The game released on Steam on October 9, 2026, and its official FAQ says a successful run takes about an hour once you can complete one.
This guide covers the current information published for the Steam release, including the four classes, minimum PC specifications, Steam Deck support, the safest first-session routine, and the details that remain version-dependent. Exact keyboard bindings, controller layouts, tutorial steps, and available difficulty modes are not established by the official material reviewed here, so check the released game’s own settings and tutorial rather than relying on pre-release control diagrams.

What 100 Rogues is before you launch
100 Rogues combines traditional roguelike rules with tactical RPG progression. You move on a grid, take turns with enemies, make decisions about abilities and equipment, and face procedurally generated dungeon layouts. A run is designed to teach you through consequences: an apparently safe square can become a trap, while a difficult encounter may become manageable if you use terrain, targeting and consumables correctly.
The game is single-player and lists turn-based tactics, grid-based movement, class-based play and procedural generation among its Steam features. The Steam store page also advertises more than 50 unique monsters. Those systems make the first objective different from simply reaching the end: learn what information the interface gives you, how far threats can move, and which resources are worth spending now.

The official FAQ at 100-rogues.com/faqs estimates a successful run at about one hour. That is the length of a run you finish, not a promise that a new player will succeed in an hour. The same FAQ presents mastery as something built over multiple attempts, which is the right expectation for your first session.
Check the Steam edition and your hardware
The simplest way to evaluate the game is to install its PC demo from the Steam listing: Steam store page for 100 Rogues. Use the demo to learn the interface and decide whether deliberate, turn-by-turn play suits you before purchasing the full release.

These are the Windows requirements shown by Steam, not results from independent hardware testing. If the game does not launch, first confirm that Windows is 64-bit, update your graphics driver, verify the installation in Steam, and check the game’s own display settings.
SteamOS and Steam Deck
Steam lists a separate SteamOS/Linux configuration: SteamOS Holo 3.7.05, a Zen 2 4-core/8-thread processor, 16 GB RAM, 8 RDNA 2 compute units and 350 MB of storage. The listing says the game is tested on Steam Deck. Those specifications describe the store’s stated target configuration; they do not guarantee identical battery life, frame rate or control behavior on every Deck model.
On either Windows or SteamOS, open the game’s settings before your first serious run. Confirm display scaling, audio, text readability and the currently shown keyboard or controller bindings. The released build’s exact bindings are not documented in the official pages, so do not assume a key from an older video or pre-release discussion.

Your first 15 minutes: a safe startup routine
- Install the demo or full game from Steam. Open the 100 Rogues store page, choose the demo option if you are trying it, and launch it from your Steam Library. Let the opening tutorial or prompts run once without skipping so you can identify movement, waiting, attacking and inventory controls in the current build.
- Read the interface before moving. Locate your health, resource or energy display, ability bar, equipment slots, map or dungeon indicators, and any enemy information shown when you select a tile or creature. Pause on each icon until you understand what it reports. If a tooltip is unclear, test it in a safe room rather than during a crowded fight.
- Take the first encounter slowly. Move one square at a time and watch how enemies respond. Notice whether an enemy advances, attacks from range, changes position or waits when you wait. You are mapping the turn economy, not trying to clear the floor at maximum speed.
- Spend one resource deliberately. Use an ability when you can explain what it changes: damage, distance, positioning, a buff, a debuff or an extra action. Then inspect the result. Learning the consequence of one action is more valuable than firing every ability without observing its range and timing.
- Open and use an item before the inventory fills. Identify what restores health or energy, what can be equipped, and what can be thrown. The game gives several items more than one role, so an item that looks defensive may also solve a positioning or area-damage problem.
- End the session with notes. After a defeat, write down the enemy, room shape, ability or item that caused the problem, and the alternative you could test next run. This turns a random loss into a specific experiment.
Developer Wesley Paugh wrote before release that the intended tutorial should provide enough guidance for the interface to stop obstructing play without removing the need to build knowledge. That September 2025 statement describes design intent, not a guarantee that the October 2026 build uses the same tutorial sequence.
Choose a class by the problem you want to solve
There are four playable classes. Their starting identities are useful orientation, not permanent build restrictions: found equipment and skill choices can pull a character in an unexpected direction.

For a completely new player, choose the class whose decision-making sounds most interesting rather than searching for a universally best choice. The game is built around adapting a run to its drops and encounters, so your first class teaches you one way to read the dungeon and your next class exposes another.
How to think through every turn
Position before damage
Grid movement makes distance a resource. Before selecting an attack, ask where you will stand after the action and which enemies can reach that square on their next turn. Keep a retreat tile available when entering an unfamiliar room. If a corridor, doorway or obstacle limits the number of enemies that can attack you, use it to reduce the fight’s effective size.
Look for situational bonuses
The Steam description specifically warns that ability effects can have situational bonuses. Holy Fires is the clearest example: it gains damage for each target hit. The correct play is therefore not always “avoid being surrounded.” Sometimes you can let enemies cluster, trigger the multi-target effect, and then escape before the remaining threats act. That is a calculated setup, not a rule that surrounding yourself is safe.

Read across skill trees
Do not assume that a class’s opening theme dictates every later choice. A Wizard who finds a high-value dagger may get more from melee abilities than from forcing every upgrade into spells. A Scoundrel who can reliably hold enemies at range may convert speed into extra safe attacks. Compare the skill’s actual range, cost, target conditions and follow-up position with the gear on your current run.

