To get smoother footage with an Insta360 Flow, mount and center your phone securely, choose the gimbal mode for the movement you want, and walk slowly with bent knees. The gimbal stabilizes pan, tilt, and roll, but it cannot erase every footstep or bump; steady movement and the right tracking setup still matter. This guide covers the setup, movement, modes, tracking, and compatibility checks that make a practical difference.
Set up the phone before you shoot
A secure, correctly positioned phone is the foundation for stable footage. Insta360’s first-use guide describes a magnetic phone clamp: center it on the phone, align the phone’s lens as directed, attach the clamp to the gimbal, and then unfold the gimbal. Follow the setup illustrations for your specific model rather than assuming every phone or Flow generation fits identically. Insta360 Flow first-use guide.

Take a moment to complete this setup before you begin a take. A phone that is not held securely, or a clamp positioned incorrectly, is a setup problem—not something to solve by changing modes or walking more carefully. The first-use instructions are the reference for where the clamp belongs and how the lens should line up. Check the arrangement against those illustrations instead of guessing from another phone or another Flow model.
- Check that your phone model is supported and that it fits the clamp securely. Consult Insta360’s Flow Series mobile phone compatibility information before relying on a particular control or app feature.
- Center the magnetic clamp on the phone and align the lens according to the first-use instructions.
- Attach the clamped phone to the gimbal, then unfold it as instructed.
- Before recording, confirm the phone is firmly held and the camera lens is not obstructed by the clamp.
Compatibility is not only a question of whether the phone can be mounted. Phone model and operating system can affect available controls and app features, so verify the exact combination you intend to use. That check matters particularly if your shot depends on a phone control, an app function, or a tracking option. A feature described for one phone or operating system should not be assumed to work the same way on another.

If you plan to use Deep Track or another Insta360 app function, install and connect through the Insta360 app before the moment you need to film. The activation guide says Bluetooth and Wi-Fi should be enabled and that you should follow firmware prompts in the app. This is not a substitute for correct physical mounting: treat app activation and the clamp setup as two separate parts of getting ready. Check that the phone and gimbal are connected as the app requires, and resolve any prompt before starting a shot you cannot easily repeat.
Walk smoothly instead of relying on stabilization alone
Insta360 recommends bending your knees and walking slowly—often called a “ninja walk”—to reduce the jolts that reach the camera. The company’s tip is to bend your knees and move at a slow pace for the smoothest possible videos. Keep your steps deliberate, avoid sudden changes of direction, and use your arms to guide the gimbal rather than swinging it sharply. Insta360’s Flow smooth-footage tips describe this walking technique.
Think of the gimbal and your movement as working together. The stabilizer controls pan, tilt, and roll, but your body still determines how abruptly the camera is carried through space. A slow, controlled walk gives the gimbal less sudden movement to respond to; a quick step, abrupt stop, or bump can still be visible. Three-axis stabilization is not a promise that every footstep disappears, so do not judge a take only by whether the phone is attached to a stabilizer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before a moving take, decide where it starts and ends. Begin walking gently, maintain a pace you can sustain, and avoid turning sharply just because the gimbal can follow. If you need to change direction, make the change deliberately. For a pan or turn, ease into the movement and ease out at the end rather than starting or stopping with a snap. These habits are useful whether the camera is tracking a subject or simply recording the scene.
If a take looks unsettled, first consider whether your own pace or direction changes were abrupt. Insta360 recommends slowing down and bending the knees; it does not provide a quantified guarantee or claim that a particular speed removes all shake. Use those recommendations as technique, not as a promise that the gimbal will hide every bump.
Choose the gimbal mode for the shot
Flow-series modes change how the gimbal responds to handle movement. Select a mode based on the motion you want, not simply because one sounds more advanced. If you want a horizontal sweep, you need a mode suited to horizontal movement; if you want the phone to keep pointing in one direction while you move the handle, a mode that holds direction is more appropriate. Insta360 documents the modes in its Flow Series gimbal-mode guide.

| Mode | How it responds | Useful for |
|---|---|---|
| Auto | Adapts to the shooting state. | General shooting when you want the gimbal to choose a suitable response. |
| Follow | Responds to vertical and horizontal handle movement. | Shots where you want the camera to follow deliberate changes in direction. |
| Pan Follow | Follows horizontal movement. | Horizontal pans or circling around a subject. |
| FPV | Follows movement on all three axes. | Creative shots that intentionally include handle rotation. |
| Lock | Keeps the phone’s direction fixed. | Moving the handle while keeping the camera pointed in the same direction. |
Auto is a reasonable starting point when you do not have a particular movement in mind and want the gimbal to adapt to the shooting state. It is not a guarantee that every shot will have the same camera response: it adapts rather than following one fixed movement rule. If you already know what the shot should do, choose the mode that describes that motion more directly.

Use it when you intend the camera to follow deliberate changes in direction. For example, if the planned framing needs to move as you guide the handle up, down, or horizontally, Follow matches that intent. Because the mode responds to more than horizontal movement, it is distinct from Pan Follow.
Pan Follow follows horizontal movement and is the direct choice for a horizontal pan or for circling around a subject. It can help make the camera’s response match a deliberate sideways sweep. It does not replace a controlled hand movement: a pan that starts suddenly or changes speed sharply can still look abrupt. Pair the mode with a slow, intentional turn.
FPV follows movement on all three axes. Choose it when handle rotation is part of the creative shot, not when you want to suppress every rotational movement. That distinction is important: a mode that follows the handle’s movement on all three axes serves a different purpose from a mode that keeps the phone’s direction fixed.
Lock keeps the phone’s direction fixed while you move the handle. It suits a shot where the camera should keep pointing in the same direction as the gimbal itself moves. If the shot should instead follow your horizontal turn, Pan Follow may be the better match. These are different camera intentions, so decide whether the frame should stay pointed or travel with your movement before recording.

