How to Get Sharper Portraits with an OM SYSTEM OM-D or PEN Camera and a Fast Lens

For a sharper portrait, put a small autofocus target on the subject’s near eye, confirm the camera’s focus indication, and choose the autofocus mode for the person’s movement. Start around f/2.8–f/4 when you want both eyes and more of the face sharp; open a fast lens to f/1.8 when light or background separation matters more. Use at least 1/125 second for a still adult and about 1/250 second for an animated subject, then raise ISO or add light as needed. Stabilization can reduce your own camera shake, but it cannot freeze a moving person.

The exact AF targets, face/eye options, focus aids and stabilization controls differ between OM SYSTEM OM-D and PEN generations. Treat the settings below as a reliable starting method, then verify menu names and tripod guidance in the manual for your specific body.

A practical setup that works before you change anything else

  1. Mount the fast lens and set the camera to aperture priority or manual exposure.
  2. Select a single, small AF target and place it over the near eye. If your body has face/eye detection, enable it only after checking that it can select the intended person.
  3. Use S-AF for a posed person. Switch to C-AF when the subject is walking, leaning or otherwise changing distance from the camera.
  4. Begin at f/2.8 to f/4 for a head-and-shoulders portrait. Use f/1.8 when you need more light or stronger background blur and can place focus precisely.
  5. Set a shutter speed of about 1/125 second for a still adult, or 1/250 second or faster for animated movement.
  6. Half-press the shutter, check the AF confirmation mark and green target, then take several frames without changing the subject’s position.
  7. Zoom in on the eyes during playback. If the eyes are soft, correct focus target or focusing mode first; if the entire subject is blurred from movement, increase shutter speed.

This sequence separates the two kinds of blur that are often confused: camera shake caused by your hands and subject motion caused by the person. In-body stabilization addresses the first, not the second.

Put the AF target on the eye you want sharp

Use a small target for deliberate portraits

OM SYSTEM’s camera guidance instructs photographers to place the AF frame on the subject, half-press the shutter and verify the AF confirmation mark and green AF target. For a portrait, place that frame on the near eye, because it is normally the most visible and the eye viewers notice first. A large automatic area can select an eyebrow, hair, glasses frame or the nearer cheek instead.

Move or shrink the target when your camera allows it. On supported bodies, the touchscreen can move the focus point directly to the eye; a four-way controller or arrow pad performs the same job when you are using the viewfinder. After moving the point, half-press again and make sure the confirmation indicator appears before completing the exposure.

Face and eye detection is useful, but not infallible

Some OM-D and PEN cameras offer face detection or a more specific eye-detection option. These modes can be convenient when the person is moving, but they may choose the wrong face in a group or jump to a high-contrast detail. Watch the active box rather than assuming the camera has selected the eye you intended. If it locks onto another person, return to a smaller single target or touch the correct face if your body supports touchscreen selection.

Recompose carefully after focus

With a very wide aperture, focusing and then swinging the camera substantially can move the eye outside the narrow focus plane. Keep the selected eye near the AF point when possible. If you must recompose, use a smaller movement, stop the lens down slightly, or focus again after framing.

Match S-AF, C-AF and manual focus to the subject

S-AF for a posed person

S-AF performs one focus acquisition when you half-press the shutter. It is the straightforward choice for a seated or standing subject who can remain still. It also gives you a clear moment to confirm the eye target before taking the frame.

C-AF for changing distance

C-AF repeatedly adjusts focus while the shutter button is half-pressed, which suits a person walking toward you, leaning forward, turning, or interacting with someone. Start with the AF point on the intended eye and keep it there. If tracking loses the subject, release and reacquire rather than allowing the camera to continue focusing on a background object.

Manual focus when autofocus hunts

Low contrast, backlighting, dim rooms and faces partly hidden by hair or a hat can make autofocus hesitate. OM SYSTEM’s E-M10 Mark III quick guide states: “Manual Focus is perfect for situations where it’s hard for the AF to focus.” That is manufacturer guidance, not an independent performance measurement.

Switch to manual focus when repeated AF attempts are less reliable than a deliberate adjustment. Use magnification or focus peaking if your particular body provides those aids. Magnification lets you inspect the eye at a larger view; peaking highlights edges that are near the focus plane. Confirm which aids and button assignments your model supports before the session.

