How to Get Rid of Fruit Flies in Drains, Garbage Disposals, and Compost Bins

The reliable way to eliminate flies around a sink is to remove the wet, fermenting material where they reproduce, then trap the adults that remain. Start by identifying the insect, clear food and drink residues throughout the kitchen, test suspect drains overnight, and physically scrub any organic film from the drain, trap, or garbage-disposal splash guard. Traps, hot-water flushing, and properly labeled enzyme products can support that work, but none substitutes for removing the breeding material.

First identify the fly and its breeding site

“Fruit fly” is often used for several small kitchen flies. Treatment depends on which insect you have and where its immature stages are developing.

Common fruit flies

Common fruit flies are tiny tan to brown flies, commonly with red eyes. They gather around ripe or damaged produce, spilled juice, wine or beer, recycling, trash, and damp organic scraps. Females lay eggs on the surface of food or fermenting liquid. The larvae feed for about 5–6 days, and University of Maryland Extension reports a complete egg-to-adult life cycle of 8–10 days under suitable conditions. A single female can lay 100 or more eggs per day, according to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach (2018, reviewed 2025), so a small overlooked spill can produce a continuing cloud of adults.

Drain flies

Drain flies are usually smaller, fuzzy, moth-like insects. Their larvae live in the gelatinous organic slime coating the inside of drains and traps. University of Maryland Extension gives a development range of 7–28 days from egg to adult, depending on conditions. If these are the flies you see, wiping the sink surface or pouring a liquid cleaner down the opening will not remove the established film deep inside the plumbing.

Use a simple overnight source test

  1. Dry the sink and drain opening as much as practical in the evening.
  2. Cover one suspect drain tightly with clear plastic film or a food-storage bag. Do not seal a disposal in a way that could allow it to operate.
  3. Leave the cover in place overnight.
  4. In the morning, check the underside. Adults collected beneath the cover indicate that drain is a likely emergence point.

Test drains one at a time so you can distinguish the kitchen sink from a bathroom, utility-room, floor, or laundry drain. A negative result does not prove the drain is clean; it means you should inspect other sources such as recycling, a compost caddy, a leaking disposal, or a hidden fermenting spill.

Remove breeding material before using any treatment

University of Maryland Extension calls sanitation “the primary control for fruit flies.” Do this whole-kitchen reset before relying on traps or cleaners:

  • Refrigerate ripe produce or discard anything overripe, bruised, leaking, or fermenting.
  • Wipe up juice, soda, wine, beer, syrup, and other sugary or fermented spills, including under appliances and along cabinet edges.
  • Rinse bottles, cans, jars, and other recycling before placing them in the bin.
  • Empty indoor garbage frequently, tie the bag, and wash residue from the can and its lid.
  • Remove food scraps from counters immediately instead of letting them sit in an open bowl.
  • Wash or replace damp sponges, towels, mop heads, and cloths; allow them to dry fully between uses.
  • Clean the sink rim, overflow opening, drain stopper, and the underside of removable strainers.
  • Inspect dark spaces under the refrigerator, dishwasher, and range for a dropped piece of fruit or a sticky spill.

Sanitation has to continue while adults are being trapped. Otherwise, newly emerging flies can replace the adults you remove.

Clean a sink drain mechanically

When a drain test is positive, the central intervention is physical removal of the organic coating. Virginia Cooperative Extension states that thick accumulation requires physical cleaning with a stiff brush and that thorough mechanical cleaning removes the material attracting drain flies.

What to gather

  • A stiff drain brush, narrow bottle brush, or other brush long enough to reach the drain opening and accessible pipe surfaces
  • Gloves, eye protection, and a bucket or bowl for loosened residue
  • Hot tap water for flushing
  • A flashlight to inspect the splash area and flange

Cleaning procedure

  1. Remove standing debris. Take out the stopper, strainer, or removable drain basket. Lift out hair, food particles, and sludge rather than pushing them farther into the pipe.
  2. Scrub the opening. Work the brush around the entire drain throat, underside of the rim, stopper, and strainer. Rotate and move the brush up and down to break the film.
  3. Reach accessible surfaces. If the design permits, brush the short section of pipe below the opening or the trap access point. Do not force a brush where it could become stuck.
  4. Rinse away loosened material. Flush with hot water long enough to carry the loosened residue through the plumbing. Repeat brushing if the interior still feels slimy.
  5. Clean adjacent wet areas. Wipe the overflow channel, drain cover, sink rim, and any removable parts. Dry them after cleaning.

Brushes remove the coating that larvae need; a rinse alone may leave enough film for the infestation to continue. If you cannot access a trap or section of pipe, do not dismantle plumbing that you cannot safely reassemble. A plumber can open and clean an inaccessible section and investigate a suspected sewer or leak problem.