Use Deep Track when the camera needs to follow a subject
Deep Track requires the Insta360 app. Use the app to select a person, animal, or object, or use the trigger or gesture options described in the support guide. Keep the subject clear and large enough in the frame: Insta360 recommends that the target occupy more than one-tenth of the frame and advises staying within five meters for the Flow models covered by its guide. These are manufacturer recommendations, not independent performance guarantees. Insta360 Flow Series Deep Track guide.
Tracking is most useful when you want the camera to follow a chosen subject rather than merely record a direction you control yourself. It still depends on a suitable target and setup. Before recording, frame the subject clearly, make sure it is large enough according to the manufacturer’s guidance, and stay within the recommended distance for the models included in that guide. The distance and target-size figures are operating recommendations; they should not be presented as a guarantee that every subject will remain tracked in every scene.
- Choose a person, animal, or object that is visible and unobstructed when tracking begins.
- Keep the target larger than one-tenth of the frame, following Insta360’s recommendation.
- Stay within five meters for the Flow models covered by the support guide.
- Move smoothly so the gimbal has time to follow the subject without abrupt changes.
- Be aware that motion blur can make small, fast-moving subjects harder to track reliably.
Small, fast-moving subjects are a particular challenge because motion blur can make them harder to track reliably. If the subject is moving quickly, avoid assuming that selecting it once guarantees continuous tracking. Keep the subject in view, make your own movements deliberate, and understand that the guide describes limitations as well as setup advice. A larger, clearly visible target within the recommended distance is a better starting point than a tiny subject moving rapidly through the frame.
If you want to use app functions such as Deep Track, connect and activate the gimbal in the Insta360 app. The activation instructions call for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to be enabled and say to follow any firmware prompts in the app. Check your phone’s compatibility before treating an app feature as available on your device. Deep Track is not a feature to assume will work directly in every phone camera app: the support material identifies the Insta360 app as a requirement.
Flow Pro’s DockKit native tracking is a separate compatibility consideration. Insta360 says those native tracking features apply to iPhone and iOS use. Android users do not get those same native tracking features in the iPhone camera and third-party iOS apps; Insta360 app features may be available subject to compatibility. In other words, distinguish native tracking from tracking through the Insta360 app, and check the phone-specific information for the exact feature you plan to use.

Do not choose a model based only on its name or release date. Start with your phone and operating system, then check whether the specific controls and tracking behavior you need are supported. If you want native tracking, confirm that the model and phone combination supports it. If you are content to use tracking through Insta360’s app, check compatibility for that app feature instead. The cited information establishes that support varies; it does not provide a universal feature promise for every phone in a generation.

Flow documentation lists a built-in tripod and a 1/4-inch mounting point. That means a separate tripod is not automatically necessary; consider additional support only if your particular fixed-position setup requires it. A replacement magnetic clamp is relevant if the original is missing or damaged, but confirm that a replacement matches the exact Flow model before ordering. Insta360 Flow product introduction.
For a stationary setup, first consider whether the built-in tripod meets the need. An external support may be relevant for a particular fixed-position arrangement, but it is not an automatic purchase to make just because you own a gimbal. Similarly, do not buy a replacement clamp unless the original is missing or damaged, and do not assume a clamp for one Flow generation will fit another. Confirm that replacement compatibility matches the precise model.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get smoother footage with an Insta360 Flow?
Secure and center the phone in the magnetic clamp, align the lens as shown in the first-use guide, choose a mode suited to the shot, and walk slowly with bent knees. Insta360 recommends the “ninja walk” technique. The gimbal stabilizes pan, tilt, and roll, but it does not eliminate every footstep or bump.
Which Flow mode should I use for a horizontal pan?
Pan Follow is suited to horizontal pans and circling around a subject. Follow responds to vertical and horizontal handle movement, while Lock keeps the phone’s direction fixed. Choose based on whether you want the camera to follow a turn or hold its direction.
Does Deep Track work without the Insta360 app?
No. The support guide says Deep Track requires the Insta360 app. The activation instructions call for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to be enabled and say to follow firmware prompts in the app. Confirm your phone’s compatibility before relying on the feature.
How far away should a Deep Track subject be?
For the Flow models covered by its guide, Insta360 recommends staying within five meters and having the target occupy more than one-tenth of the frame. These are manufacturer operating recommendations, not independent guarantees. Small, fast-moving subjects may be harder to track because of motion blur.
Can Flow Pro use native tracking with an Android phone?
Flow Pro’s Apple DockKit native tracking features apply to iPhone and iOS use. Android users do not get those same native tracking features in the iPhone camera and third-party iOS apps. Insta360-app features may be available, subject to compatibility; check the exact phone and feature list.
Do I need to buy a separate tripod or phone clamp?
Not necessarily. Flow documentation lists a built-in tripod and a 1/4-inch mounting point, so an external support is only relevant if your fixed-position setup needs one. Consider a replacement magnetic clamp only if yours is missing or damaged, and confirm it matches the exact Flow model.
Which Flow model should I choose?
Compare phone and operating-system compatibility, whether you need native tracking or Insta360-app tracking, which tracking features are supported, and whether the included accessories suit your setup. The official product information does not establish current prices or a best-value model, so check current details for your precise phone and intended features.
