you reasonably can.
- Confirm which saving option is available in your current circumstances.
- Choose stealth, distance, melee, or postponement before the encounter forces the decision.
Progression: improve Henry without chasing a perfect build
Let practice shape your character
The publisher describes progression through improving skills and earning perks. You do not need to identify a definitive build at the beginning. Instead, notice which situations you enjoy and which weaknesses repeatedly cause trouble. Use training and ordinary play to strengthen those areas.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If you prefer direct fights, give yourself enough structured practice to make melee less reactive. If you prefer avoiding fights, invest attention in observation, patience, and planning. If you use a mixture, treat each successful approach as part of the same developing character rather than as evidence that you must specialize immediately.
Do not confuse a perk with a solution to every problem
A new perk can improve a chosen direction, but it does not remove the need to read objectives, maintain equipment, manage hunger, or judge risk. Progression works best when you pair character development with better decisions. A stronger Henry who repeatedly enters unsuitable fights can still fail; a cautious player can often achieve more by choosing the right situation.
Reputation and consequences
Actions can influence how interactions feel, but the detailed reputation recommendations circulating in community discussion are anecdotal advice from an individual player, not official requirements. Use reputation as a reason to consider how you behave in the world, not as proof that one hidden routine is mandatory.
When a decision affects another person or group, think about the immediate objective and the longer-term relationship it may create. You cannot eliminate every consequence while preserving a meaningful choice. Decide what kind of Henry you want to play, then accept that the world may respond to that decision.

Exploration is most useful when it supports learning. After the opening story has established your direction and you have access to early instruction, explore at a pace that leaves room for recovery and preparation. If an area repeatedly overwhelms you, mark it mentally as a place to revisit rather than treating the resistance as a command to push harder.

Common beginner mistakes and practical fixes
Mistake: treating Henry like an experienced warrior
Fix: assume that early combat requires training. Use Captain Bernard’s instruction around Rattay, then test your understanding in lower-pressure situations before escalating.

Mistake: making melee the automatic answer
Fix: remember that the game supports stealth and distance as well as melee. Decide which approach suits the objective and your preparation before committing.
Mistake: ignoring hunger until a difficult moment
Fix: check your condition during routine preparation. Hunger penalties and overeating penalties both matter, so aim for a measured habit rather than emergency eating.
Mistake: waiting until equipment fails before repairing it
Fix: inspect and maintain gear before risky activities. If the encounter remains beyond you, change your timing or method instead of assuming maintenance alone will solve it.

Mistake: searching for one mandatory quest order
Fix: read each objective, consider the available approaches, and accept that decisions can have consequences. The game’s official description supports multiple solutions rather than one universal route.
Mistake: treating every community tip as a rule
Fix: separate official design information from personal advice. A forum recommendation may describe one player’s successful routine, but it is not automatically a requirement for every character or version.
A practical decision framework for any difficult situation
When you reach an unfamiliar objective, use this sequence:
- Clarify the goal. Identify what the quest actually asks you to accomplish.
- List the alternatives. Consider dialogue, stealth, distance, melee, or postponement.
- Check readiness. Review hunger, equipment condition, training, and saving options.
- Choose the lowest-risk method that still fits your preferred play style. A cautious solution is not mandatory if you deliberately want the challenge of direct combat.
- Accept the result. Choices have consequences, and a different outcome is not automatically a failed playthrough.
- Learn from the next attempt. If the result is unacceptable to you, change one preparation or approach rather than restarting blindly.
Ten habits that make the opening smoother
- Remember that Henry starts as a novice.
- Follow the opening story toward Rattay before judging the entire combat system.
- Use Captain Bernard’s training when it becomes available.
- Practice before committing to dangerous fights.
- Choose between stealth, distance, and melee according to the situation.
- Read objectives instead of assuming every quest requires combat.
- Expect decisions to produce consequences.
- Watch hunger and avoid both neglect and overeating.
- Repair equipment before a demanding objective.
- Use available beds or Saviour Schnapps and keep a sensible recovery point.
What success looks like in the first phase
You are ready to move beyond the opening-learning phase when you can explain why you are taking a fight, identify at least one alternative, check your condition before leaving, and recover from a loss without changing your entire plan. You do not need flawless combat or a complete perk plan. You need a repeatable process that turns each encounter into information.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe original game rewards that patience. Henry’s skills and perks develop over time, quests allow different solutions, and the systems that initially feel like obstacles become tools for deciding how you want to play. Follow the story far enough to access instruction, practice before forcing difficult battles, and let your choices shape the journey rather than searching for a single perfect route.