Clean a garbage disposal safely

A disposal is a wet food-processing system. Scraps can lodge beneath the rubber splash guard, around the flange, or in the discharge path and ferment there.

Power-off precautions

  • Switch the disposal off at its wall switch and circuit breaker before putting a hand or brush near the opening.
  • Never reach into the grinding chamber. Use tongs for a visible object that can be removed without contact, or call a professional if an obstruction is not safely accessible.
  • Keep water and cleaners away from electrical connections.

Cleaning steps

  1. With power off, lift or flex each section of the rubber splash guard and wipe its underside. Food often clings where it cannot be seen from above.
  2. Brush the reachable underside of the guard, the disposal flange, and the upper drain throat with a stiff bottle brush.
  3. Remove loosened residue with paper towels or a tool that keeps your hands out of the chamber.
  4. Restore power only after tools and hands are clear, then run a thorough hot-water flush according to the disposal manufacturer’s operating instructions.
  5. If you use an enzyme or foaming product, verify that its label permits use in a garbage disposal and follow the label’s dose and contact time exactly. Never combine it with another cleaner.

Check underneath the sink for moisture, drips, or a musty organic buildup. Virginia Cooperative Extension notes that leaking drains or disposals can attract flies. Repair the leak and clean the affected cabinet floor; otherwise the source can persist even after the disposal is scrubbed.

Manage compost, recycling, and garbage

The National Pesticide Information Center lists compost bins and garbage cans among common fly breeding sites. Treat these containers as part of the same source-removal plan.

Countertop compost caddy

  • Keep the caddy covered with a close-fitting lid.
  • Empty it frequently, before scraps become wet and fermenting.
  • Wash the container with dish detergent, rinse, and dry it completely before replacing the liner.
  • Wipe the counter and cabinet area where drips may have collected.
  • Do not leave food scraps beside the caddy while preparing meals.

Outdoor compost

  • Keep the pile or bin covered while still allowing the ventilation required by its design.
  • Remove visibly spoiled material and bury fresh scraps under a layer of dry carbon material such as leaves or shredded paper, following your local composting program’s rules.
  • Prevent liquid from pooling beneath the bin; move it or improve drainage if the location stays saturated.

Trash and recycling

Rinse containers before recycling, tie and remove garbage regularly, and wash any sticky residue from the can, lid, and floor beneath it. Inspect the recycling bin’s bottom and the space behind it for a forgotten bottle or can with fermented liquid.

Trap adult flies while the source is being removed

Traps reduce flying adults but do not kill eggs and larvae hidden in food residue or drain film. Use one near the suspected source while sanitation and scrubbing continue.

Vinegar-and-soap trap

  1. Pour a small amount of apple cider vinegar into a shallow glass or bowl.
  2. Add one drop of dish soap. The soap breaks the liquid’s surface tension so flies that land on it are less likely to escape.
  3. Cover the container with plastic wrap.
  4. Poke several small entry holes in the wrap.
  5. Set the trap near the sink, disposal, compost caddy, or recycling area, out of reach of children and pets.
  6. Replace the mixture when it becomes full of insects, diluted, or dirty.

A commercial fruit-fly trap is another option if its label identifies the target insect and gives indoor-use directions. Traps are a monitoring and adult-reduction tool, not a cure for a drain or compost infestation.

Will boiling water kill fruit flies in the sink?

Very hot water can flush loosened debris and may kill insects it contacts, but a pour of boiling water does not reliably remove the organic film coating a drain or disposal. It therefore should not be your only treatment. Use hot tap water after brushing to carry loosened material away, and follow the fixture and pipe manufacturer’s guidance if you are considering water near plastic plumbing or a disposal.

Virginia Cooperative Extension does not recommend pouring bleach or vinegar down a drain for drain-fly control. These liquids may kill larvae on the surface without removing the deeper film, and improperly diluted chemicals can damage plumbing. Never pour an insecticide into a drain. Product labels, not a general recipe, determine whether a foaming or enzyme cleaner is appropriate, how much to use, and how long to leave it in place.

Never mix cleaners

In particular, Virginia Cooperative Extension warns: “Under no circumstances should ammonia be used in conjunction with bleach, as the chemical reaction between the two cleaners will release toxic gases.” Keep products in their original containers, ventilate the area, wear the protective equipment on the label, and flush thoroughly only as directed.