Choose an aperture for the depth of face you need

A fast lens gives you a large maximum aperture, but the maximum opening is not automatically the sharpest or safest setting for a portrait. At f/1.8, the in-focus depth is narrow. If the face is turned, one eye may be sharp while the farther eye and nose soften. That look can be intentional, but it leaves little margin for a slightly misplaced AF point.

Aperture choice What it helps What to watch
f/1.8 More light and strong background separation Very narrow focus depth; eye placement and subject distance become critical
f/2.8–f/4 More of a head-and-shoulders face can remain sharp while the background still softens Requires more light or a higher ISO than f/1.8
Smaller than f/4 Greater depth for groups, deep poses or a face angled sharply away from camera May require slower shutter speed or higher ISO, and background blur is reduced

For a conventional head-and-shoulders portrait, f/2.8–f/4 is a useful starting range rather than a guaranteed optimum. Depth of field changes with framing distance, focal length, sensor format and the angle of the face. Stop down when both eyes need to be clear; open up when the background or available light is the priority and you can keep the AF point exactly on the near eye.

Set shutter speed for the person, not only the camera

Try 1/125 second for a still adult. Use approximately 1/250 second or faster for a person who is talking with expressive gestures, turning, or shifting position. These are practical starting points, not OM SYSTEM specifications or universal blur thresholds. Review the result at high magnification and increase the shutter speed if eyelashes, lips or hair show motion blur.

If the shutter speed you need makes the exposure too dark, open the aperture, raise ISO, add a light source, or combine those changes. Raising ISO can add noise, but a sharp, slightly noisy file is usually more useful than a clean file blurred by motion. In manual exposure, set the shutter and aperture for the movement and depth you want, then let Auto ISO handle changing light if your body’s implementation suits the situation.

Understand what in-body stabilization can and cannot do

Sensor-shift stabilization can reduce blur from your hands while you hold the camera. It does not stop a person’s head, hands or body from moving. A stabilized exposure at a slow speed may still show a soft eye if the subject moved during the exposure.

OM SYSTEM’s stabilization guidance also notes that stabilization cannot correct excessive shake or shake at the slowest usable shutter speed. A tripod is recommended in those circumstances. Tripod behavior is model-specific: support guidance for the E-M10 Mark III says to turn stabilization off when using a tripod, but that instruction should not be generalized to every OM-D or PEN body. Read the manual for your exact model and follow its tripod setting.

Even with a tripod, keep a shutter speed appropriate for the person. The tripod removes your hand movement; it does not make a moving subject static.

Choose focal length and working distance deliberately

Focal length affects how much of the scene fits in the frame and how far you must stand for the same framing. OM SYSTEM lists both of the following fast lenses for portrait use:

Lens Native focal length 35mm-equivalent view Maximum aperture Portrait use to consider
M.Zuiko Digital 45mm F1.8 45mm 90mm equivalent f/1.8 More working distance and a tighter head-and-shoulders view
M.Zuiko Digital 17mm F1.8 17mm 34mm equivalent f/1.8 Environmental portraits and tighter indoor spaces

When the 45mm F1.8 fits

The 45mm F1.8 provides a 90mm-equivalent angle of view and is the clearer choice when you want a tighter portrait from farther away. The extra distance can make it easier to avoid crowding the subject and leaves more room to isolate a face from the background. It is still important to focus on the eye; the lens’s f/1.8 opening does not compensate for an incorrect target.

When the 17mm F1.8 fits

The 17mm F1.8 provides a 34mm-equivalent view and is listed for portraits as well. It can show the person’s surroundings or fit a portrait into a small room. At close distances, however, a wide lens can exaggerate the relative size of features nearest the camera. Step back when you can and keep the face near the central area of the frame if you want a more natural proportion.

Distance changes the look as much as the lens

Do not compare lenses only by their f-number. Decide whether the portrait should be a tight face, a head-and-shoulders frame, or a person within an environment. Then choose the focal length that gives that framing from a comfortable distance. Changing your camera-to-subject distance changes perspective; changing focal length mainly changes how much of that perspective fits in the frame.

