To improve uneven skin tone, first identify and address what is causing the discoloration, then protect your skin from further darkening and keep your routine gentle. Dark spots after acne or irritation, melasma, and lighter patches can have different causes and need different care, so there is no single routine that works for everyone.
Start by identifying what kind of discoloration you have
Uneven tone is a visible change, not a diagnosis. In darker skin tones, dark marks often appear after inflammation or injury—such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, a wound, bite, burn, or irritation from a product. Hormonal changes and some medicines can also contribute. Treating an active skin condition and avoiding further irritation can help prevent new marks.

Melasma can cause darker facial patches and may be associated with sunlight, hormonal changes, pregnancy, stress, medical conditions, or certain medicines. Several conditions can look alike, so a dermatologist can help identify the cause when the pattern is unclear or persistent. The American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) explains how melasma is assessed and treated at Melasma: Diagnosis and treatment.
Uneven tone may also mean lighter patches. Those have multiple possible causes, and treatment depends on the diagnosis; avoid trying to lighten or otherwise treat them at home without professional guidance. See the AAD’s advice on treating light spots in brown or black skin.

A simple routine for uneven skin tone
Morning: protect against new darkening
- Cleanse gently, or rinse. Use whichever leaves your skin comfortable. Avoid scrubbing.
- Moisturize if needed. A gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer can support comfort and the skin barrier; it is not itself a pigment-fading treatment.
- Apply sunscreen. Choose a tinted, broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and iron oxides in the ingredient list. Tinted formulas containing iron oxides can help protect against visible light that may worsen darkening, particularly with melasma and in darker skin tones. Choose a shade and texture you will use consistently. Reapply about every two hours while outdoors and after swimming or sweating, following the product label. Shade, a hat, and protective clothing add protection. The AAD explains how to decode a sunscreen label and discusses finding skin cancer in darker skin tones.
Evening: keep care calm and introduce any active slowly
- Cleanse without scrubbing. Remove sunscreen or makeup gently.
- Moisturize as needed. If your skin feels dry or tight, use a fragrance-free moisturizer.
- If you want to try an over-the-counter active, start with one. The AAD lists azelaic acid, glycolic acid, kojic acid, retinoids, and vitamin C as ingredients that may help dark spots. The available guidance does not establish a reliable head-to-head ranking, and suitability depends on the person and cause. Introduce an ingredient cautiously rather than starting several potentially irritating products together. Stop a product that burns or stings.
Choose products carefully—and avoid making irritation worse
When a product causes burning, stinging, redness, or ongoing irritation, stop using it; irritation can trigger or deepen dark marks. Prefer gentle, fragrance-free skin care and avoid repeatedly injuring or irritating the affected area. If acne, eczema, psoriasis, or another active condition is contributing, addressing that condition matters more than adding multiple brightening products.
Retinoids may help some mild pigmentation irregularities, but they can irritate skin, and irritation can itself lead to hyperpigmentation. If you choose one, use it cautiously and build up gradually. The AAD states that retinoids should not be used during pregnancy. Ask a dermatologist if you are pregnant, unsure whether a retinoid is appropriate, or develop significant dryness, redness, or inflammation. Read the AAD’s guidance on retinoids and retinol.

Do not use liquid bleach on skin or rely on unverified skin-lightening products. The AAD reports that some imported skin-care products have contained undeclared steroids or mercury. It advises choosing products made in the United States or recommended by a dermatologist; country of manufacture alone does not guarantee safety. Do not stop a prescribed medicine because you suspect it is affecting your skin—ask the prescriber whether it could be a factor or whether an alternative is appropriate.
How long does it take for dark spots to fade?
The AAD gives a general estimate that a spot only a few shades darker than your natural skin tone may fade in 6 to 12 months after its cause is stopped. Deeper discoloration can take years. This is not a guaranteed result or a trial-derived average, and new irritation or sun exposure can contribute to further darkening. Consistent sun protection and patience matter more than repeatedly switching to harsher products. See the AAD’s guidance on how to fade dark spots in darker skin tones.

When to see a dermatologist
Arrange a professional assessment if you do not know what is causing the change, patches persist despite gentle care and sun protection, irritation continues, prescription treatment may be needed, or the patches are lighter rather than darker. A dermatologist can examine the skin and may use a Wood’s lamp or dermatoscope; a biopsy may be considered in some cases to rule out another condition. An assessment is especially useful for facial discoloration that could be melasma or another condition.
Prescription treatments, including hydroquinone and combination creams, should be discussed with a clinician. In its U.S. guidance, the AAD says hydroquinone is no longer available in products that can be bought without a prescription. Rules and availability may differ by location and change over time.