Spend turns to gain information
In a turn-based game, waiting can be an action with a purpose. Use a safe square to see whether an enemy advances, to let a cooldown or resource state change, or to draw one opponent into a better position. Do not wait in a tile that allows several enemies to reach you simultaneously unless you have already calculated the exchange.
Items are tools, not trophies
100 Rogues gives consumables and equipment multiple possible uses. An energy potion, for example, may heal you, help you retreat, or be thrown for area damage according to the Steam description. Treat the item as a decision about the current room rather than as an object whose value comes from carrying it to the end.
When to use a consumable
- Use healing or energy restoration before a resource shortfall becomes an emergency. A potion that lets you take a controlled fight is more valuable than one held while an enemy forces you into a corner.
- Throw an item when area damage changes the action economy. If one throw can remove or weaken several threats, it may prevent more damage than a single-target attack.
- Use a retreat-oriented effect when the room is unwinnable on its current terms. Escaping to a better tile is a successful tactical action, not wasted progress.
- Equip gear that solves the next encounter. Compare its practical range, survivability and synergy with your skills rather than waiting indefinitely for a theoretical perfect loadout.
Paugh’s September 2025 difficulty update emphasized item and equipment management and encouraged frequent use of thrown items. Because that advice came from a pre-release build, it should guide your experimentation rather than be treated as confirmation of current key bindings, item statistics or balance.
Explore side areas when they change the odds
Dungeons contain side areas with shortcuts, reprieves, secrets and ways to bypass the standard descent. Exploration is not automatically correct: entering an optional room can expose you to another encounter. The useful question is whether the route gives you a tactical reason to leave the main path.

Take a side route when
- the direct descent leads toward a fight you cannot presently control;
- a shortcut reduces the number of dangerous rooms you must cross;
- a reprieve gives you time to recover, reorganize or inspect your equipment;
- a secret or alternate passage offers information or resources that improve your next engagement.
Skip it when
You are already carrying the tools needed for the next room and the side area would force a low-health character into an unknown fight. Roguelike exploration rewards curiosity, but survival lets you use what you have learned on later floors.

The official FAQ presents mastery as a process of learning across runs. Use that structure deliberately instead of judging the game by whether your first character reaches the end.
- Run one: interface and movement. Learn selection, movement, waiting, targeting, inventory and the information displayed for enemies. Pick the class whose basic identity is easiest for you to understand.
- Run two: one tactical theme. Focus on positioning around a doorway, multi-target effects, ranged spacing or retreat. Record which enemy behavior invalidates your plan.
- Run three: resource timing. Spend potions, thrown items and equipment when they change a fight. Compare the result with the previous runs in which you hoarded them.
- Later runs: adaptation. Change your skill choices when the equipment or room layout supports a different plan. Test one meaningful variation at a time so you can tell what improved.
The developer has discussed an Easy mode involving starting statistics, regeneration and a change to the second boss’s enemy spawners. That discussion is from a September 2025 pre-release post, so the currently selectable modes and their balance must be confirmed in the released game rather than assumed from that description.
Common first-run mistakes and their fixes
Rushing because the game is turn-based
Symptom: You cross open ground, trigger several enemies and discover that every retreat square is covered. Fix: Move one tile at a time in unfamiliar rooms, identify the escape route first, and approach a fight from a position that limits the number of attackers.
Using every ability as soon as it is available
Symptom: Your strongest attack is unavailable when an enemy cluster appears. Fix: Check the ability’s target conditions and save it for the situation that gives it a bonus, such as a multi-target hit, unless spending it now prevents more damage.
Hoarding potions and thrown items
Symptom: You die with a full inventory. Fix: Ask whether the item can restore a resource, create distance or damage a group now. If yes, use it when that benefit changes the fight rather than waiting for an undefined future emergency.
Following a class stereotype too rigidly
Symptom: You reject a useful weapon or skill because it does not match the class label. Fix: Evaluate the found gear and the skill-tree interaction. The official Wizard-and-dagger example exists precisely to show that a run can cross its starting archetype.
Assuming pre-release instructions are current
Symptom: A keyboard shortcut or difficulty option mentioned in an old post is missing. Fix: Check the current game’s settings, tutorial and Steam build. The developer blog predates the October 2026 release, and the official pages do not establish the final bindings or mode list.

- Install the Steam demo or full game and confirm it launches on your system.
- Open settings and identify the current movement, targeting, inventory and pause controls.
- Inspect health, energy, ability, equipment and enemy-information displays before the first serious fight.
- Choose one of the four classes according to the tactical style you want to practice.
- In each room, identify a retreat square before attacking.
- Test one ability’s range, cost and situational effect deliberately.
- Use at least one consumable when it improves the current tactical position.
- Check side routes for shortcuts, reprieves or secrets when the main descent is dangerous.
- After defeat, write down one enemy behavior and one alternative action to test.
Where to confirm current information
For the live requirements, demo availability and platform notes, use the official Steam listing. The developer’s site is 100-rogues.com, its run-length and introductory information are collected in the official FAQ, and historical development commentary appears on the developer blog. For controls, tutorials and difficulty choices, the game’s own released settings and on-screen prompts are the authoritative reference.