A repeatable portrait workflow

  1. Prepare the scene. Put the most important light on the face, remove distracting high-contrast objects behind the head, and ask the subject to hold still for the first test frame.
  2. Select the lens and framing. Use the 45mm F1.8 for a tighter, more distant portrait or the 17mm F1.8 when the surroundings matter or space is limited.
  3. Set the exposure starting point. Choose f/2.8–f/4 for a forgiving facial depth, or f/1.8 for light and background separation. Set 1/125 second for a still adult or 1/250 second for more movement.
  4. Select focus behavior. Use a small single target and S-AF for a posed subject; use C-AF for changing distance. Enable face/eye detection only after confirming that the camera selects the correct person.
  5. Place and verify focus. Put the target on the near eye, half-press, and look for the AF confirmation mark and green target. If the camera hunts, improve light or contrast on the eye, reduce the target size, or switch to manual focus with supported magnification or peaking.
  6. Make a short burst of deliberate frames. Keep the target on the eye and avoid changing the subject’s distance between frames. For a person moving, reacquire focus whenever tracking visibly leaves the face.
  7. Inspect at playback. Enlarge the eyes. If the eye is sharp but the face is too shallow, stop down. If the whole face shifts during exposure, raise shutter speed. If everything is displaced in the same direction, check your support and stabilization settings.

Troubleshoot the specific kind of softness

The background is sharp but the eye is soft

  • The AF target may have landed on hair, glasses or a background edge. Return to a smaller point on the near eye.
  • Face or eye detection may have selected another person. Watch the active box and switch to single-point AF when necessary.
  • At f/1.8, a slight focus error is magnified by the narrow depth. Try f/2.8–f/4 and refocus.

The entire person is blurred in the direction of movement

  • Increase shutter speed from 1/125 to 1/250 second or faster.
  • Use C-AF if the subject is changing distance, and reacquire when tracking loses the face.
  • Do not expect stabilization to correct subject motion.

The frame is blurred even though the person was still

  • Raise shutter speed if hand movement is visible.
  • Brace your elbows, use a stable stance, or use a tripod.
  • On a tripod, apply the stabilization instruction in your exact model’s manual; the E-M10 Mark III guidance specifically calls for stabilization off.

Autofocus keeps hunting in dim light

  • Add light or move the subject toward an area with clearer contrast around the eye.
  • Use a smaller AF target and avoid placing it over a low-contrast eyelid or shadow.
  • Switch to manual focus and use the body’s supported magnification or focus-peaking tools.

One eye is sharp and the other is not

  • This may be the intended result of f/1.8 and an angled face, not a camera fault.
  • Stop down to f/2.8–f/4, move the face more parallel to the sensor, or focus on the nearer eye and accept the depth difference.

Three useful starting scenarios

Posed indoor head-and-shoulders portrait

Use the 45mm F1.8, S-AF, a single eye target, f/2.8–f/4 and 1/125 second. Raise ISO if the room is dark. Take a test frame, enlarge the eye, then open to f/1.8 only if you need more light or a softer background and can maintain precise focus.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Animated person outdoors

Use C-AF, keep the target on the near eye, begin at 1/250 second or faster, and choose f/2.8–f/4 unless you specifically want the narrow f/1.8 look. If the camera repeatedly jumps to the background, reacquire or use a smaller target.

Environmental portrait in a small room

Use the 17mm F1.8 when you need the surroundings in the frame or cannot step back. Keep the subject away from the extreme edges when possible, watch the distance to the face, and use f/2.8–f/4 if you want more of the scene and face to remain clear.

Check your exact camera manual before relying on a feature

OM-D and PEN bodies do not share identical autofocus menus, target layouts, face/eye controls, stabilization behavior or manual-focus aids. For example, the OM SYSTEM E-M10 Mark IV page lists 121 selectable AF points, face and eye detection options, manual-focus aids and sensor-shift stabilization. Those specifications describe that model and should not be presented as features of every OM-D or PEN camera.

Before a portrait session, confirm the manual’s instructions for selecting AF targets, enabling face or eye detection, assigning touchscreen focus, magnifying manual focus, using focus peaking, and operating stabilization on a tripod. A model-specific menu path is more reliable than a generic instruction because controls change across camera generations.

What the available evidence does—and does not—show

The official product pages establish the focal lengths, equivalent fields of view, maximum apertures and stated portrait uses of the 45mm F1.8 and 17mm F1.8. They do not establish a laboratory ranking proving that either lens is sharper at one aperture than another, nor do they provide an independent autofocus hit rate for portraits. No camera-and-lens combination has been tested here, so the settings in this guide are practical starting points rather than measured performance guarantees.

Sharp portraits come from aligning four choices with the scene: the AF target must be on the eye, the AF mode must match movement, the aperture must provide enough facial depth, and the shutter speed must freeze the person. Once those are correct, lens choice and stabilization can refine the look without masking a focus or motion error.