A complete one-day workflow

Use this order so you do not spend time treating adults while a source is still producing them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Catch or photograph one fly. Compare its appearance with the fruit-fly and drain-fly descriptions above.
  2. Remove obvious food sources. Refrigerate or discard damaged produce, clean fermented spills, rinse recycling, empty trash, and dry wet cloths and sponges.
  3. Inspect every likely site. Check the disposal splash guard, sink drain and overflow, recycling container, trash can, compost caddy, and spaces under appliances.
  4. Test drains overnight. Cover suspect openings one at a time and check for adults beneath the cover in the morning.
  5. Shut off disposal power. Brush the splash guard, flange, drain throat, and reachable pipe surfaces; remove the loosened residue.
  6. Flush with hot water. If you choose an enzyme or foaming cleaner, use only a label-approved product and never mix cleaners.
  7. Set a trap. Place a vinegar-and-soap or commercial trap near the source to remove adults and show whether activity is declining.
  8. Reset compost and trash. Cover compost, empty it often, clean and dry containers, and remove spoiled material from outdoor compost.
  9. Recheck in several days. If flies continue, test another drain and reinspect for leaks, recycling residue, trash, compost, or a hidden fermenting spill.

How long should elimination take?

Do not stop after the first day that traps look quiet. Common fruit flies can go from egg to adult in 8–10 days, and larvae feed for 5–6 days before pupating. Drain flies may take 7–28 days to complete development. Continue source removal, drying, and trapping through at least one complete expected life cycle; a longer period may be needed where drain conditions support the 28-day range.

Count adults in the same way each day—for example, by checking the trap at the same time—so a genuine decline is distinguishable from a random fluctuation. A brief increase after cleaning can occur when hidden adults emerge; it is a reason to keep removing sources, not to add stronger chemicals.

Troubleshoot flies that keep returning

Flies remain after the sink was scrubbed

Test every nearby drain, including a bathroom, utility, floor, or laundry drain. Inspect the disposal’s splash guard again, then check recycling, garbage, compost, and the cabinet floor beneath the sink. One untreated source can sustain the entire kitchen population.

The drain test is negative but flies are abundant

Focus on fermenting food or liquid outside the plumbing: produce bowls, bottles, cans, a sticky trash-can rim, a compost caddy, or a spill under an appliance. Common fruit flies often breed on the surface of these materials rather than in the drain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Activity returns after cleaning the disposal

Look for a leak at the disposal, trap, or supply connections. Dry the cabinet, repair the leak, and repeat the mechanical cleaning. If moisture or organic buildup is inside an inaccessible connection, arrange plumbing service.

You see fuzzy, moth-like flies

Treat the situation as a drain-fly problem: locate the drain or trap containing slime, scrub it physically, and continue monitoring for up to the 7–28-day development range. Spraying adult flies will not remove larvae in the film.

There is a sewage odor, backup, or inaccessible buildup

Stop experimenting with household chemicals and contact a licensed plumber or pest professional. A leak, blocked trap, sewer defect, or unreachable pipe section requires diagnosis and repair rather than repeated surface treatments.

Covered, frequently emptied compost caddy Access to scraps and moisture that support larvae Prevention and sanitation Suitable for compost containers; clean and dry between uses Empty often and wash whenever residue appears

Prevent another infestation

  • Store ripe fruit in the refrigerator or a sealed container, and check it daily for soft spots.
  • Rinse beverage containers immediately; do not let wine, beer, juice, or soda residue sit in recycling.
  • Keep sink and disposal areas dry between uses, including the underside of the splash guard.
  • Empty countertop compost before scraps become wet or fermented; keep the lid closed.
  • Wash garbage and recycling bins when a bag leaks, then dry them before relining.
  • Hang towels and mop heads to dry rather than leaving them bunched beside the sink.
  • Repair drips under the sink promptly and inspect the cabinet after heavy use of the disposal.
  • Keep traps available for early detection, but respond to a catch by searching for the source instead of relying on traps indefinitely.

When to call for professional help

Get plumbing or pest assistance when a drain remains positive after careful brushing, a leak or sewer odor is present, the suspected breeding material is behind a wall or appliance, or flies persist beyond a complete expected life cycle despite source removal. A professional can open and clean inaccessible piping, correct a trap or drain defect, and distinguish a plumbing problem from an unrelated indoor breeding site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pour insecticide into a drain to kill drain flies?

No. Virginia Cooperative Extension says insecticides should never be poured into drains. Remove the organic film mechanically and use only products whose labels specifically allow the intended application.

How many days should I keep a fruit-fly trap out?

Keep trapping while you remove sources and through at least one expected 8–10-day fruit-fly life cycle; drain-fly problems can require monitoring across their 7–28-day development range.

Is a covered compost bin enough to stop flies?

A lid helps, but emptying the caddy frequently, cleaning and drying it, and removing spoiled outdoor compost are also necessary because moisture and residue can support larvae.
