Start by removing standing water: it is where mosquitoes can lay eggs and develop, and even small amounts can matter. Then keep mosquitoes out of the house, reduce bites with clothing and an EPA-registered repellent, and use a labeled larvicide only for water you cannot remove.
1. Find and remove standing water
Walk the yard and check around the house for anything that collects rain or irrigation water. Empty, drain, cover, or regularly change water-holding items. EPA guidance recommends changing water in birdbaths, fountains, wading pools, rain barrels, and plant trays at least once a week. See the EPA’s household mosquito-prevention guidance.

- Containers: Check buckets, tires, toys, plant saucers, tarps, plastic covers, and other items left outdoors. Turn them over or store them under cover when practical.
- Drainage: Clear clogged gutters and look for low spots or temporary pools. Drain temporary pools or fill them with dirt where appropriate.
- Water features: Empty and refresh birdbaths, fountains, wading pools, rain barrels, and plant trays weekly. Keep swimming pools treated and circulating.
- Small overlooked spots: Check for water in tree holes and tiny containers. EPA notes that some mosquitoes can use sites as small as a bottle cap; see its general mosquito information.
If water cannot be removed, cover the container where possible so mosquitoes cannot reach it. Recheck after rain and during regular outdoor chores; a single cleanup will not catch water that collects later.

2. Treat water that cannot be emptied
For standing water that must remain, a larvicide may help control mosquito larvae before they become adults. EPA describes Bti products for mosquito control as treatments applied to standing water where larvae are found.
#1 Best Overall
- Controls Mosquito Populations: Prevents larvae from maturing so no biting mosquitoes emerge, keeping your backyard, patio, and garden mosquito free
- Quick and Simple Setup: Just add water to activate and place in a shady area under bushes or trees for safe and hassle free outdoor mosquito prevention
- Breaks Mosquito Life Cycle: Attracts female mosquitoes to lay eggs inside the trap where larvae are eliminated, stopping future generations before they bite
- Family friendly design: Safe around kids and pets with a flat bottom for ground use or a hanging loop for trees, offering flexible placement outdoors
- Effective long term protection: Each mosquito killer trap provides up to 1500 sq ft of coverage, delivering reliable and eco friendly mosquito control for yards, porches, and patios
Use only a product whose label permits the specific water feature and intended use, and follow its directions for application and repeat treatment. A larvicide targets larvae in water; it does not keep adult mosquitoes from entering the yard or protect people from bites. EPA’s guidance on controlling mosquitoes at the larval stage explains this distinct role.
3. Keep mosquitoes outside the house
Repair or maintain window and door screens, and close gaps around doors and windows. EPA includes screens and barriers in its mosquito-bite prevention recommendations. A screen with holes or an unsealed entry gap can undermine these measures, so check them when you inspect the home.

4. Reduce bites when you are outdoors
Wear clothing that covers exposed skin, and choose an EPA-registered insect repellent whose label covers your intended use. Apply it exactly as directed; follow the label for where and how to apply it and when to reapply. EPA’s guide to repellents for protection against mosquito-borne illnesses covers registered products and their use.

- HASSLE-FREE AND EASY TO USE: Quiet and effective mosquito control without flames, sprays, or batteries - just set-up per directions using a refill band and water, replace the band every 30 days, and check water level periodically to refill as needed
- LARGE PROTECTION ZONE: Ortho Home Defense Mosquito Kill & Prevent protects up to 4,300 sq. ft. against mosquitoes and larvae (Aedes and Culex spp)
5. Know when to seek local mosquito-control help
Removing breeding habitat, preventing entry, reducing bites, and controlling larvae address different parts of the problem. EPA describes mosquito control as an integrated approach; complete source removal can be difficult when breeding sites are scattered. See EPA’s explanation of integrated mosquito control.
If mosquitoes remain widespread after you address water sources on your property, ask your local public-health or mosquito-control agency for guidance. Adult-mosquito spraying is a separate intervention and is often handled by public-health programs or professionals, not a substitute for removing breeding sites. EPA’s overview of pesticides used to control adult mosquitoes describes that control context. For any pesticide used at home, follow its label.
