To reduce new arrivals, seal gaps around windows, doors, siding, foundations and utility lines, and repair damaged screens.
Choose a removal method
The best approach depends on whether you have one visible bug or several. Avoid squashing it: the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says disturbed or crushed brown marmorated stink bugs release an unpleasant odor from scent glands on their abdomen (EPA guidance).

Remove one bug with a container
Extension guidance recommends brushing or collecting a stink bug into soapy water. A cup or jar and a stiff card can help you do this with little direct contact; this is a practical way to carry out that advice, not a special tested protocol (Oregon State University Extension).
- Approach slowly so you do not startle the bug.
- Hold a cup or jar over it, then slide a stiff card beneath the rim.
- Keep the card against the opening as you lift the container, then tip the bug into soapy water if killing it is acceptable.
Use a vacuum for several bugs
A vacuum can collect bugs quickly, but it may smell afterward. Empty the contents outside promptly, or use a removable collection insert such as a nylon stocking secured over the hose opening so bugs are caught before entering the machine. Follow the vacuum maker’s instructions before using any liquid: guidance describing soapy water in the canister applies to a wet/dry shop vacuum, not an ordinary dry vacuum (Washington State University Extension; EPA guidance).

Set a light-and-water trap for recurring sightings
Place a shallow pan of soapy water beneath a lamp in a dark room. The light can draw stink bugs toward the water, where they are captured and killed. Treat this as a supplemental indoor trap, not a substitute for blocking entry points (Oregon State University Extension; National Pesticide Information Center).
Block new stink bugs from getting inside
Removal handles bugs already indoors; exclusion is the practical prevention step. Inspect likely entry points and close suitable gaps with appropriate materials. North Carolina Cooperative Extension reports that stink bugs can enter through cracks as small as one sixteenth of an inch, so check small openings as well as obvious ones (North Carolina Cooperative Extension).

- Check window and door frames, and repair torn or poorly fitting screens.
- Look for cracks in the foundation, gaps at siding joints, and openings around utility lines.
- Seal suitable openings with exterior caulk or other appropriate materials; use door weatherstripping where a door has a gap.
- Where practical, complete these checks before seasonal entry pressure. Timing varies with region and weather; local Cooperative Extension guidance can help with local timing and identification.
Why indoor sprays are not the main fix
Indoor pesticide use does not keep stink bugs from entering or emerging from hiding places. Washington State University Extension says indoor pesticide use to eradicate them is not recommended, and Iowa State University Extension says indoor spraying and bug bombs do not prevent entry (Washington State University Extension; Iowa State University Extension). Focus on physical removal and exclusion. If you consider a pesticide for another situation, follow its label and seek guidance from your local extension service or pesticide authority.
